Brinkworth railway station was located in the town of Brinkworth, South Australia. It was located on the Hamley Bridge-Gladstone railway line and was a junction for the Kadina-Brinkworth railway line.

History

[edit]

Opening

[edit]

Two railway lines from the towns of Blyth and Snowtown were agreed to reach the township of Brinkworth in 1892 and soon opened in 1894. The second class timber station building was constructed at Brinkworth containing waiting rooms, luggage rooms and porter's rooms, residences for the station master, porters and foreman[1]. The railway lines were originally constructed as 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge but were converted to 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) broad gauge on 1 August 1927[2]. The station was eventually described as the Great Junction of the Blyth, Snowtown and Gladstone Railways [3].

Closure and demolition

[edit]

In 1978, the station and all associated infrastructure was included in the transfer of South Australian Railways to Australian National. The line from Blyth through to Gladstone was closed on 29 March 1989 followed by the remaining line to Snowtown on 20 February 1990. The station building was demolished in November 1996, being badly affected by white ants [4].
