User page[edit]

Hello again. I'm glad to see you took my advice. Good thinking. :) But I noticed you seem to be from India; oftentimes non-American or British editors speak another language besides English, which can be noted on the use page using Wikipedia:Babel. That might interest you. (My user page, for instance, notes that I am a native speaker of English and a amateur at French. Redwolf's, for instance, notes that he does both English and and Leet like a ntive. --Maru (talk) 23:45, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

soccer-europe.com[edit]

G'day Aabha R,

it's okay, provided you follow the instructions on the Category:Soccer-europe images page: use {{SocEur}} and add "Image © http://soccer-europe.com/" to the caption on any pages you use an image. For some reason he's given permission to use provided we do that, but hasn't updated the notice on the website. Ach, well. --fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 08:13, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Lampard[edit]

Hi Aabha,

I really like your article on Frank Lampard. We don't normally do complete rewrites of articles on Wikipedia though - imagine how annoyed you'd be if we put your article up and someone came along a month later and replaced the whole thing. However, with the article having a copyvio on it I can see why you did it that way rather than editing it directly.

The first thing we need to do is put the existing article through Wikipedia's copyright violations procedure. I've done that before with Gigg Lane, so if you give me the URL of the copyrighted article I can do that for you. If the Wikipedia article has always been a copyvio, it'll have to be deleted by an admin, in which case we can just copy your article to Frank Lampard afterwards. It's more likely that the article started off okay and then had the copyrighted text added to it, in which case it'll need to be reverted back to the last version without a copyvio. Once that's done, we can merge your changes into the article.

One other point about your article: the tables look great, but they need something saying what date they are valid to as they'll quickly go out of date otherwise.

CTOAGN 21:05, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for your note on my talk page. I've just had a quick look at your new article on Frank Lampard and it's looking good. I just think that you maybe trying for too much detail in his early career. Why don't you just mention he made 9 league apps, scoring 1 goal for Swansea. I don't think you need to be all that completist. Besides, not all sources seem to agree on how many appearances Frank made for the Swans anyway This source says 10(8league, 2cup) . But I would use this source from the FA as the best : here Majts 07:58, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I like the table, but I would change a couple of things. Remove red & yellow cards - they make it too complicated. E.g. Thierry Henry has some good tables that I think are both clear and informative. Don't worry about getting the stats absolutely perfect on his Swansea games though - someone will always correct it eventually if its wrong - that's the Wiki way. Majts 09:18, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'd keep the stuff on his early career in unless the article starts to look too long. When I put Denis Law through peer review and featured article candidates, people complained that there wasn't enough stuff on his early life. With regard to his Swansea appearances, it's probably best to cite whichever source you're using and mention that other sources disagree in a footnote. Normally I'd sooner have stats left out than risk having wrong ones put in, but if you get an authoritative source and cite it I think that's alright.
I've sorted out the copyvio, so it's ready to have your stuff merged in. There are guidelines on how to do this at Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages but they don't really apply here as you wrote your article in your user space instead of the main namespace. I'd just go through your version a paragraph at a time and work out where it should go in the main article. If it's on something that the main article doesn't have, just copy it in. Otherwise, you'll have to decide whether to keep the original version, use your version or mix the two - just choose what seems best to you. I'm happy to help with this - just leave me a message if you want a hand. CTOAGN 17:19, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Hey, Thanks - It took me ages to do it! Forbsey 22:15, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. Why is the article such a vandalism target? Well, plain and simply, it's because ManU sucks! BOO YA! Enjoying your debt this season? Etc. etc.

Okay, not really. It's just a general thing – sports teams attract that sort of immaturity. For a while there just keeping Sunderland A.F.C. free of Newcastle United F.C. fans was a devil of a job, for example. Meanwhile, ManU are so popular and well-known that it attracts even those vandals who've never even seen a football match. --fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 00:23, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lampard again[edit]

Hi Aabha,

I've been quite busy the last couple of days, so haven't got round to having a look at your changes. I should get the chance to do it in the next couple of days.

