Stephen A. Sheller (born October 18, 1938) is an American trial lawyer best known for challenging the "butterfly ballots" on behalf of Palm Beach, Florida voters in the 2000 U.S. presidential election. Along with XX and YY Sheller wrote the complaint that enjoined the XX, resulting in a recount.


the first legal boots on the ground in what would turn into the Bush v. Gore litigation controversy of the 2000 presidential election;  the first to blunt the tobacco industry with multi-billion dollar verdicts and settlements due to his unique legal theories focusing on fraud, not personal injury; responsible for Ringwood Mines/Landfill, the Ford Motor Company’s industrial dump site becoming the first site to be added back to the National Priorities List; and his use of the little-known/utilized False Claims Act (or ‘Lincoln Law,’ stemming back to the civil war) to bring pharmaceutical companies to heel— with settlements and fines in the billions. As of 2021, nearly half of the top 10 Pharma False Claims settlements are attached to his name.


Early Life

Sheller was born in Brooklyn, New York to Max and Mary (nee Alexander) Sheller.

In 1948 the family moved to Flatbush


He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1956.


Career

In 1977 he launched the predecessor firm of what would become Sheller, P.C. Law Firm, a plaintiff’s personal injury, class action and whistleblower/qui tam boutique law firm based in Philadelphia.

Personal Life

On May 1962 he married Estelle "Stelle" Ludwig (1940- Nov. 17, 2018) They had two daughters, Jaime and Mimi Sheller. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1981 he married Sandy Mitnik. The couple has two daughters: Danielle and Lauren A. Sheller



Philanthropy

Sheller is active in philanthropic causes. In 2013 (CKCK) he and his wife Sandy established the Sheller Family Foundation, focused on serving Philadelphia's underserved populations. Its initiatives include a family health services center and the Stephen and Sandra Sheller Center for Social Justice at Temple University's Beasley School of Law. In 2017, Sheller received honorary doctorates from Drexel University in 2017 and from Temple Law in 2019 for his service and work.
