WQIO 93.7 FM - "Ohio's Super Station"
My contribution has been marked for speedy deletion. Frankly, I don't understand why. Can you help me or suggest how I can correct it. I am only trying to promote a historical time of this radio station from back in the late 1980's when it was extremely popular in Ohio. Christmas past
I added copyvio to the reasons when I deleted her. Anything starting "Critically acclaimed emerging vocalist" is going to be a copyvio, especially when 2008 is the latest date mentioned... A quick gsearch revealed that her emergence seems to be stalled at that date. The bit I quoted is also a bad thing to say on WP - 'emerging' meaning not yet, and 'critically acclaimed' means the public haven't cottoned on yet. I like working with words..... Deletion vote templates
I notice you have created {{User:Userfy}}, {{User:Redirect}}, etc. These are almost eligible for speedy deletion under criterion U2: even though the users Userfy (talk · contribs), Redirect (talk · contribs), etc. may exist, they probably do not want deletion vote templates as their user page.
I suggest you move these templates into template space, perhaps at {{vote-redirect}}, etc. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:32, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Per the TfD, they cannot be recreated in the template space. I decided that like most userboxes, the templates could be placed in userspace instead. Third Opinion
Hey Σ , im looking for a third opinion and i asked my adoptee but he doesnt seem to be responding :/
Do you think that a user was right to removed the flags in this article?

His arguement was this:
It's an offshoot of a problem that was most evident in human and animal longevity articles. The most relevant sections are here and here. One issue with using flags is that they can be misleading. For example, read the sentence, "Hideki Matsui is a baseball player in the 
United States"; true, but Matsui is and considers himself Japanese. He only plays in the US because we have better baseball, he doesn't refer to himself as an American; sticking an American flag next to his name could lead people to think that he now considers himself to be an American. Similar things can happen with war veterans; Ernest Hemingway fought in the Spanish Civil War with Spanish forces, but was himself American. The other issue, which is far more pointed in longevity articles but still an issue here, is that nationality isn't always important. In the case of (just for fun) the war between the Red and White armies in the USSR, it doesn't really matter whether the White Army soldier was British, Russian, or American, it's more important to emphasize that the soldier fought for the Mensheviks. A final small point that's worth noting is that flag icons take up a considerable amount of bandwidth because they're transcluded onto pages; the List of living supercentenarians article, before all the flag icons were removed, took my computer a lot longer to load than it does now. Even though we aren't usually supposed to worry about performance, one of the exceptions is if you notice a change, and you can confirm that it's something specific causing it. I hope that helps.
However mine was that if i put the flags as allegience instead of birthplace , and stating the point that its the country they fought and served for and they still have the flags in the WW1 veterans page and state them as allegience ; even flagbio states that you are allowed to add flag icons to make it more clearer and even more so since its a large list and its also easier to sort and since im pretty much the only person actually bothering to edit that article i dont know why he should get preference nor do i know what gives one editor the right to change it on the ww2 paage and when i changed it back and instead of birthplace i changed it to allegience he reverted it back again (Note that this was a couple of weeks ago but it stills relevant because it hasnt been resolved) and he also got quite irritable.
It does say you are allowed to add flags for millitary purposes :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:MOSFLAG#Flags it says -
Flag icons may be relevant in some subject areas, where the subject actually represents that country, government, or nationality - such as military units, government officials, or national sports teams. In lists or tables, flag icons may be relevant when the nationality of different subjects is pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself.

- First off, you shouldn't call people trolls. My opinion on the matter is that you should add the icons for the first few instances of each country, to familiarise the reader with them, and leave the rest of them as is. True although it was annoying that he kept changing it and according to the wikipedia rules it is allowed for millitary purposes,despite the fact that im pretty much the only person actually bothering to edit the page and noone supported him either. - Σ, there's a history to this you're not aware of. WP:FLAGBIO is very explicit about not using flag icons for certain things. The "one editor" is me (and incidentally, two other editors supported me); down this road lies madness. Look at the history of List of living supercentenarians for what I mean. - I got bored of the icons used in Ais523's script (I don't do javascript so I can't make my own), saw that {{support}}, {{oppose}}, etc. got deleted by TfD, and as content in the User: namespace is given more leeway than in other namespaces, like a userbox, I simply created the templates in userspace. →Στc. 05:08, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

- I see you've already mentioned this script, and I just wanted to mention something interesting: your templates are confusing to users of that script (including me) because they have a different color and size. I thought that was interesting. (I'm referring to when you use them at XfD (keep, delete, move), they're more confusing than the support and oppose ones.) Examples:

• My research is about how people present themselves online.
• I will look at how people present themselves when presenting themselves to the Wikipedia community.
Study Procedures
• With your consent, I will analyze the language of your user page and gather basic statistics such as the count of words, the frequency of words, the number of sections, and so on.

Young people
It's a little heartless, perhaps, to use the standard warning templates instead of a personal notice when young people under 12 post their autobios as an article. I changed the deletion reason for one you speedy tagged from A7 to A2, test page, as I usually do in such cases, deleted the template, and gave a personal explanation. - most people use the standard templates most of the time, & I certainly wouldn't have brought this up at all to you, because using one is considered perfectly acceptable. That wasn't the real point of the message. It was using the template in this particular situation: the apparent age of the user. This person needs something important: he needs to be told it is not safe that at that age to put your age and name together with identifying information such as your school class on the internet. See WP:YOUNG for our standard practice. I should have made that clearer to you--my fault in that. (As for what age to concern ourselves with, opinions vary--I usually do 13 or lower. Some advocate 18 or lower, but I don't think in the present day & age that's realistic.)
- As an aside, I am, in fact thinking of rewriting the basic template; I could get it down to 3/4 the size & say the same thing, with more focussed advice. And there's a delusion that polite expressions help; what helps is friendly but clear brevity. People tend to read the first line of notices, they see the word "deletion" and that's the last you see of them. But this is something I will work on elsewhere
- What will always be the case, no matter how good the template, that something that looks like a mechanical message is unfriendly. It also always helps to make clear that you've actually seen and understood the actual article they were trying to write. You can incorporate a sentence in the standard template now, but an entirely "hand-written" message is still more helpful, & no matter how good a template I write I would use it only where there's no reason to expect the editor might become a useful Wikipedia (& even as is I often use the standard ones myself in such situations as corporate spam-- they know perfectly well what they are doing--if they seem really not to understand, i do try to say something which might communicate more effectively.) But that's your choice, & I know I'm probably in a minority. Most people seem not to want the responsibility of writing their own messages. DGG ( talk ) 23:59, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Yeah thanks Σ , so far so good. Usually i leave the more disputed articles for more experienced members to decide anyway, I try and just tag the ones that are clearly irrelevant, either that its someones family member or friend (That's when its obvious A7 would apply), or merely just plain vandalism like ones that call so and so is such and such etc. Goldblooded (talk) 07:19, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Twinkle

- Twinkle works on IE9, but not earlier IE versions. If you have a Windows Vista computer you may need to upgrade to IE9, if you have Windows 7 you should already have IE9.
