User pages

If you've stumbled here, welcome.

This is where I store my ideas re urging newish (red) users, if they look like genuinely good users, to 'go blue'.

Fell free to copy my ideas of course.

Oh - and do let me know your thoughts on any of the options ... what do you like, what could be improved, which method seems best?

Please add such thoughts here, before "Method 1".

Method 1

Me again. I have this compulsion to share ideas, so please humour me. :) Do forgive me if you already knew all this ...

A lot of people choose - as they're entirely entitled to - to leave their own user page empty, with the result that their account name & signature stays in red on history pages etc. (as in here). You'll know that your own user page is empty & in red for now - User:AnyRedUser. That's perfectly fine.

Others prefer to use their user page to show the articles they've created, or helped edit, or maybe the projects they're working on, ideas for the future, tips they've picked up & want in one place for reference /passing on, etc. etc. - you name it - basically just about anything they fancy having there.

So their user names & signature appear in blue, & other editors can see what their niche /forte is, for instance User:Agadant - we can see he/she does a lot on music albums etc. & their name's blue on the history pages of the articles they've edited again, here.

So, we can choose relative anonymity (red) or sharing ideas (blue).

There's no correct way - it's entirely personal choice.

But it did occur to me that it's interesting to see what articles interest people, & in your case, I wondered if you'd considered putting the following onto User:AnyRedUser:

Sawbuck is a small but important band. It's related to the formation of the bands Montrose and the Edgar Winter Group. It's also vital the the histories of Ronnie Montrose, Mojo Collins, Chuck Ruff and Bill Church and Van Morrison's album Tupelo Honey.

Obviously, you could then edit / expand your user page just as & when you (& only you) saw fit.

Ah well, just a thought. Thank you for reading (if you got this far!). And just to reiterate, you don't need to do anything - it's completely a matter for you alone to choose or not, as you prefer - and there is no deadline either!

Method 2

Oh - just a thought, which you may care to ponder on: IMHO, when doing vandal-patrol (& I now know you're not one!), I check the History like this of pages on my Watchlist. I look for missing ES as a sign to check an edit. I treat registered users such as your good self with less concern than an IP user. But then, I treat established users (in blue, like User:Jwy) as more trustworthy than 'new' ones (in red, such as [at the moment] is User:Dellant). So, if you put something on the latter page, you'd be blue, not red. For instance, some editors say what their interests are - e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cutlery (for which it's a shame there's no Userbox like Template:User WikiProject Go ... ). (See my user page if you're bored or interested!)

Going 'blue' may work to your advantage with users like me, prejudiced by experience if you like. Up to you, of course - just thought you may like to know. Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 11:13, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Method 3

Nice work

Hiya. Noticed some of your contributions & thought they were cool.

Just a couple of thoughts to share ...

Firstly, when making edits, you may not know, but we're supposed to supply a ES with each edit.

Secondly, as you're making good progress, how about putting something on your User page? Not obligatory at all, but there are benefits to you and other editors. You see, at the moment, you appear in red in all places, for instance in Edit Histories such as this one.

That means we fear you're a red menace, whereas your edits are in fact sound.

Whereas, if you put anything at all on your user page, your name would henceforth be blue. You could put anything at all - how about "I'm interested in social justice".?

Best thing then is ... it keeps us well-wishers off your back!
