Relations between South Vietnam and the United States were one of the closest the United States had during the Cold War and the Vietnam War. South Vietnam relied heavily on the United States for military support to counteract North Vietnam, its main enemy during the war. While relations were close due to mutual hostility toward Communism and the Soviet Union, a major ally of the North Vietnamese, internal events in South Vietnam made things often complex and provided more headaches for the U.S.' ability to win the Vietnam War. Relations between South Vietnam and the United States collapsed with the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, with the North Vietnamese securing victory and the region of South Vietnam being absorbed into reunified Vietnam under a Communist State.
