You're simply wrong about not being able to "win" an award. Check Merriam-Webster here. The prime example given for English usage of the word award is:

"A film that has won several awards."

See also the Google graph I linked you showing that books published since about 1993 are more likely to say someone "won" an award than that they were "given" an award. You were right once, but not for at least 20-25 years.