CTOAGN 03:19, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've had another look and it's good, you should definitely merge it in. I can make a start on it if you're not sure what to do, but the edit would be credited to my account instead of yours. I can always put something in the edit summary saying it was your text though. Let me know if you'd like me to do this
There's no need to worry too much about making mistakes - it's easy for someone to revert an edit if you get anything wrong. Have a read of Wikipedia:Be bold and feel free to change anything if you think you can improve it. As long as you aren't maliciously damaging articles (and I'm sure you won't be) nobody should give you a hard time.
I seem to be forcing too much work on you
Heh heh, you're not the only one. I'll have a look at the Shevchenko stuff soon. CTOAGN 00:32, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use image of Frank Lampard[edit]

It's probably alright, but I'm no expert on fair use. If no free images of Lampard can be found (very probably true), the image is fairly low-resolution (definitely no more than 400px wide, although it shouldn't be stored at a higher resolution than the article uses) and including it won't cost the copyright holder anything, it should be alright. I thought there was a Wikiproject relating to fair use but I can't find it. If you can find it, it would be worth asking them. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 14:16, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you put a good fair use rationale on it, it would be fine. Something along the lines of: 1. Used for encyclopedic purposes, 2. screen-resolution file used (does not diminish value of actual printed version), 3. distributed by company, does not reduce re-sell value of photo, thus probably doesn't cut into future profits at all. --Fastfission 15:12, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also like to point out that a simple headshot (http://www.chelseafc.com/images/players/mini/2051.jpg) has less artistic merit than an action shot and so should be used in preference. Dunc| 15:38, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Exceptional newcomer award[edit]

I've decided to give you en exceptional newcomer award. You're only the second person I've awarded this to, which should give you an idea of how impressed I am with your contributions to Wikipedia. Hope you stick around. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 18:22, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chelsea F.C.[edit]

Thanks for the encouragement Aabha R. The polite note seems to be working in stopping match by match commentary - but the vandals are still coming thick and fast! By the way, your Lampard article is awesome. Chelseaboy 15:15, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unused subs[edit]

Hi Aabha,

They aren't counted in England and I've never seen them counted in internationals or European competition. It's possible that other countries do things differently but I'd be surprised if they did. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 23:28, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey fuddlemark,

Can you please look at this article and tell me what else needs to be done for the clean-up tag to go? I asked User:Mandel, who'd originally tagged it, but haven't got a response as yet, so thought I'll get your opinion. Thanks. -Aabha (talk) 18:43, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Aabha,
It looks pretty good at the moment (good enough to remove the template, in my opinion). I'll take a look at what I can improve, and remove the template. If User:Mandel still thinks it needs cleanup and wants it re-tagged, hopefully he'll say what's wrong with it so any remaining problems can be fixed. fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 04:06, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that. It looks like the original text may be a copyvio. I don't have time for a full rewrite (work soon), but I'll cleanup what I can. Can you please take a look at the goal.com article and ensure that ours is not too similar? Cheers, fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 04:13, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Player list[edit]

Good idea, but I wonder if it's possible to generate the player names automatically by displaying the relevant national football player categories? It might be worth talking to sjorford as he's done this for clubs (as you probably know) and might have some ideas. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 00:12, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any quicker way I'm afraid - Wikinews has the DynamicPageList extension which would do just what you want, but it doesn't seem to be enabled for Wikipedia. Most of my football subpages were generated by hand, with a lot of manual checking along the way. I'll have more of a think and let you know if I have any bright ideas. sjorford mmmmm 13:34, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I was surprised that there was no way of displaying category items as a plain list. Looks like you'll have to do it by hand. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 00:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Malchom's picture[edit]

It's not really speediable, so I've listed it on IfD. In the meantime, a discussion has sprung up over whether or not the image was doctored, before VG Nett could get their hands on it. Thanks, fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 08:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, no, it doesn't matter. But that has nothing to do with IfD; it's a few other users who're interested in doctored images. Harmless fun, in other words. fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 16:27, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Burscough[edit]

I've reverted that - too much of it was a direct copy. There's a chance that the club might give permission if someone asks so I've mentioned it on the talk page. Nice work on the player list - that must have taken a while. I'll add a link to it from my football welcome message. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 16:51, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just finished doing the list (for now atleast!), and was feeling sort of jubilant 'bout the fact.

