The purpose of this page is to have a rough idea of if a character in the Final Fantasy series is notable enough to warrant an encyclopedic article. When drafting such an article, it may be useful to consult this table to see how your draft compares to these metrics.

In short, a character in the Final Fantasy series is likely to warrant an encyclopedic article if all of the following criteria can be met:

  1. Several dozen sources total,
  2. More than a dozen unique and reliable outlets providing commentary or analysis, preferably not just in passing, and
  3. Thousands of bytes or half a thousand words dedicated to articulating how the character is received by commentators, as that's the section that matters the most with regards to demonstrating notability.
  4. At least a few sources that one could point to as the best sources for establishing notability. These sources should offer in-depth coverage, critique, analysis, or commentary. Having reliable sources primarily or exclusively about the character helps, but is not required. Sources that convey to the reader that the character is in some way significant beyond the media they appear in help, too.

Once these criteria are met, ensure that all content in the article can be sourced, trim out any excesses, and submit for reviewing!

Table[edit]

Stats for Wikipedia articles about fictional characters in the Final Fantasy franchise
Article # of total sources in References section # of unique and independent outlets cited [a] Size of Reception section (Character count / Word count) Significant coverage
Below typical demonstration of notability — may fail to meet WP:GNG!
Freya Crescent[b] 19 ~13 2,243 / 352 The final revision before the page was merged shows that the article lacked sources that could meet WP:SIGCOV.
Beatrix (Final Fantasy) 13 ~11 1,838 / 297 The final revision before the page was merged shows that the article lacked sources that could meet WP:SIGCOV.
Vincent Valentine 42 ~14 2,775 / 438 I was not able to locate any sources that are specifically about the character in the Reception section. There is some commentary, but it largely consists of countdown lists offering superficial comments, not in-depth critique.
Faris Scherwiz 21 ~17 1,692 / 264 This article does not seem to contain sources that are primarily about the character, though it may still be considered WP:SIGCOV as the sources articulate that the character offered a meaningful departure from the expectations of female characters in video games.
Rydia 14 ~9 1,836 / 312
  1. Game informer: This source, whose outlet is listed at WP:VG/S as reliable, straightforwardly establishes that the character was impactful and matters beyond the media she appears in by dedicating an article exclusively to a fan work based on the character.
  2. Destructoid: It's not considered a great quality source at WP:VG/S, but this page offers lengthy commentary and critique about the character and is primarily about her.
Near normal demonstration of notability — likely fine to remain as standalone articles.
Kefka Palazzo 47 ~17 2,635 / 430 While articles primarily focused on the character are few and far between, there is an excessive number of sources cited that refer to the character as one of the greatest of all time, either in the genre, series, or in video games more broadly.

It also helps that there is at least the following article focusing on the character alone:

  1. Kotaku [1] - Article dedicated to the character
Terra Branford 41 ~18 2,325 / 366
  1. Hutchinson, Rachael (2019). Japanese Culture Through Videogames. Routledge. ISBN 978-0367111380.
  2. Maugein, Pierre (2018). The Legend of Final Fantasy VI. Third Editions. pp. 70–71. ISBN 9782377840472.
  3. Kill Screen [2] - This article, authored by an academic, offers extraordinarily in-depth commentary on the characters Terra and Celes
Barret Wallace 35 ~17 4,203 / 662[c]
  1. RPGamer [3][4] - Articles (though from the same outlet) dedicated to the character
  2. Kotaku [5] - Fairly in-depth commentary focused on two characters, one of which is the subject
  3. Holleman, Patrick (2018). "Introduction". Reverse Design: Final Fantasy VII. CRC Press. ISBN 978-0-429-83452-3.
Celes Chere 31 ~24 3,639 / 583
  1. Kotaku [6] - This article is about the lasting significance of a scene that focused primarily on Celes.
  2. Holleman, Patrick (2018). Reverse Design: Final Fantasy VI. CRC Press. ISBN 97804-2-983-443-1.
  3. Maugein, Pierre (2018). The Legend of Final Fantasy VI. Third Editions. pp. 76–77. ISBN 9782377840472.
  4. Kill Screen [7] - shared with the Terra article
Shadow (Final Fantasy) 26 ~16 3,290 / 503 A large number of sources, while not primarily about the character, highlight the character as a standout example of an assassin or ninja character in video games.

The following sources offer significant coverage of the character on their own:

  1. AV Club [8] - Primarily about the character
  2. Deken, Sebastian (2021). Final Fantasy VI. Boss Fight Books. p. 53-55. ISBN 97819-4-053-528-9. - Offers meaningful commentary
  3. Holleman, Patrick (2018). Reverse Design: Final Fantasy VI. CRC Press. ISBN 97804-2-983-443-1.

No need to include Destructoid in this list as there are much stronger sources.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ This is a (likely inaccurate) guesstimate determined by skimming the references section and counting each outlet once (as citing the same source in multiple places does not demonstrate further notability), discounting any sources that would obviously not demonstrate notability such as material published by the game's creators.
  2. ^ Strike-through text indicates that a page is no longer a standalone article as it failed to meet the general notability guidelines.
  3. ^ 2,017 / 322 excluding subsections
  4. ^ 3,419 / 530 excluding subsections
  5. ^ 3,859 / 577 excluding subsections
  6. ^ This means I was too lazy to guesstimate
