Hello Actualcpscm -- I've restored the unsourced material while the article is at AfD. Generally it's best to leave the article as is, unless there is anything defamatory present, so that editors can assess all the claims, which may well be sourceable. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 22:48, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Espresso Addict, hope you‘re alright.
I‘m not aware of such a practice, and it directly contradicts WP:BLP; I‘m sure I don‘t need to quote policy to you, but BLP is very clear on unsourced information about living persons.
A consideration that also goes into my thought process is that nominating an article at AfD automatically marks it as reviewed for the purposes of WP:NPP, which means that it’s going to be indexed by search engines in its current state. Before AfDing an article, I run some basic checks to ensure that the article complies with the policies with legal considerations; in practice, copyvio and BLP.
Maybe it would have been better to include a link to a previous revision of the article in the AfD nom for the reasons that you mention. I‘ll keep that in mind for the future. But I‘d much rather an article that: 1. is indexed by search engines and 2. might attract additional attention due to potential deletion be in compliance with BLP. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 23:01, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
My reading of the BLP policy is that one only must remove unsourced material from a BLP if it is contentious or clearly negative/defamatory. A quick look at this article (I'll recheck in a minute) suggests this does not apply here. My suspicion is that this is an autobiography, or at least written by someone who knows the subject.
I do not know whether the subject meets WP:PROF, but a very quick look at the GS profile suggested it was possible. Espresso Addict (talk) 23:11, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
BLP explicitly states that it does not just apply to negative material: Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—must be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. What constitutes contentious material is a bit less clear, but I‘d argue that this refers to the threshold of being „challenged or likely to be challenged“, which is clearly the case here.
Notability is a different question. I couldn‘t find evidence of any of the NACADEMICS auto-passes (e.g. named chair), nor any of the other criteria, as those would require independent sources. Of course, it‘s always possible that I missed something; that happens plenty to all of us :) Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 23:25, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
I don't think anything there falls under "contentious". As to WP:PROF, generally that goes by citation profile in cases where other points are not met. Espresso Addict (talk) 23:31, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
ETA I've marked it as unreviewed again. I think you should be able to do that? Espresso Addict (talk) 23:15, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
In principle yes, but I would assume the auto-review feature has sound reasoning behind it, and I wouldn‘t want to systematically undo it. In any case, applying BLP does not really depend on this, I just meant that it becomes even more important when an article is indexed. But of course it should always be rigorously implemented. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 23:27, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
I think the only reason it automarks as reviewed is to avoid other reviewers wasting time over it when at AfD. Perhaps that's a default that needs to be changed for BLPs for the reason that you mention. Espresso Addict (talk) 23:33, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

hello how do i write an article on my page? --Batseba Undari (talk) 12:24, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Batseba Undari, welcome to Wikipedia!
Creating an article from scratch is very difficult, and it may be a frustrating experience because you need to be familiar with a lot of different policies & guidelines on how to write appropriate content for Wikipedia. It‘s not usually recommended for new editors, but it‘s entirely allowed. Your first article provides guidance for new users on writing an article, including some of the more technical aspects. I suggest you read through that, as well as some of the policies it links to. I‘d be happy to help you with any questions.
There is a basic requirement for standalone article topics called notability. In most cases, that means that independent and reliable sources need to have published significant content on the subject.
Something else to be aware of is that it's generally not a good idea to create articles about yourself, your family or friends, or a company or organization that you work for or with. That's mainly because it's extremely difficult to write from a neutral point of view in such cases. You can read more about conflicts of interest here.
I know it can be discouraging to have all these guidelines thrown at you, but please don‘t let it dissuade you from editing here on Wikipedia. Meanwhile, it may be good to go around and improve existing articles to learn the ropes. If you see something wrong, don‘t worry too much about knowing all the guidelines; be bold and fix it! Happy editing! :) Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 14:12, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Soro333 (13:24, 24 October 2023)

How do I edit? --Soro333 (talk) 13:24, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Soro333, welcome to Wikipedia! You can edit almost every page on Wikipedia by clicking the "Edit" button. There are some policies and guidelines about content and editing practices; you'll learn those as you start editing. Generally speaking, if there's something you can do to improve Wikipedia, be bold and do it! If you mess up, anyone can easily fix any mistakes you might have made. However, I would recommend that you read about the most important principles of Wikipedia before you start editing: the five pillars. Another great resource to get started is The Wikipedia Adventure. You should also be aware that editors are discouraged from writing about themselves or topics that they have a connection to (like employers or friends), as that makes it very difficult to be neutral and fair. Last thing, I promise: Everything in Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable sources so that readers can verify it.
I know it can feel overwhelming to have all this information to read through, but don't be discouraged; you'll learn the ropes in no time, and the best way to do that is to just start improving articles in whatever way you can. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help you. You can reply to this message and I should get back to you quite quickly :) Happy editing! I am currently trying to create a page about this person: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Nicostratus_(Athenian_commander) . He is only mentioned by Thucydide's History of the Peloponnesian war, is it ok to create a page on him even though I only have 1 source?