Nice one. Looks very useful.

Oh, by the way, how come I never got the football welcome message?

Can't remember. I usually only use it when I find someone who's just started editing football articles, as a slightly more relevant welcome message. If someone's been around a while or looks like they've already found those pages I don't normally bother. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 19:05, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is clearly a case of vandalism. I have reverted the incorrect tag, but the license information is rather minimal. I would highly recommend that you place some text as "permission given by ..., owner of ..." because of the fact that there is clearly a statment "nickaweb.com © All Rights Reserved" on the website main page. This might avoid future confusion. Have a nice day. --None-of-the-Above 08:14, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Language question[edit]

Hi, a new page recently appeared in a foreign language that we're having trouble identifying. It's in a Devanāgarī script, so I thought Hindi was the likely first guess. Can you have a look at the page (सरदार पटेल विद्यालय) and tell us if you recognize the language? Thanks! | Klaw ¡digame! 15:42, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • That was fast, thanks for the reply. Given the existence of the English page and your comments on NPOV, I'm going to suggest that the Hindi entry be speedied. I appreciate the help! | Klaw ¡digame! 15:53, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • Good idea. Maybe a note saying that this is the English Wikipedia and directing the user to the Hindi Wikipedia? Something along those lines should do it. Thanks! | Klaw ¡digame! 16:37, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Lampard photo[edit]

G'day Aabha,

what User:Sebas87 has done is upload a "new version" of the Frank Lampard image, but failed to update the text description/copyright info. Since he doesn't seem to intend to explain why we have a right to use these images, I've reverted back to the one you uploaded (to do this on an image, go to the last-known-good image and click the "rev" link next to it). Cheers, fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 08:39, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Philippines national football team[edit]

Thanks for the concern. I did check the last five edits made today (all made anonymously) and they seem right: the Philippines decided not to compete in the 2006 World Cup, choosing instead to focus on the youth and in regional competitions like the 2004 Tiger Cup and the 2005 SEA Games. However, I can't verify the first internationals score and the fact that the team did improve, but I'm still checking. --Akira123323 14:02, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help in categorization[edit]

Hi Beland,

I can see that you are very busy at the moment, so sorry for adding on to your work. I would like to help with the Categorization projects. I could start with Category:Images of people. Could you please tell me once what exactly needs to be done? I don't want to mess up anything, so it would be nice if you (or someone else) could. Thanks. -Aabha (talk) 07:33, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it's great you're volunteering - many hands make light work. There's growing consensus that free/public domain/copyleft images should be moved to the Commons. I have updated Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. I've never done it myself, so probably best to find an image person if you have any questions beyond the instructions there. There will be some "fair use" images left over. These I suppose can be left in the category. There are some other categories under Category:Wikipedia images by type which should probably be under Category:Images of people, instead of above it or along side of it in the category tree. To put an image or category into Category:Images of people, edit that page and add [[Category:Images of people]] near the bottom (above any interlanguage links). When you do this, you will see the image appear under Articles in category "Images of people" (possibly not on the first page, depending on the letter of the alphabet it starts with). Notice in Category:Images of people there are some people who appear above this header. This is because someone put a link to the image in the category page, instead of putting a link to the category on the image page. Go to the category page and hit "edit", and you will see what needs to be removed. You can add those images to the category using the correct method, or you can do the move-to-Commons thing if appropriate. If you have more than say, 50 "fair use" images of people left over in Category:Images of people, it's best to sort them into subcategories. You can make a new category by simply pretending it exists and adding an image to it. After you save that, follow the "red" link you just made. Edit the new category and put in a link to the "parent" category you want it to have. This will turn the links to it blue, because now it has a description page. (You may have to hit reload/refresh in your browser to see the color change.) I hope that all makes sense...probably it will be clearer after you read the tips page and figure out what the different copyright licenses mean. Thanks again! -- Beland 11:18, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Football AID[edit]

