A Freeness Tester measures the drainage rate of a diluted paper pulp suspension, providing a measurable index of the refining degree of pulps. Tracking this measurement is a routine operation during beating and refining.

The surface conditions and swelling of the fibers in the pulp are measured indirectly, as they affect the drainage rate.

The Pneumatic Canadian Standard Freeness Tester (CF-21) is a widely used tool designed to give a measure of the drainability of a pulp suspension in water. The measured values are reported as Freeness of Pulp, Canadian Standard Method.
