Mass categorization[edit]

There has been a lot of work done on this category in recent years, mostly by User:Bloodofox. If you look at Category:Cryptids you can see it's defined as a term used by cryptozoology proponents, however just because it's used to describe a certain legendary creature on a web page somewhere on the internet doesn't mean we can use it in the article about that legendary creature. For that, we need high quality sources that are not part of cryptozoology (WP:RS, WP:FRIND) to be cited. For example, Nain rouge is an old legend of Detroit. Just because it's listed in The Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology (or similar) as a cryptid, we cannot categorize it as such. Wikipedia's job is not to blindly report what pseudoscience publications say, it's to report what independent third-party sources have said about what pseudoscience publications have said. So something like Jersey Devil can be classified as a cryptid because this designation was made notable by it's discussion in independent sources. - LuckyLouie (talk) 18:04, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
