I wasn't being too serious. Can you help me sort out the "alma mater" problem in info boxes? For that reason I should come along to a Meetup. The USyd Wikibomb day looks amazing. Mike Baird is a good example. Instead of Education the info box has Alma mater. Some say that is only your tertiary institution. I dispute that but more importantly most people who have been Premier of NSW haven't been educated beyond high school. All info boxes should list Education and whatever levels are known should be listed: primary, secondary and tertiary. By the way, Citoid will probably arrive here on Monday afternoon (PDT; about 20 hours from now). The decision will depend mostly on the reports from French and Italian Wikipedia. If any new problems have popped up, then it'll stay frozen at the two-wiki mark. But my e-mail inbox isn't on fire, so I'm assuming that all's well there. There were some unexpected doi-related problems last week, but I believe that patch has already reached production. We'll see—and do please let me know if you try it out and have any thoughts on it. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Mix'n'Max

What do I do when it offers me something that I know has a Wikipedia article but is NOT one of the many suggestions it makes? What do I do when it offers me something that I know has NO Wikipedia article. Is that a "Not Applicable?" Kerry (talk) 05:28, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

@Kerry Raymond: When there is a wikipedia article (or any other wikidata item) then press "set Q" and paste in the wikidata page number e.g. "Q4865984". You can get this from the wikipedia page by clicking on the "Wikidata item" link in your tools menu. When there is NO wikipedia article or existing wikidata item, then choose "new item", and you will be creating a wikidata item for that locality. Only if it's a really bad area like "other territories" would you choose N/A. Finally, limiting to Queensland is not possible in game mode, but the list of unmatched items is already sorted according to states, and Queensland currently starts part way down page 50. Ah, then I have probably created a number of N/As then that I should not have. The other question is what do I do if we have a Wikipedia article of that name, say it's an article about the mountain/creek/island as a geographical feature with some kind of geographical info box rather than as a corresponding locality article which uses the infobox Australian place (assuming that they are the "same" place from a geocoord perspective)? Is that OK to point to the geo article (given it isn't expecting anyone to insert population data in it)? Kerry (talk) 06:17, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

@Kerry Raymond: Great. When I use non-game mode I keep a separate search tab open in both wikipedia and wikidata. But I agree that game mode is easier. The geographic feature thing is interesting, and one I'm not totally sure about. There is a way of tracking these down later. I'd suggest creating a new item when it would be weird to write the population into the article, but assigning it whenever you could tack on "a community lives there" in the wiki article. It would be hard to add this for a river or lake, but would be easy for a mountain or island. Comments on this @Canley: @Mattinbgn:? --99of9 (talk) 06:31, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

If the geofeature is small enough to more-or-less fit into the locality, we usually combine the articles and cover both the geo and settlement aspects, which works for small lakes, small island and mountains usually. Although people who are interest in geo, only write the geo "half" of the article and ditto those interested in human settlement (like me) tend only to write the locality half.But rivers are generally much longer and flow through the locality that takes their name but also flow through other places, so we generally do two articles, e.g. Foo River (Queensland) and Foo River, Queensland. So maybe that is the rule of thumb, point to the geo article if the locality article could feasibly "share it" or do a New Item if the locality article would have to separate? I think the only non-locality subclass items I have matched have been national parks with residents and very few of those. Most of the Something River or Mount Something names have had an article or item for the locality aside from the geographic feature, I have created a few new ones though. --Canley (talk) 05:45, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

With MixnMatch, when I click on Australian SSCs, I get what appears to be a progress indicator. Last night I set myself the goal of not stopping until it passes 40% matched. Eventually in my late night befuddled state, I realised that I could never achieve this goal as the progress page doesn't actually update. It remains stuck tantalisingly at 39.9% because it seems the number of articles Matched is not changing. Am I doing something very wrong? Kerry (talk) 02:15, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

