Group 10C Article Editing and Section Drafting[edit]

Sections to Edit[edit]

Lead Section[edit]

Sustainable capitalism is a form of capitalism based on sustainable practices which seek to preserve humanity, preserve the planet, reduce externalities and a capitalist form of economic policy. A capitalistic economy must expand to survive and find new markets to support this expansion[1]. Sustainability implies a not only a continuation, but a replenishing of resources[2]. Sustainability is often thought of to be related to environmentalism, but the concept of sustainable capitalism would have to apply sustainable principles to economic and social aspects of capitalism.

The importance of sustainable capitalism has been more recently recognized although the concept is not new.

This concept follows recent trends that see forms of sustainable business as the preferred method for development, because of the way that these types of businesses offer a positive influence to their environment.

New Sections[edit]

Group 10C Ideas for Improvement and Individual Contributions[edit]

What is Missing?[edit]

  • A clear definition of what sustainable capitalism is.
  • Clear lead section
  • Opposing opinions
  • Recent ideas
  • Varying procedural ideas/concepts
  • Different proposed forms

Notes for Improvement[edit]

  • Intro contains direct quotes which need to be removed
  • The article needs more sources (have some to choose from).
  • Fix the section titles to Wikipedia style, many are long
  • expand more about the concept of entropy
  • Remove direct quotes from Criticism and other sections

What we Plan to Add[edit]

Ty Sauer[edit]

We are most interested in recent ideas of a sustainable capitalism due to the recent pressures for climate change in the political realm. New markets for sustainability in infrastructure, energy, and other eco-friendly commodities are some of these recent phenomenons.

I have contributed toward the social aspects section of the page, which are social critiques or expectation of sustainable capitalism.

Trace Marsing[edit]

Cop editing.

I added a section to the talk page discussing my plans to scrap and rewrite the section citing John Ikerd.

Bailey Wilson[edit]

Savannah Dameff[edit]

When editing the Wikipedia article titled: "Sustainable Capitalism" I would like to add specific environmental aspects of sustainable capitalism such as regulations and state infrastructures related to capitalism based issues.

Katie Pennant[edit]

I will go through the excess quotations and removes/summarize as needed.

Nea Hamilton[edit]

I plan to expand the definition of sustainable capitalism overall. Currently it is described as an idea limited to that of Al Gore and David Blood when really the concept is much greater than that. I think this limits the bounds of the concept and makes it seem too small. I plan to add more recent sources as to what sustainable capitalism could look like and how people could potentially work towards it. I plan to add different ideas that scholars have had about trying to morph capitalism to sustainable capitalism. During these additions, I'll make sure to keep to the rules of Wikipedia like remaining impartial.

I've linked to our article from the capitalism page, sustainability page and the anti-capitalism page.

Group 10C Potential Articles and Sources[edit]

Potential Articles[edit]

Neo-capitalism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-Capitalism

This is an important page as the term comes up quite often but isn't always well explained. This page is listed as having multiple issues, mostly that it relies upon a single source and is more opinion that fact. We would add more sources to diversify a bit and focus on fact rather than opinion. Although there seems to be a good amount of information it is not really cited. It seems more of an essay than an Wikipedia article. The only source is from more than 40 years ago, so an update would be in order.

Two-stage Theory of Capitalism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-stage_theory

There is not much information on the actual theory. Expanding on the theory and its origins would bring a better understanding to topic as a whole. There is a lot of information about the criticism, but that leaves the article pretty one-sided. Could consider adding a section about information from scholars support of the theory as a balance to counter the criticism to make it more well-rounded. Perhaps some information could be added about the predictions made in the reference articles versus the years of history that have happened since then.

Sustainable Capitalism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_capitalism#Marx.27s_pessimistic_view_on_capitalism_proper

Sustainable capitalism is important as we currently have a capitalist system of geovernment, but we need to have sustainable procedure if we don't want the earth to be destroyed. There could be more added to the foundations and procedures section. This system puts environmental reductionism first by creating and investing markets for environmental commodities, such as eco-friendly cars, infrastructure, alternative fuel and energy, etc. This is related to the course material as much of the course points out the flaws of capitalism today, and suggests alternate forms of economic systems or governance that benefit mankind.

Soviet Republic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_republic_(system_of_government)

This article is dramatically under-sourced. More information about the actual structure and specifics of the constitution of the soviet republic could be included. Further history or deeper explanations of the examples section could be added. We could research the development of the idea, and it's relationships with other models of post-capitalist organization, especially those it influenced and any that may have influenced it. In particular, the Soviet model should be contrasted with council communism, libertarian socialism, and other forms of worker governance. Additionally, it may be appropriate to discuss the disagreements within the Soviet system about what it should've looked like.
