Eliminating shadow vs countershading

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your interest in camouflage. Shadow means the shade cast (on the ground, etc) by an object; countershading is a system of coloration to eliminate the appearance of self-shading (which always occurs), whereas shadow elimination actually covers the shadow by reshaping the body; these are distinct mechanisms.
