After 140 years of business, Scottish football club Rangers go into liquidation.

Women's suffrage[edit]

Although Asquith's government was socially progressive, when it came to women's suffrage Asquith had been a strong opponent since the 1880s.[1] Despite a long and sometimes violent campaign of civil disobedience Asquith refused to extend the franchise to women. Asquith's carriage had been attacked by Mary Leigh in Dublin in 1912, Irish nationalist leader John Redmond was injured in that attack.[2] Papers released in 2006 indicated the government's fears of an assassination attempt on Asquith.[1] It was only after his premiership in 1917 that he came around to some limited extension of women's rights.[3]

The 1878–79 Scottish Cup was the sixth season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. The final was contested by Vale of Leven and, Glasgow club Rangers, the match finished in a 1–1 draw. The replay was due to take place the following week but Rangers declined to play the replay saying that they had scored a second goal in the final. The SFA decided against Rangers and awarded the cup to Vale of Leven.[4]
