September 2018[edit]

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, ActorJosephGatt, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:

  1. Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
  2. Please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles email is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:13, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are not allowed to edit Wikipedia while the threats stand or the legal action is unresolved.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  ... discospinster talk 18:13, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am Joseph Gatt. I have made no legal threats. I have only made edits and/or changes to my own page. Please explain why I have been blocked or if there's a way to prove that I am actually Joseph Gatt.
Thank you.
-JG ActorJosephGatt (talk) 18:23, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I am not an expert computer / Wiki editor. My sole reason for being on here is to contribute update to my own page.
Thanks for your understanding.

You are welcome to request an unblock by following the instructions in the block notice above, which I recommend you do given that the statement you made did not appear to be a legal threat, at least in my opinion. Though this is not to say that you will not remain blocked for a different rationale. However, even if you are unblocked, there are clear conflict of interest issues with respect to the edits you have made. Since it appears that you have not yet been made aware or warned of the conflict of interest guidelines, I recommend you review them here: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. A policy that is relevant to your situation is this one: Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#People_accused_of_crime.
There is also no need for you to prove that you are who you say you are as this looks like it's already been done in 2018. Uhai (talk · contribs) 02:12, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I was blocked a long time ago for simply wanting the correct information on my own wiki page. No legal threats were made. I was simply trying to convey how the wrong information could be very harmful to my career. I am only here to contribute to my own page and make sure that the facts are correct and upto date, because just like on IMDB, there is a lot of misinformation out there purporting to be fact. ::::Thank you so much. ::::-JG ActorJosephGatt (talk) 1:41 pm, 12 February 2024, Monday (20 days ago) (UTC−5)

Accept reason:

The legal threat has been dealt with. I will convert this to a WP:partial block and urge the user to follow the advice on dealing with articles about oneself I posted below in keeping with user:deepfriedokra/behalf. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 22:30, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You said in an edit summary that certain content "will cause litigation issues and could be liableous." Since you are Mr. Gatt, that certainly suggested you intended to initiate legal action, or at least use the possibility to obtain your desired result. You will need to agree to withdraw this possibility of legal action in order to be unblocked. You will also need to agree to pursue changes to the article about you in a manner consistent with the conflict of interest policy. 331dot (talk) 00:01, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was almost two years ago so cannot remember exactly the context of me saying "will cause litigation issues and could be liableous." I'm also not a computer tech so working on here is not intuitive. But I probably meant that the wrong information regarding my arrest (and much of what was being spread in the media was inaccurate) could have dire legal consequences to me. I wasn't threatening anyone on here. I tried to clarify this but was blocked right away without a chance to clarify. Hopefully this makes sense.
Would you be willing to pursue changes to the article about you consistent with the conflict of interest policy- which basically means you would make edit requests(click for instructions) on Talk:Joseph Gatt? 331dot (talk) 01:20, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  1. I agree that at first glance the edit summary, which included the words "It will cause litigation issues and could be liableous [sic]", looked like threat to take legal action over the content of the Wikipedia article, and I too would have blocked. However, looking at the context of the edit, and considering the comments above from ActorJosephGatt, I now think that impression may have been misleading. It seems to me very likely that it was actually intended to mean that having the information on display in as public a place as the Wikipedia article could have a biasing effect on the court case which was in progress at the time. If so, it was not a legal threat, so the block, while totally understandable, was a mistake
  2. Even if that was not the case, and at he time the block was justified, it is clear from comments above that ActorJosephGatt is not at present contemplating legal action, so the block is no longer necessary.
Either of those considerations would, it seems to me, justify removing the block.
  • 331dot, you mention the "need to agree to pursue changes to the article about you in a manner consistent with the conflict of interest policy", and you evidently regard an undertaking to do so a prerequisite for an unblock, which means that you are effectively extending the reason for the unblock, as the original block was specified to be for the "legal threat" alone. The material which ActorJosephGatt removed from the article violated the policy on biographies of living persons, and therefore should have been removed. It is true that there is generally a preference for the subject of an article to ask for someone else to make edits rather than make them themselves, but I can see several reasons why maintaining a block on the editor for failing to follow that procedure would not be a good step, including the following.
  1. Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons says "Although Wikipedia discourages people from writing about themselves, removal of unsourced or poorly sourced material is acceptable." (My emphasis.)
  2. Even if the policy did not explicitly say that, I think common sense would say that removing potentially harmful, and possibly even libellous, material about a living person, should be given sufficient priority to warrant immediate removal, rather than keeping it in place while a request is made for its removal, and then while one waits for someone to respond to that request.
  3. Even if neither of those applied, and the preference for people not editing articles about themselves were a firm rule (which of course it isn't) an inexperienced editor is unlikely to know that, and it is reasonable to give them a friendly warning, not a block. If that view is accepted, then it is at best questionable to keep someone blocked for something that was not blockworthy, just because they were previously blocked for something else, especially if, as seems likely, that block for something else was mistaken anyway.
  • In view of those considerations, I believe, as you have no doubt worked out by now, that the block should be removed. However, rather than removing it immediately, I am willing to leave this message and give you both a chance to comment if you wish to. JBW (talk) 01:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No objection to removing the block; my concern was rooted in trying to protect Mr. Gatt from accusations of whitewashing the article while carrying out his absolutely legitimate concerns, and also to help him avoid issues down the road in case he sought other types of changes. I'm aware that blatant BLP violations can be removed by the subject(which is spelled out at WP:COIU), and should have specified that any discussion could occur after the fact. 331dot (talk) 01:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree to unblocking if the appellant agrees to follow the recommendations I left in "Editing on your own or someone else's behalf". Thanks -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:09, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Discospinster, 331dot, and JBW:. I'm ready to unblock if y'all are. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 01:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    No problem here. 331dot (talk) 07:24, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If it is, I loved your work in God Of War, Star Trek, Thor and Dumbo. Not everyday we get a celeb on Wikipedia. 101.115.183.83 (talk) 04:52, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
