Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Alf Collins seemed less than neutral to me, so I removed it for now. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Qwerfjkltalk 14:57, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, Alfred Collins Archive. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Alfred Collins, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Your username

[edit]

Greetings! Please understand we're trying to work with you, not against you. Concern has been voiced that the username you have chosen is not compliant with our username policy. While it does not appear that "Alfred Collins Archive" references an actual organization, the name and some of the comments you have made give the impression that more than one person is using this account. This is not permitted (WP:ISU). Do you attest that you are the only one using this account or is there more than one person using it? It's ok if it's the latter, but we need to take action if that is the case. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:33, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Alf Collins Archive is just myself who is the editor and when I say we it is because I talk with my hubby as I learn how to do Wikipedia which has been such a learning curve.

I thought it was a good idea to use the user name Alf Collins Archive but if you are not happy with this I can try to changed it to something more anonymous?

I suppose what you are saying if we wanted to comment/edit on say another page this name does not work?

There is articles in several film books I can cite. There is a lot about Alf in the public domain but it is understanding how to reference it when it is not online. I thought you only wanted online references? How do I reference a book, do I have to get the books owner’s permission. If so how would I do that. Thank you for responding Alfred Collins Archive (talk) 16:06, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • No, references don't have to be online. But, we do need references for most material. In the upper right of your editing window there should be a drop down box labeled "Templates". Within that, there is a "cite book" template. The resulting dialogue box will have the fields you need to fill in to produce the reference. When you're done, you click 'Insert' and it will insert the reference in the proper format for you. Also note that references themselves do not need to be in the public domain. The content that goes into this project needs to be public domain or free licensed, but references do not need to be so. We're just using them as references.
  • In regards to the subject you want to write about, please be aware of the warning that was given to you above regarding conflict of interest. While it is possible to write about things with which you have a conflict of interest, it can be quite difficult to do so in a manner that complies without policies and guidelines, most especially when it comes to WP:NEUTRAL. It is usually best to make suggestions about what to change or add on the article's talk page. If you do that, and don't get a response, feel free to leave a message on my talk page or ping me (see {{ping}}) to the conversation and I'll have a look.
  • As to your username; now that you've asserted that you're the only one using the name, I think we're ok on that point. You can comment and edit other pages; what your username is does not preclude that.
  • Yes, the learning curve here can be quite daunting. It's an obstacle to new editors, and it has gotten significantly worse over the years. I've been here more than 10 years and I can tell you it was a LOT easier for a new editor to get started back in the day. Today, it's a lot more difficult. I'm confident you're acting in good faith here. It's ok to make mistakes. Just make new ones :) We're here to help, not hinder. You have access to and an interest in knowledge about Alf Collins. We welcome that. We just need to keep it in line with how we build articles here. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:52, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you that cite info helps a lot. I have printed up two Wikipedia film people and will study the wording and style used on their pages. I will rethink and type up information which hopefully will be better using your rules and then will work out how to post for you to review first. Where do I find {{request edit}}template please However do I add referencing after your review. Or how do I add in it somehow not in the actual edit page?

Alfred Collins Archive (talk) 11:50, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! You do not need to make an edit request to edit your own user talk page. For instructions on citing sources in Wikipedia, Referencing for beginners is a good place to start and includes an illustration of the editing toolbar. If you indeed have a Conflict of interest, for example if you are a family member, it's best not to edit the article directly but to make one or more Edit requests on the article's talk page. Thank you for your persistence! ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 12:24, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You can use this page, replacing "Page Name" in the input box with "Alfred Collins Alf Collins". ― Qwerfjkltalk 12:24, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
