WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Issue

Excuse me, but you keep adding another sandbox header, when there is one. Is something going on with you or what?--24.13.169.19 (talk) 21:17, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Bot gone haywire?

Per the bot's edit war at User talk:Quadell should it be blocked? EdJohnston (talk) 02:55, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Quadell let me use his talk page for the trial.[1] We shouldn't need to take serious action, because the bot isn't actually editing automatically yet. Σσς(Sigma) 03:02, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Lowercase sigmabot III's archiving of my talk page

Σ, I imagine you've already pored over your test of your bot that ran on my talk page a short while ago. But I thought I'd offer my own comments, in case I noticed something you didn't.

The edit archived two consecutive sections on my talk page, both at least 21 days old as of their most recently dated post, which is what should have happened.

From my perspective, there were two minor formatting glitches that I hope you'll be able to address:

First, it didn't retain the single blank line between each section. It appears that the bot removes everything from the section header down through but not including the next section header, since no blank line was included above the moved section header in the archive. (It looks like Miszabot III sometimes neglected to include the blank line before the first moved section as well, but it's not ideal behavior.)

However, an extra line was added between the two sections that I thought were being moved as a unit to the archive, so something minor went wrong there, since there are now two blank lines between the sections where there had been only one. Should that extra blank line have gone above the first section, or below the second section, perhaps? At any rate, something for you to check and fix before your next set of test runs.

Best of luck, and thanks for taking this on! BlueMoonset (talk) 05:23, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

I think I've fixed it. Thank you for your report. Σσς(Sigma) 05:38, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Great! Thanks for the quick work. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:46, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Lowercase sigmabot III

Hello Σ! Is the bot acting well? I've seen you been undoing some activities from the bot. Huggle is detecting lots of the bots edits as part of it's filter. ///EuroCarGT 01:08, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

I've just fixed a bug, and it's a Sunday, so you have until Friday before my next major test run. :) Σσς(Sigma) 01:13, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
So it's a test run before getting the 'Bot' user group? Also whats, "so you have until Friday", sounds scary! ///EuroCarGT 01:19, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes. Bots must go through a request for approval before they are allowed the bot usergroup, in order to prevent buggy bots (like this one is right now) from wreaking havoc and destruction without human oversight.
And I'll be too busy during the weekdays to have enough free time for Wikipedia, therefore, most of my editing is sparse and tends to be higher on weekends. Σσς(Sigma) 01:23, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay! Thanks for telling me. Hopefully it will pass! ///EuroCarGT 01:28, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
