WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was United Kingdom Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I removed your CSD tag at Bynari because this article is about a software and not a company. Sadly we have no CSD tag for software/products. Please use PROD or an afd tag. Regards, mabdul 11:40, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

I've placed a PROD on the article because it does not seem to have any potential to pass WP:NSOFT. --Bmusician 12:59, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
I disagree. The article seems to be poorly written about a company. Futhermore, there is {{Infobox company}} on it, and as such, I have restored the tag. →Στc. 00:33, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah you might be right!
/me is expanding it - so it might be worth to keep it... mabdul 01:39, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, finishing for today, please take it to AFD if you want this article still gets deleted... I will search tomorrow for more stuff... mabdul 02:57, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:51, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Sigma!

If you are interested in summation look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ascoldcaves. The full proof of the summation formula you can see at www.oddmaths.info/indefinitesum. In the article there is a single summation formula to sum any analytical function with any summation boundaries. If you are a user of “Mathematica” there is at the bottom left of the page of the site a button “examples”. Opening the examples in “Mathematica” you can choose an analytical function at your choice and arbitrary complex boundaries and calculate your sum.

  Ascold.

Speedy deletion declined: Friends (Mocca 2004 album)

Hello Σ. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Friends (Mocca 2004 album), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: the artists article exists. Thank you. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 10:39, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

It's not world peace or anything, but I have to say, as an incorrigible forgetter of the {{pp-semi}} tag on pages I protect, I really appreciate your bot following me around and adding this for me. Good idea, thanks. Cheers. --Floquenbeam (talk) 02:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Hey

We both r new page pattrollers. At times we collide. Dont know about u bt when i m just about to tag a page for CSD, I c that a edit conflict occurs with u as u would also tag it for the same. Such happened to me thrice. Even once u changed a tag by me which was under G3 to G11 without any proper reason, n that page wasnt 'Unambitious Advertiz' bt ambitious. But it could have been deleted in either way as the patrolling admin told me over here. Anyways, I just wanted to know at wat UTC time r u online on wikipedia? Yasht101 06:05, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I am usually active near the general timeframe of 01:00-4:00. →Στc. 07:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

The note on my page,

I did not want to get involved in an edit war so I did go to the talk page and only after a lengthy discussion and seeking third opinions did I restore it as per policy WP:NOTESAL. I've cited my reasons and discussed it at length with the editor who remains anonymous. As the discussion wraps up with the consensus and third opinion was it should be added. I put them back only after arriving at this conclusion per policy in regards to that third opinion on said policy. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 06:57, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Republic of China article

Since you have previously discussed about the Republic of China, I guess you are interested to share your insights at Talk:Republic of China#Requested Move (February 2012). Thanks for your attention. 61.18.170.173 (talk) 19:04, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

You Laugh you lose

Thanks for requesting speed deletion of this. I see far too often that something tragically pointless like this winds up on Wikipedia and it remains there and can't be removed because it becomes old enough that people assume it is worth while. --RichardMills65 (talk) 23:11, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

No problem, it's what I usually do on Wikipedia. →Στc. 23:42, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship#What this page has become

I'm all for closing down threads that get out of hand on that page, but there was no reason to close down that thread. Yes, your close reason is technically correct, but that's the least contentious thread I've ever seen on that page, so I think closing it is a bad thing; we've been deprived of a forum to blow off steam at the process. Sven Manguard Wha? 13:27, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

I've heard that this is an equally useful forum for blowing steam off. →Στc. 19:40, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Right... Sven Manguard Wha? 20:37, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
The time spent on that thread could have been spent reviewing some of those 300 articles, yes. →Στc. 23:42, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Technically you're correct, however you are walking on very dangerous ground with that comment. You can promote, you can even recommend, that people do something, however any time you (the generic you, not the specific you) move into the 'should' or 'better' territories ('you should do this instead of that' or 'working on X is better/more valued than working on Y') you are imposing your own personal values on others, and indirectly but quite clearly devaluing their contributions. The sole exception to this, the only case where you can tell people not to work in a specific area (without getting other people really, really pissed off) is when the other person is violating policy or creating disruption. Yes, in this it's only a thread at wt:RFA, but it's not your place (and this time it is the specific you) to decide how other people spend their time. If you want to close the thread, fine, I'm really not going to argue with that. If you then go on to tell people how to better spend their time, we are going to have an issue. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:33, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
P.S. I've done over a dozen GANs, and have decided that they are something that I don't find enjoyable to work on, and therefore have stopped doing then.

i m sorry to trouble u again. But can i know that how did u get that message tempelate that shows up whenever someone leaves a message for u at the bottom of their post? Yasht101 15:45, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Spam page

Hi there, you might know me from RSW as Bluefire2. I just joined Wikipedia, and while I was looking up userpages that already exist to find myself a good unreserved account name, I found this. While it is all nice and clean, it looks like spam or whatever you call it when companies use Wikipedia to advertise. I was looking for an admin to report this to, and then I remembered you from RSW. So here I am.

Also, how do you do that st00f with the "push to type" thing on top of your talk page? I thought you could only do that with some MediaWiki page... LiquidbluefireTalk 11:30, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

I've tagged the page for speedy deletion. Thank you for bringing this up.
Regarding the "push to type", I used the <charinsert> tag in my editnotice. And please do not use transclusions for your signature, as per WP:SIG#Transclusion_of_templates_.28or_other_pages.29. Thank you again. →Στc. 20:45, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Other stuff 2

Hi! I need your help in stopping the speedy deletion of my article LivingStory. The very idea of making the page is to give the idea of "permanent digital storage for individual consumers". This is a new concept as everyone associated the concept of cloud computing only with the big businesses. To my knowledge this is the first company providing this facility to for personal usage. Please do recommend any particular changes to the article to save it from speedy deletion. Thank u (Tani12 (talk) 23:55, 20 March 2012 (UTC))

Speedy deletion may be too speedy?

Hi Σ,

I happened to be around the New Pages area and noticed you have placed a speedy on a new Wikipedian's article. The user you targetted User:Csb220 had just joined Wikipedia at 00:31, 23 March 2012, and tried to submit the article What happened to goodbye? at: 00:54, 23 March 2012‎, at which point he and his/her article have been bombarded with different deletion notices by different people, every few minutes.

I just thought I would bring this to your attention since you seem to be invloved in such deletions. I believe that people who volunteer their time to Wikipedia should be subjected to a more friendly reception here if we want them to stick around and become productive.

List of tags

Hey, E, can I call you E? Is there a list of speedy deletion tags I can use? I know you and the other admins are busy with the thousands of speedy deletions currently in backlog, but it would be a big help. Juggalo1010 (talk) 00:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, and yes. A list can be seen at either Template:Db/doc or the full list with explanations can be seen at WP:CSD. Alternatively, you may use Twinkle and have a tab at the top of a page, which helps you tag pages in a swift manner. →Στc. 01:06, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to Florida 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