I think it died out because most people want to edit articles on their own clubs - there just weren't enough articles that a lot of people wanted to work on to make it worthwhile. If you think there are enough people who'd join in, by all means start it up again. I think it might work better at this stage if it was made completely informal and was kept to a discussion page where someone said "I'm working on (article): anyone want to join in?", but it's up to you. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 17:49, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't suggesting taking it out of the football wikiproject. Mentioning it on the project talk page sounds like a good idea. File:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 18:19, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aabha R. You've already tidy-up Fenerbahçe. I'm not very active on this wiki, because i'm a sys-op in tr-wiki. I checked the differences in tr and en versions of Fenerbahçe. You've cleaned much of Fenerbahçe, as you see it was written very fanatically. In the Turkish version only extra information is, about history of the club. Much of it is about pre-club history and about first years. May be its best to translate the headings in tr.wiki tr:Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü
  • 2 Tarihi - History
  • 2.1 Kuruluş öncesi Kadıköy - Kadıköy before Fenerbahçe's foundation
  • 2.1.1 Kadıköy Futbol Birliği - Kadıköy Football Union
  • 2.2 Siyah Çoraplılar - Black socks
  • 2.3 1899: Fenerbahçe'nin gerçek kuruluş yılı - 1899 Fenerbahçe's real foundation year
  • 2.4 Atatürk ve Fenerbahçe - Atatürk and Fenerbahçe
  • 2.5 1907: Resmi kuruluş tarihi - 1907 Legal foundation date
--Ugur Basak 19:54, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Extra information on tr.wiki is about pre-foundation and foundation. Sorry, i can't say anything about picture. It was uploaded in 2004 by a user who is not active for long time. Actually i want to start a project for all images in tr.wiki for verifying their sources etc. We need to clean them. tr.wiki has started growing about 3 months ago, and the system is not fully stable.--Ugur Basak 22:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I see what you're saying about the talk page. But the thing is that no one has to go to the talk page to do a minor edit. If both talk page and main page has it then firstly, it attracts faid as a whole and the fact the article is up for being improved which means the potential for more work to be done. Football infoboxes[edit]

Hi Aabha

For the patterns, have a look at Template_talk:Football_kit. la1 is the left arm, b1 is the body and ra1 is the right arm for the first choice kit. la2, b2 and ra2 are those for the away kit. The different patterns that you can use are listed at Template_talk:Football_kit, or you can leave them all blank if the kit is unpatterned (no stripes etc.). The other fields use hex triplets to give a colour for different parts of the kit. If you don't understand hexadecimal notation, you probably don't want to (it's counting to base 16 using A-F to represent 10-15 and "10" for 16, not that that will explain it), so the easiest thing is to copy one of the colour values from further down that page or find a club with a similarly coloured kit and copy the value that's used there. And thanks again for your message on my RFA. I was flattered. Cheers, CTOAGN (talk) 11:39, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I had a look on the other images and changed the tagging from "copyrighted free use" (wich basicaly means that people can do whatever they like with them) to the more apropriate "fair use in XXX" tag + a withpermission tag. Just because we have permission to show the image doesn't mean anyone can do whatever they want with it after all. I deleted the image you asked me to, but things tagged with "orphanded fair use" automaticaly show up on this list after a week, so there is generaly no rush, they will be dealth with a in a timely fashon. --Sherool (talk) 14:36, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