I see to have read-only access to it. This is presumably because I don't see my name at the top of the screen so I presume this means I am not logged in, but I cannot find a way to login. Yeah, I figured it was the cookies as a possibility. I had done everything you do when "weird shit" happens (OS updates, browser updates, cache including cookies cleared, reboot). Nothing worked. Now an hour or so later and several suburbs away from home, having done nothing else at all, it magically worked, prompting me for the OAuth. Buggered if I know. But I least I now have restored Lismore (incredible that I could remove without login, surely a bug rather than a feature?!). Ok, I have done all of the Qld ones, except for these which are here in the unmatched list but when I try to set them as "New Item", all give this error "Item Q31015696 already has label "Maaroom" associated with language code en, using the same description text. Now, I believe I have set all of these previously, so this does not surprise me, but I don't know why they are still in the unmatched list. Anyhow, I shall now work on some of the other states. @Kerry Raymond:@Canley:@Mattinbgn: Wow, nice work. Instead of setting new item, just press set Q and paste in the item you already made. I'm also not sure why it's still showing up on your unmatched list. Perhaps there were duplicates in the original list, or it didn't register properly within MixNMatch when you pressed new item last time (i.e. it created the item, but forgot to update its match list). The next step is to do a bit of checking before we do any bulk actions which rely on the data we've just matched. You might have noticed I reverted a few of your edits like this. I found them using wikidata:Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P4014, just scanning down to see any items which had two SSCs associated with the same item. I think I got most of them today, but tomorrow more may pop up. The other place to look for problems is these categories: category:Australian Statistical Geography Standard 2011 ID different from Wikidata and category:Australian_Statistical_Geography_Standard_2011_ID_not_in_Wikidata. They should be getting emptier as we add codes that editors have already used on those pages, but if we don't eventually match their codes, there is something to investigate. One issue here is that the categories don't automatically update (sometimes until someone edits the page in the category) - if you need to test this, you may need to visit the pages themselves, and perhaps even perform a null edit. After that... we can get new ASGS tables with their mappings from 2011 to 2016, do a bit of spreadsheet work, and submit property values for wikidata:Property:P4093 using a tab separated list in QuickStatements. Or at least that's how I imagine things going! I'm sure there will be issues along the road. --99of9 (talk) 05:21, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

We should probably have had a chat about a common approach, but as far as I can see we pretty much ended up doing the same things anyway. @Kerry Raymond: I only used the N/A tag in Mix'n'Match for Special Purpose Codes like "Migratory - Offshore - Shipping" and "No usual address" where there is never going to be a Wikidata item for them. In some cases where there is data in the state gazetteers I've created a new item, but that's pretty slow going. I suppose you've all seen the ghastly duplicates from the bot-generated Swedish/Cebuano Geonames imports—merging them is something I'd like to tackle in future but I've been ignoring them unless they are the only corresponding item. --Canley (talk) 05:39, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

To merge the ceb ones, this query might help. It counts all Australian uses of particular geonames IDs. If there are two items with identical geonames IDs, chances are they should be merged. --99of9 (talk) 05:57, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

I too am only using N/A in the same way. I did some initially for other reasons but remove them later. If I cannot find a Wikipedia article corresponding to the SSC that meets my definition of "I would be OK to see the SSC population added to this article", I create a New Item. I work on the theory that, when in doubt, it is probably easier to merge wikidata items later than to demerge them (unscrambling the egg is usually more difficult). When I have linked an existing Wikipedia article's wikidata to the SSC, I am not making any guarantees that there is an "infobox Australian place" in that article ready to receive the SSC data, simply that it is semantically the correct article. I also encountered some Queensland SSCs for which there were semantically corresponding Wikipedia articles but the article did not have any Wikidata link; for these, I added New Item. Because I have limited experience with wikidata, I may have overlooked wikidata entries that existed because they were not already matched to their corresponding Wikipedia article. The other problem I had when looking in page mode (which I used when I was just trying to work on Qld because it was more productive as I know Qld very well) is that the name of the SSC is over on the far left but the actions are over to the right but a line lower (poor GUI design). I found this separation difficult to keep lined up, and caught myself a few times doing the action for the wrong SSC, so this may well have happened without my catching it (it's not a problem that can happen in game mode, but it's much less efficient working across different states). I had a few problems with MixnMatch going into a "zombie mode" where it appeared to be interacting at the GUI level but was evidently NOT making any backend changes on the wikidata itself (I did dozens of Qld places starting with "M" that had to be redone later, so I suspect it is possible for the MixnMatch tool and the underlying wikidata to be out of kilter with respect to "matched/unmatched" for similar kinds of reasons). Finally there are some 2011 SSCs that are no longer official Qld place names now in 2017; however they were all places that did not have a Wikipedia article (remote undeveloped areas mostly) so I just made them New Items for these ones. So there is a lot of scope for errors due to any of the above, but I always used the principle of "is this going to relate the SSC to the semantically corresponding Wikipedia article that should have that SSC's population data" since that is the end goal. I will probably tackle NSW places next as that is probably the state for which I have the next best personal geographic knowledge and the next best familiarity with their official place name website (an invaluable tool in this activity). But I will have to take some time out over the weekend to do some work to set up for Qld WikiClub on Monday (our theme is NAIDOC Week and we will be expanding a number of Qld place articles with indigenous history content, which is available under CC-BY so that should be quite productive!). In the meantime, if you're still itching for something to play with, there are Tourism Regions and National Resource Management Regions. However these are trickier, because the ABS doesn't seem to actually have a link to show you the boundaries of each region. We can get them as KML files, but that is a whole lot of work for something perhaps not very important (i.e. we are unlikely to import automatic statistics for Resource Management Regions). --99of9 (talk) 07:29, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Are we going to do UCLs too? A lot of people like them for city/town articles. There's fewer of them than SSCs (or so I think). In Qld at least, we have a lot of articles about a place that is gazetted as both a town and a locality so there are both UCL and SSC populations for them (occasionally they show the same number, but mostly different numbers). Oh, and the LGAs too. I don't know if we care about the various SA1/2/3/4 as I don't think they generally map that welll onto articles. I'd leave them for manual entry by anyone who feels that they are useful for some specific purpose. Personally I don't think we need to care too much about Tourism/Resources; I suspect we may not have good mappings onto Wikipedia articles for these in any case. I notice in Qld we have loads of articles on National Parks but virtually none on Resource Reserves. While there is lots of exciting stuff in the census, I think we should keep our focus on what can be realistically automated/semi-automated to reduce the workload of what would otherwise would be done manually. Hold for the moment, because I've still been finding a few errors, and the category of mismatches Category:Australian_Statistical_Geography_Standard_2011_ID_different_from_Wikidata is still pretty large (I think we should investigate each one). I'm also still not sure how we can get the CONF_VALUE onto Wikidata. I think the best wouuld be as a qualifier to the SSC codes, but I haven't found an appropriate qualifier yet, and am wondering if we need to propose one of our own. CONF_VALUEs would help with whether to draw populations from those SSCs or whether to put a note against them when a wiki template calls them. • I'm just having a look at the ABS 2011 -> 2016 correspondence table, and it looks like the 2016 geography seems to be far more detailed than the 2011 data. For 2011, there are 8,524 SSCs, with 8,475 in Wikidata. In 2016, there are 14,860 SSCs, and there are just over 4,000 with 1:1 geographic match between years. So for example: the 2011 SSC Aberfoyle (SSSC10006) corresponds to five 2016 SSCs: SSC10008 Aberfoyle, SSC10585 Brockley, SSC12425 Lyndhurst (Armidale Regional - NSW), SSC14146 Wards Mistake, SSC14376 Wongwibinda. I wonder if the 2016 data is far more accurate to the GL data? If so it could solve our "multiple GLs in one SSC problem", but could require a lot more matching! --Canley (talk) 10:23, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

