Adam T. Smith: The tree and tower motif is known from an array of Urartian materials, including a clutch of bronze bowls discovered at the site of Karmir-Blur, which, like Erebuni, is located within the territory of modern Yerevan. The tower and tree appears on the Karmir-Blur bowls as a hieroglyph incised on the interior, often alongside an inscription that claims the objects as prop- erty of the king (fig. 50 inset). We see this same tower and tree motif re- peated in what is perhaps the most peculiar of the Soviet National rede- ployments of a recuperated archaeological repertoire: a monument erected in 1970 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Soviet Armenia (fig. 50). Set into a steep rock outcrop at the northern apex of the city's circular central precinct, a cascading stairway ascends to an elevated platform on which stands a 50-meter-high stone obelisk. Surmounting the obelisk is a sculpture depicting the same fortified tower with a stylized tree rising from its crenellated battlements.[1]
