Photonics4Life[edit]

Photonics4Life is a Network of Excellence, funded by the European Union within the 7th Framework Programme for research and technological development. It consists of 13 European research institutes working in the field of Biophotonics. The network’s aim is to provide a coherent framework for research in this strongly fragmented field in Europe[1]. Biophotonics is a multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine. One of the tasks of Photonics4Life is to map and to overview the research and technological developments across these various subdisciplines with their manifold interdependences.

PHOTONICS4LIFE targets to bridge the gaps between the different research communities ranging from Physics and Engineering via Chemistry and Physical Chemistry to Biology and Medicine and thereby to improve and extend the analysis of cell processes, non- and minimally-invasive diagnosis and therapy and point-of-care diagnostics. Furthermore PHOTONICS4LIFE aims to link the expertise of research institutes towards SMEs and large companies in order to foster Biophotonics research and to strengthen the economical competitiveness of Europe in the global Biophotonics market.
