Captain Ummed Singh Rathore (IC-50910K) Captain Ummed Singh Rathore was born on 22nd January 1968 to Mr. Bhanwar Singh Rathore and Mrs. Suwa Kanwar. He started his education in Sainik School at chittorgarh . He was inspired by his father to join the army to serve for the nation. In 1990 he passed out from National defense Academy (NDA) and he was the best cedet during his NDA training.

Later, he joined the 86th course in Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. There he learnt horse riding. After completing his training in IMA , he was commissioned to the 21 Sikh Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant on 22nd July 1992.

In 1994, his unit was ordered to move draws, Kargil , Jammu and Kashmir but before this a good news for him as he was promoted to lieutenant. He got chance to give guard of honour to Maharaja of Nepal who came to india for first time. It make him so proud . The young Lieutenant was then joined his unit, but after few days his unit was ordered to counter the terrorist and their he fought bravely and with help of his colleagues he managed to kill 2 terrorist. In this operation one of his unit officer got injured, young officer Lieutenant ummed even not thinking of his life for a second saved injured officer.He was awarded sena medal for his valour and courage. Time passed and he was promoted as Captain in 1994 and got married in same year.

It is the drass, 2nd coldest battlefield in the world, the enemy is not so much entity holding rifles and guns, it is nature, isolation, your mind and your body.Temperature In the region below 0° during winters , and here the young officer serve the nation.

In the night of 7th December, actually 1:00 am (8 Dec 1994) he had a short conversation with his Commanding Officer ” Ok chalta hu sir, Jai mata di” and then he moved to Drass from his base camp in night with four soldiers. He was sporting his favourite golden watch. When he was on his way to Drass suddenly an avalanche hit the high altitude post which is situated at 19000 feet in Drass, kargil. He and four soldiers were trapped and got buried under 30 feet of snow. All the brave sons of India remained burried in snow and could not be founded till May 1995. It was really tough tough months for the families and finally all the bodies were recovered after snow melted in summer. “The watch” was still running seems to be saying that I am always here to protect you . The news was a great shock for the family members who were excited because of news that Captain Ummed was soon to be promoted to Major ,however that day never came.The dream of the family was shattered ,perhaps this is the cost we have to pay for our freedom.
