December 18, 2020 I am here to root out scam references. These happen when someone is running a scam in which they want to claim something that may not be true. In order to make their statement look worthy they create a link to an incorrect or missing reference. Sometimes the original reference was correct, but the page was moved and now the reference leads to something unrelated or a black page. Sometimes the reference even leads to a page containing a virus. All of these bad references need to be checked and removed as soon as possible. If there is no archived reference and it is not possible to prove the URL was once there, this reference needs to be completely removed with a note left to explain why it was removed.

This user wants YOU to properly cite your sources!

Teach a man to fish and he eats for life. Have your ever read an article and when want to find it, it is has been deleted or gone behind a paywall? That is what Archive Today can help with. Every time I read an article I spend a few seconds to save that article in Archive Today. It really paid off. Now I find the articles I want to find again as long as I know the URL. You have to keep track of the URL, so start a document on your topic and copy paste the URLs into your document which you should save on a cloud server. If you lose the URL you will never find that link again! So keep a document with the url saved on your computer. There is no way to search by topic on Archive Today.

Goals for this account: 1 Improve Wikipedia by adding references that are web based citations instead of book citations that are often directed to expensive and/or out of print book which no one will bother to look at to verify potentially misleading claims. 2. Backing up all web based references at Archive Today in case those web pages are later removed from the Internet. Online web citations are not necessarily more believable than ones published it books, but it is not possible to debate inaccuracies when the information is not available to the average Wikipedia user.

Guide to adding a web based reference to Wikipedia:

After spends weeks working on the issue of references being stuck in in the middle of the page rather than going down the bottom of the page. I have worked out a system of steps, and I am posting them in hope of helping other people add references. Always check the references to be sure you are not being scammed.

If a reference on the web does not exist any longer place, the dead link tag, and be sure to link to the saved backed up reference in Archive Today .

This is an example of how you would add a dead link tag

Instead of just deleting the reference, so people can look for an archived copy of the reference unless the reference now leads to illegal and harmful websites which can try to install a virus into the computer that goes to the webpage. Since many websites that are deleted are bought by harmful entities that upload virus and malware, always use Archive Today as a first line as it removes any harmful code that may attack your system upon visiting an unsafe website.

To add a website reference use the template in source editor:

The template wizard that you can use to create a reference if you don’t know how to code. It is one of the icons that appears on a menu that you mouse over and read to find out which one.

Once it is all filled The date needs to looks like day month year example 25 March 2019 Give the article a title (even if it does not have one) because if you don’t you will have to start all over again because they are hard to edit or else they can’t be edited. Keep your typing in a document to save retyping it again and again if the process fails the first few times. You may have to do some tweaking and adjusting.

This entire code is then copy and pasted in between the reference tags.

[1] sample code

Insert a reference is added at the point in the article in which you want the footnote to appear. Place your cursor at the exact spot in the article you want your Reference to appear as a number, you will not know which number the reference will be given until you click save.

Such as in the Elvis article: Elvis gained a lot of weight.(here is where the reference goes but it will appear at the end of the page with the other references)[2] (place cursor in between open [3] when you click the reference icon) So it looks like this "Elvis gained a lot of weight" (1) clicking on the number one will cause the viewer to be taken to the reference section of the article to view the reference.

I have encountered situation on Wikipedia in which I am not able to save the complete information for the reference due to red marked errors. If you notice just above what is marked it red on my example shown below. These errors can happen if the date is in the wrong format, but occasionally these errors occur due to some other unknown script error or bug. If you have this issue I suggest just saving the title of the webpage i.e. "Elvis Got Fat" along with the URL. The archived page can be accessed by users who know how to find a saved page by going to Archive Today and entering the current URL into the past saved box which is located directly under the save this URL box.

More information about Archive Today: Archive Today has many different URL prefixes that change often. Therefore the correct way is to substitute them with the word today. Unfortunately a Bot called the Green C Bot has been created to suck up those references and change them into Wayback Machine References rather than repair them. Wayback Machine does not have very many current references and Wayback Machine takes too long to load because it does not save the references as static hyperlink free image which is safe to view. Furthermore the Wayback Machine allows website owners to remove saved references creating a fictional history of the Internet. Before you post a reference using Archive Today change the vn is fo into the word today. Example https://archive.vn/XcYEB becomes https://archive.today/XcYEB Ty78ejui (talk) 18:26, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
