The Decalogue - IX (Polish: Dekalog, dziewięć) is a ninth part of the television series The Decalogue by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski, connected to the ninth imperative of the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.

A man who has become impotent (Piotr Machalica) discovers that his wife (Ewa Błaszczyk) has a lover. (A minor character in this film, a young singer with a heart condition, inspired Kieślowski's and Piesiewicz's next film, The Double Life of Véronique.) [1]

Synopsis[edit]

Roman (Piotr Machalica) finds out, that he has a sexual dysfunction - he is impotent. His friend, doctor confirms this to him, suggesting that he should divorce to his beautiful young wife, Hanka Ewa Błaszczyk. They love each other too much and simply cannot do it. Hanka says to Roman that there are more important things in a relation between two people than sex and that she will manage living without it. They live like this for some time, but after that, Roman encourages Hanka to find a lover. She does it in the end and finds a younger boyfriend, Mariusz (Jan Jankowski), for purely physical relation. However, Roman starts to creep around, bugging the phone and making duplicate keys. He has problems in his job and with the people around him and the only thing he can concentrate on is to spy on what his wife is doing. In the mean time, Hanka tries to end-up the relation with Mariusz. He says that he loves her and wants to marry her. She sends him away from the flat. The problem is, that Roman is in the flat also ans spies on them. Hanka discovers him and is very unpleasantly surprised. He starts shouting on him. Roman tries to commit a suicide, but survives. Hanka ends all relations with Mariusz and comes back to Roman's side.
