Welcome to my User Page[edit]

  • Interviewer: Hi, welcome to the Wikipedia Universe. Would you like to present yourself?
  • Interviewee: Hey, I'm studying English and French at the University of Freiburg.
  • Ir: Oh, nice... Isn't Freiburg located in this beautiful region called Schwa...Schwaazwald?
  • Ie: Yes, you're right. By the way, you can look up the pronunciation here on this page: Black Forest It's 'Schwarzwald'.
  • Ir: Oh thank you! So I see you're already a bit familiar with this platform, or at least with the structure of articles... So. I'd now like to know what brought you here. Is there an interesting story behind it?
  • Ie: Well, this winter term I'm taking a course called "Translating Wikipedia" (User:OberMegaTrans/WS2015), so this platform will be our tool, our 'work place' and the platform where the entire course will communicate with each other.
  • Ir: This sounds very good! And what's the aim of the course?
  • Ie: We'll be translating some German Wikipedia articles into English, so more English speaking people will have the chance to read articles that deal with typical German topics (i.e. German culture / Germany).

Translations[edit]

1. Konzerthaus Freiburg (User:OberMegaTrans/WS2015-Konzerthaus)[edit]

(Homework - 5 November 2015)

  • 154 words; 40 minutes for first paragraph, 15 minutes for second paragraph
  • problems while translating:
 (1st paragraph)
 - "Oberbürgermeister" – 'Lord Mayor' (British equivalent) or 'mayor'?
 - "finanzielle Unterstützung des Landes" – "für das Land" or "vom Land"?
 - "in Anlehnung an die zuvor angeregte Bahnhofsplatte" - not quite clear whether it refers to a previously suggested study or an
alternative place to conduct the present study
 - "Bahnhofsplatte" - I can't even imagine what that looks like...
 (2nd paragraph)
 - "soll bestückt werden" - Don't we all love translating this word "sollen"?

2. Grünanlagen Freiburg (Grünanlagen Freiburg work page)[edit]

(Homework - 3 December 2015)

  • 290 words; 130 minutes
  • problems while translating:
 (Moosweiher Park)
 - German: "A5" - I translated it with "A5 (federal highway)", but I'm not quite sure if this is the best version.
 - German: "Gemeinderat" - I came up with "municipal council", but I'm not sure if a native speaker would say it like that.
 - German: "Gartenamt" - is there a better translation for it instead of "parks department"?
 - German: "naturnaher Landschaftspark" - I think my version "nature-oriented landscape park" doesn't sound very English... any suggestions?
 - German: "Im See kann man baden" - English: "You can go bathing in the lake" - I think my English version sounds more informal than the German original, but I can't think of a better translation?
 (Stühlinger Church Square)
 - German: "nachdem durch den Bau der Stadtbahnbrücke (heute Stühlinger Brücke) 1983 Teile der alten Fläche wegfielen, die aber an anderer Stelle wieder ausgeglichen wurden." - English: "after some parts of the former area were removed in 1983 due to the building of the city train bridge (today’s Stühlinger Bridge). The area, however, was evened out." - I'm not sure about this whole part. Doesn't it sound complicated and strange? Especially the last sentence looks quite wrong to me.
  - German: "Unter der Stühlinger Brücke" - English: "beneath the Stühlinger Bridge" - beneath or under or below or something else?
  - German: "das Abschlusskonzert der Freiburger Parade von Basel Tattoo" - English: "the final concert of the Freiburg parade of Basel Tattoo" - I don't like the two "of"s, but wouldn't "the Freiburg parade's final concert of Basel Tattoo" sound strange, too?
  - German: "Stadtteilmobil" - I couldn't think of a way to translate this. Also, I'm wondering if it might be okay to just leave it out (as I did)?
  - German: "Einer spuckt. Einer schluckt." - This is hard to translate.

Articles in Progress[edit]

The project “culture and conference center”

In 1982 changes of government on all political levels led to a short-term interruption of the efforts to put up a big public building. Two years later minister-president Lothar Späth guaranteed mayor Rolf Böhme financial support by the federal state. In March 1984 the project study “culture and conference center” was conducted and approved by the local council.

Following the idea of having an open space in front of the railway station, which had been suggested earlier, this study used a city-owned plot in the immediate vicinity of the station. As the building fit in the existing architecture of the city instead of towering above it and as the construction costs came to an estimated 44 million dollars, the study was considerably more realistic and adequate to the scarce public financial resources than the previous study, which failed.

Development and Changes since the Opening

During the Pope’s visit to Germany in 2011 the ‘Konzerthaus Freiburg’ was one of Benedict XVI’s stops. The Pope gave a speech there, to which important figures, representing the Church and society were invited.

The flat roof is designated for mandatory remediation, which will take place from summer 2015 to 2017. It is then expected to be equipped with solar cells.