• Interesting! So we're likely to have to match at least one large set. If we do SSCs we get 4000 for free. If we do GLs, we could follow the resulting weblink and scrape the SSC from it? I just found a 2011 template calling a 2006 ID. So far most of the errors have been on the wiki page not wikidata, but some used SA2 codes which I added as alternatives to wikidata. Robert Fowler page

Hi @99of9:, I'm posting here as I'm pretty new to Wikipedia and have a question about creating a new page, and you state on your user page that you like helping newcomers, so I trust this is OK?? I'm starting slowly with my editing career by checking through the To Do list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/To-do and I'm looking at a request to create a page for Robert Fowler (surgeon/soldier). I've found several online sources where good biographies are written of him (eg this one: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/fowler-robert-10231) but I don't know the protocol for how much of that material I should use; and whether I can use a fair bit by attributing it to the original? I'm a bit confused because I've seen a recent new page which carried an attribution at the bottom of the page that I understood to imply that almost all the content was from government archives or something?? I'm sorry I'm sounding like a retard but this really is just a generic question regarding is there a protocol for using (and citing of course) significant amounts of content from pre-existing sources?? @Cabrils: Thanks for contacting me, I'm very happy to help. In 99% of cases (including the ADB), as a rule of thumb, you should not use any text from another source, because it is copyright and not under a compatible free license. The 1% like what you saw from a Government source (it may have been from a State Heritage office?), may be distributed under a CC-BY license, and clearly marked as such, in which case it's ok to use, but important to acknowledge.

Having said that, the sources you have found are excellent references. After reading them, you should write in your own words about the subject, citing any facts to their source (Help:Referencing_for_beginners). --99of9 (talk) 12:13, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Dead Links

Back in 2016 you created a page Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_South_Wales/To-do Many of the links in there have since turned to red. But over the past week I have corrected a number of New South Wales transport templates, which has resulted in most if not all "railway station" and "railway line" redirects pointed to from that page and still in black, are no longer used and hence could now also be deleted. Previously I found many stations and rail lines in the list, many in blue such as Armidale railway station, Sydney which was created because of the bug - obviously Armidale in not in Sydney. The new list only shows red items and no longer seems to contain the items which were previously in black. I had hoped to use the list to get someone to delete these redirects which are now no longer used. But that is now no longer possible. They are still present inWikipedia:WikiProject_New_South_Wales/Missing_topics My real question is: "How can I get someone to delete all these redirects without having to raise an individual request for each one?" @Fleet Lists: Oh right. I now understand a little better. You can still use the old version of my list to identify redirects you want to delete. In terms of how to get them deleted quickly though, I don't know. I'd suggest putting together a list and then giving it to an admin who can delete each with a few clicks.