Oh sorry, did not notice the description existed, wrote everything in the title. Soro333 (talk) 14:03, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

@Soro333 No worries about that!
In general, article subjects need to be notable; for biographies, the relevant guideline is WP:BASIC. To establish notability, you‘ll need at least two reliable sources that are independent of one another and of the subject; three good sources is a good general rule of thumb. I don‘t think that threshold is met here, so that article probably wouldn’t survive a deletion discussion.
Let me know if there‘s anything else I can help you with :) Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 07:59, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
So should I continue working on it or should I just give up since it will be deleted anyways? Soro333 (talk) 14:12, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
If you‘re sure that there are no other sources, it may be better to put your efforts into something else, if nothing else then to avoid a potentially very frustrating experience. My first-ever article was deleted, and even though it wasn‘t that long (or good), it just doesn‘t feel amazing. Hope that makes sense, and happy editing! :) Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 08:54, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

SOLAR ENERGY AND THE EARTH'S AXIS

The Earth rotates on its own axis once a day. The Earth's axis is an imaginary line that starts at the North Pole and ends at the South Pole. it is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degree celcius from the vertical and it maintains its tilt around the sun. The side of the Earth that is facing the sun experiences day time. The side of the Earth facing away from the sun experiences night time. The equator runs horizontally across the middle of the Earth at 90 degree celcius to the axis. The half of the Earth above the equator is the northern hemisphere. The other half of the Earth below the equator is the southern hemisphere. The tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn runs parallel to the equator. Tropic of cancer is in the north. Tropic of capricorn is in the south. Hlompho Moroka (talk) 08:16, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Britishroadshow (20:39, 27 October 2023)

I just made my first edits by adding more sources on the article. Another user immediately jumped in and removed everything i added.. --Britishroadshow (talk) 20:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Britishroadshow, welcome to Wikipedia! On what article did this happen? I‘d be happy to take a look. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 10:10, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
I simply was adding resources which Wikipedia was requesting and adding historical context. The article is Prince and Great Steward of Scotland
I did get title corrected as it was just Prince of Scotland.
Many of citations are hasty generalizations. Basically, there is no title Prince of Scotland under the British constitution. No record of the title on the Royal Family website, and according to this article Peerage of Scotland the highest Royal Rank is Duke in Scotland IE The Duke of Rothesay not a Title of Prince of Scotland.
DrKay has threatened to have me blocked and banned from commenting or creating any content. Britishroadshow (talk) 13:55, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from LeónGonsalvesofGoa (03:36, 2 November 2023)

Our previous discussion revolved around incorporating a summary of notable individuals from Goa into the Goa article. Upon reviewing the list article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Goa), I was taken aback by the numerous entries lacking references, and subsequently, I removed them all. If you run into any specific issues, I‘d be happy to help you. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 22:44, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Would you mind reversing your decision to allow for an admin closure? Based on the October 20, 2023 comments from the relister, it is clear that many of the keep votes have not supplied policy based reasoning to keep. Note that some of these accounts popped up just to vote in the discussion. Since that time, there were two additional keep votes, one who admits they are not well versed in WP:ORGCRIT and another who cited a reference that provides a mention of the topic which is not WP:CORPDEPTH. CNMall41 (talk) 06:57, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

