Microbial Fuel Cell[edit]

The Education section does not contribute any additional facts or findings on the article topic. Also, it is unnecessary to name Thomas Jefferson High School as one of the schools that uses microbial fuel cells in an educational setting because it can be seen as an attempt at self-publicity. The Education section should be taken out of the article.

The Biorecovery section is under-represented as it does not have sufficient coverage. There are only 2 sentences which are just rewording the titles of the articles cited. This section could be improved by describing how the recovery occurs, under what conditions the MFC works, how much energy was produced and how much substance was produced or recovered. For example the first sentence could be replaced by: MFCs are able to remove copper ions from wastewaters because energy provided by the oxidation of organic matter in the wastewater can be used to reduce the copper ions resulting in the solidification of copper. [1]

In addition, the hyperlink provided by footnote 34 does not lead to the right page, so the hyperlink should be replaced with https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00253-012-4456-7. Agatha Lo (talk) 07:08, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Acetobacterium[edit]

The topic Acetobacterium is notable because there are many peer-reviewed articles about chemicals that can be metabolized by Acetobacterium and features that are found in Acetobacterium woodii like ferredoxin[2]. The reference in the article is also a reliable source because it was published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology and thus it should have been peer-reviewed.

There are deficiencies in the article after the second sentence of the first paragraph. The article should point out the similarities and differences between A. woodii and other acetogens. For example: Other acetogens use the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway to reduce CO or CO2 and produce acetate, but what distinguishes A. woodii from other acetogens is that it conserves energy by creating a sodium gradient rather than a proton gradient. This means that A. woodii would need sodium in its environment in order to make ATP[3]. Also, putting the sentences in the second paragraph after the first sentence of the first paragraph and making the words “type genus” link to the Wiki page for type genus would make it easier for the reader to understand why information about A. woodii can be applied to the whole genus, Acetobacterium. In addition, I would remove “widely used to make vinegar” in the last sentence of the first paragraph because it is irrelevant to the bacteria being discussed.

To improve the article I would give an example of how Acetobacterium can be used and a brief summary of the conditions and materials needed by the bacterium to produce the intended product. For instance, I would say that A. woodii could be used as a catalyst in the transformation of tetrachloromethane to dichloromethane and carbon dioxide by reductive dechlorinations, but the reactions taken to get to the final product is unknown[4]. I would also give more background information about Acetobacterium in the first paragraph. For example, I would list some of the chemicals that can be metabolized by A. woodii (like CO[5] and 2,3-Butanediol[6]).

William Yip's Peer Review[edit]

Overall, Agatha Lo’s edited article is well written, clear, and touches upon relevant details on “Acetobacterium”. Lo contributes relevant current research by introducing metabolic capabilities followed by potential applications of Acetobacterium in a well structured manner. Lo explains the metabolic capabilities using easy comprehensible language, making it clear to the reader why Acetobacterium are useful candidates in environmental applications. This demonstrates a clear structure and flow of ideas. In general, Lo’s explanations are suitable, relevant, and easy to understand.

Lo’s content is well balanced and provides a neutral point of view by drawing different perspectives from a selection of notable scientific literatures. However, the third paragraph appears to rely solely on the work of Schiel-Bengelsdorf, Bettina and Dürre, Peter. Perhaps, additional citations can be added to this paragraph to prevent information bias. By reading the abstracts of Lo’s sources, it is appropriate to say her edited content is accurately presented.

The writing is easy to follow; however, certain areas can be more concise. For example, the first sentence of the third paragraph (“Other acetogens use the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway to reduce CO or CO2 and produce acetate…”) could be rewritten in a brief but comprehensive manner. Another suggestion would be removing the second paragraph by incorporating the first sentence (“The type species…”) into the first paragraph and removing the entire second sentence as Acetobacter a genus of acetic acid bacteria is already mentioned in the first paragraph and exemplifies redundancy.

All in all, Lo excelled in drawing appropriate information from different sources while maintaining a neutral tone and maintaining a logical structural integrity of the article.
