Musicians from the Discussion[edit]

There were some musicians mentioned by the good editors from the Discussion for deletion: Cui, Mussorgsky, etc.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 02:21, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WHOA![edit]

I love the chart look. And the descriptions. And the little flags! Fantastic changes. I have no reservations.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 19:27, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great, I'm trying to help. Are you going to help add information to your article? :-) ? Viriditas (talk) 22:16, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will when I think of something. I've already been searching for refs for your lede sentences. But so far, I sense that your vision of this article is more defined, and cooler. At this stage, I think you should be the one to create the general article (i.e. the non-User:Abie article). I've also been trying to squeeze in the reason for Hendrix's discharge as well as his song and concert references to war in general, and to the Vietnam War specifically, but I ended up siding with the precedent you've set by focusing directly on each musician's military experience.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 22:28, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, I was offering help. This is not a topic that greatly interests me, but I am willing to work with you on it. I don't really have a vision for it, but I think we can flesh out a brief background and introduction about musicians in the military, list the most notable ones, describe their military careers, and any influence on their music. The military careers of Hendrix and Kristofferson, for example, have sourced examples of influence, but they have not yet been added. So, there is a lot of work to do, and I would encourage you to help out and contribute when you have time. Viriditas (talk) 05:02, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gilad Atzmon[edit]

Served during 1982 Lebanon War. Later claimed his experiences caused him to reach the conclusion that "I was part of a colonial state, the result of plundering and ethnic cleansing."

Please keep this article on topic, concerned with the relationship between military service and music. There are dozens of quotes about military service from each musician, but we should only be using the ones that concern music and the military. Using this article as a platform to criticize Israel or any other country is very easy to do, but it is essentially WP:COATRACK and POV. If Atzmon's experience in the war influenced his music, and he talked about that, then great, let's include it, otherwise this quote doesn't belong here. Viriditas (talk) 23:34, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 23:37, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lester Young[edit]

Good work on that entry. Viriditas (talk) 23:52, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll keep adding when I can.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 23:59, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Mighty Handful[edit]

Viriditas: Do you think we need to specify every member of this group?--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 00:47, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I move to delete two people from this list. Song Seung Hun appears to be more of an actor, in fact I found no reference to his singing, or other musicianship on his article. And James Last, I didn't find evidence on his article that he was an official member of the military. I'm curious what you think.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 01:48, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Mighty Handful group is historically notable and important, so yes, we need to specify all five members. I can't comment on Hun and Last without more info. Viriditas (talk) 02:32, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm removing Song Seung Hun for now. Viriditas (talk) 02:46, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also removed James Last after looking into it. Viriditas (talk) 02:51, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Data entry[edit]

Best practice is one entry only. Most notable names are listed only, and alternate or real names should appear in notes. Titles are not ranks, and should not overlap in the instrument category. One country per person. Viriditas (talk) 04:09, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

José Bernardo Alcedo[edit]

Why is he listed as Chilean? He's classified as a Peruvian composer[1] who lived in Chile. Viriditas (talk) 04:16, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I put the Chilean flag there because I thought we were listing flags according to the military served, and since he served on both, I added it. If you want to do it by nationality, then that's fine.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 04:34, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What source are you using that says he actually served in the Chilean mlitary? Viriditas (talk) 04:45, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No source. I stand corrected. And shamed.--Abie the Fish Peddler (talk) 05:00, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be silly. You saw something like it somewhere and added it. In any case, let's move on to the next level and help add sources. Sound like a plan? Viriditas (talk) 09:54, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
