Hey Adam, I don't know what you're doing with these documents, but something I don't see covered here is the simultaneous inverse change in opinion in Europe vs. in the US vis à vis Israel and the Jews...while sympathy in Europe for the Jews and for Israel decreased markedly following the '67 war, with a simultaneous (and blind, in my opinion) skyrocketing increase in sympathy for the Palestinians, an entirely different phenomenon was taking place across the pond—public opinion in the US was generally apathetic wrt Israel prior to the '67 war—not only were the Zionists communists, but they were...<gasp!> Jews. In short, few people cared about Israel, political/cold war machinations aside. After the '67 war, attitudes in the US toward Israel in particular, and toward Jews in general, changed, it seemed, overnight. Since then, Europeans in general have held increasingly negative (or even antagonistic) views regarding Israel, and since 2000, and antisemitic-inspired vandalism, property destruction, assaults and murders have increased at an appalling rate, while American views have remained largely unchanged (the biggest changes seem to be a result of Hispanic immigration, rather than as a result of a paradigm shift in the general public's perception or viewpoint). I wrote this draft as a replacement for the current Holocaust article, which is horrible and beyond repair in my opinion. But I am not prepared to over-write the existing article without support from other editors with expertise in the area.
I'm not sure I agree with you about the course of public opinion in the US about Israel and Jews, but regardless of whether I agree or not, that is not really the subject of the article. Adam 02:36, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