I think it‘s quite a clear consensus. Note that when I closed the discussion, the only !vote to delete had been withdrawn; there was no support at all for deleting, and pretty broad support for keeping the article. Some of the !votes were unfortunately just votes, which don‘t carry a lot of weight. But quite a few editors expressed well-reasoned arguments, and I think there‘s more than enough substance in that discussion to read a consensus to keep. I‘d usually be happy to revert a non-admin close, and I understand that non-admins shouldn’t close contentious discussions. However, this is a really clear case, at least to my eyes. It’d be a real stretch to call it particularly contentious. If you‘re just gonna take it to DRV, I‘d rather revert and let an admin take a look (editor resources are precious etc.), so let me know if that‘s your intention. Still, I really don‘t see how this discussion could be read any other way. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 20:20, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. My request is not about consensus, but the use of non-admin closure. Based on the October 20, 2023 comment from a relisting admin (and subsequent votes which I detailed in my original comment above), this could fall under WP:BADNAC#2 ("outcome is a close call") which is why I am asking for the reversal to allow admin closure. While my intention for DRV should not impact your decision, I will say that I cannot make that determination prior to a close. I do not always agree with admin closures, but never go to DRV simply because I don't like it. Me taking an admin close to DRV would be based on the reasoning for their close and any discussion I have with the admin to understand their reasoning. Hopefully that brings some clarification. Cheers!--CNMall41 (talk) 22:00, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifyingy! I really struggle to see how this is a „close call“ at all. Could you elaborate on that? What possible outcome is there for this discussion in which all !votes are to Keep, other than closing it as a Keep? Would you close it as no consensus? I‘ve reverted my close because it seems that there is some fundamental disconnect between how I read the discussion and how you seem to interpret it; still, I would really like to hear what your thought process is to evaluate that discussion as a „close call.“ Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 22:39, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate the revert. Poor wording choice on my end. I would say that it is not an uncontroversial close. My understanding is that non-admin closures should be for articles that are clearly !keep. This one was not as there was back and forth, source analysis, and an admin commenting about wanting more thank simple "keep" votes without supporting the contention. So again, not arguing what the consensus would/could've been. My request is more about the use of non-admin closure. Thanks again. --CNMall41 (talk) 05:38, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Re: Closure of Felyne AfD

Hi, I'd like to request that you reopen the AfD about the Felyne article. In searching for more sources, I recently found this new source from USGamer that is pretty large WP:SIGCOV on the topic and wasn't previously mentioned. I think you can also agree it is really significant and merits that the AfD go on at least somewhat longer for people to be notified of this. This is also another decent source on the localization of felyne dialect. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 00:41, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi! If you’ve found new sources that change the situation, I would suggest you open a discussion on the redirect talk page; AfDs are not usually re-opened if the sourcing situation changes after they have been closed. You might want to ping the participants of that AfD to see if consensus changes given the additional sources. Make sure to ping everyone who participated, because making a selection might look like WP:CANVASS. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 07:39, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Anirudhkataria95, welcome to Wikipedia!
Because this is a religious place, I want to work forward to give it increased protection. --India2024 (talk) 04:43, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @India2024! Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your work on that article. Pages are protected in accordance with the protection policy. Wikipedia being an open encyclopedia (in so far as anyone can edit it) is a really important principle, and pages are almost never protected preemptively; see WP:PREEMPTIVE about that. In this case, there doesn't seem to be a need for protection, as the article has not suffered sustained attacks by vandals or similar issues.
In general, you can request that an admin change a page's protection level at WP:RFPP. However, as long as there is no demonstrated need for protection, usually in the form of sustained vandalism, the page probably will not be protected.
I hope this helps :) Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Happy editing! Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 13:10, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mega Wiki Editor on Cell to Singularity (00:13, 29 November 2023)

Hola, quería preguntar, ¿cómo se agregan imágenes y/o fotos a los sitios de Wikipedia?

Gracias. --Mega Wiki Editor (talk) 00:13, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Mega Wiki Editor, I don't speak Spanish myself, but I'll do my best with DeepL :)
Images used on Wikipedia need to meet certain copyright requirements and are usually hosted through Wikimedia Commons. You can read more about adding existing images to articles at WP:COMMONS. If you'd like to upload your own images, WP:UPI explains how to do that.
Let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'd be happy to help.

Question from Josephine Oboh (06:10, 30 November 2023)

Hello, Thanks for being my mentor. I will like to publish a new article on Wikipedia. What are the procedures to publish a new article? --Josephine Oboh (talk) 06:10, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Josephine Oboh, welcome to Wikipedia!
:) 12:01, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cvcs84 (01:33, 22 December 2023)

hi, happy to be in action. a QQ, how to paste a tabular column with the filters enabled? Is there any template for entering 4 column and 5 rows data? --Cvcs84 (talk) 01:33, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Cvcs84. I hope I‘m understanding your question correctly; I think you can do that by switching to the source editor and copying the source code directly. I‘m not aware of a good way to do this in the visual editor, but it‘s not my area of expertise to be honest. Hope this helps :) Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 14:07, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Actualcpscm,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Reminders:
