My Mid-Term Quiz for LIBY 1210-09 Winter 2016

My Research Topic is: Dance in Hinduism

Key words related to my Research Topic are: Dance & Hinduism

Part 1:

Examine Wikipedia articles that are directly related to your Research Topic and select a substantive article to evaluate. This could be an article about an idea (e.g., I might choose the one about Trance) or a person (if I were researching Reggae music, I might pick Bob Marley). Answer the following questions:

I chose to read and evaluate the article titled: Seungmu (for extra credit, link the name of the article to the article in Wikipedia.)

1. Is there a warning banner at the top of the article? No

If there is a warning banner, copy and paste the warning banner here.

Write an brief explanation of the reason the issues mentioned in the warning banner are important. For example, if the issue is “needs additional citations for verification,” why does that matter?

Please note: If the article you are evaluating does not have a warning banner, choose a warning banner from a different article and explain the warning that is in that banner.

This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (May 2016) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)

This warning banner is important because it lets you know that their isn't enough citations in this article. The citations are needed in order to make the information credible and make sure it's not biased/ incorrect information. Without citations the information you use can be plagiarism since no credit is being given to the source where the information was originally from.

2. Is the lead section of the article easy to understand? Does it summarize the key points of the article? The lead section is clear to understand and explains the different types of dances in India.

3. Is the structure of the article clear? “Are there several headings and subheadings, images and diagrams at appropriate places, and appendices and footnotes at the end?” The article has clear headings and subheadings along with pics on the side of the article. Throughout the article there are footnotes in each subheadings.

4. Are “the various aspects of the topic balanced well”? That is does it seem to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic? It definitely provides a wide range of information about dance in India as a whole, but it also describes the different forms of dances.

5. Does the article provide a “neutral point of view”? Does it read like an encyclopedia article instead of a persuasive essay? This article strictly goes straight to the point and explains the facts instead of trying to persuade you in any way.

6. Are the references and footnotes citing reliable sources? Do they point to scholarly and trustworthy information? Beware of references to blogs; look for references to books, scholarly journal articles, government sources, etc. The references are scholarly information as they aren't any blog posts, but scholarly books like oxford and encyclopedias.

7. Look for these signs of bad quality and comment on their presence or absence from the article you are evaluating:

a. is the lead section well-written, in clear, correct English? It is well written and uses Indian English grammar.

b. are there “unsourced opinions” and/or “value statements which are not neutral”? This article stays very neutral and simply explains the factual evidence without any opinions.

c. does the article refer “to ‘some,’ ‘many,’ or other unnamed groups of people,” instead of specific organizations or authors or facts? This article refers to the facts and the specifics of who would perform the dances, when it would be performed and why it is performed.

d. does the article seem to omit aspects of the topic? I don't believe they excluded anything as it does describe the different type of Indian dances.

e. are some sections overly long compared to other sections of similar importance to the topic? All of the sections are primary the same length.

f. does the article lack sufficient references or footnotes? For the amount of facts and evidence in this article, there is definitely a substantial about of references and footnotes throughout.

g. Look at the “View History” for the article. As you read the conversation there, do you see hostile dialogue or other evidence of lack of respectful treatment among the editors? The history revision dialogue seems to be of scholarly respect for one another as corrections have been made.

Part 2:

Evaluate the Wikipedia article you selected using the CARDIO method. Write your answers following each word below:

Currency (When was the last update of this article? hint: check the View History) October 13, 2016

Authority (What evidence do you find that the author(s) of this article have the appropriate credentials to write on this topic?) The authors who wrote this article used references from scholarly books and sources form universities like Cornell and New York. This article is also apart of WikiProjectIndia which is editors that want imrove any article related to Indian topics.

Relevance (to your research topic) Since my topic is on dance in religion, India alone has many different types of dances that is apart of their religion.

Depth I think the article provides the basic general information for the general audience, it describes each type of dance to inform the audience. But if you were looking to research on one particular type of dance you would have to further research another article that goes more in depth with that specific dance type.

Information Format (I hope this one will be easy for you.) I think this article is for the general public as it lacks the depth of what a scholarly article would have and the vocabulary is easily to understand. The article provides a wide range of information like the different types of dances, but it only gives a brief description of each.

Object (what is the purpose for creating this article?) The article was written to inform those who wanted to know the different forms of dances in India.
