Bats

Bats are mammals, and what sets them apart from other mammals is that they can fly. There are between 900 and 1200 bat species. That is one fifth of the mammal population.[1] "Bats can be found almost anywhere in the world except the polar regions and extreme deserts"[2]. Bats can live up to 20 years old.[3] Bats communicate using echolocation. They also use echolocation to locate their food.[3]

Size

Bats come in all sizes. They can be very small and then they can be quite big. There are microbats and megabats. The biggest bats can have wingspans up to 6 feet. and weight up to 2.2 pounds. The smallest bats can be as small as 1.25 inches. and weigh 2 grams.[1]

Diet

Most bats eat insects, but there are some bats that eat fruit, nectar, or small animals.[2]

Location

Bats seem to be able to live in almost all conditions. They are found in almost every place in the world.[3] Bats live in caves, holes in trees, and buildings among other places.[2]
