Teahouse talkback: you've got messages!

[edit]
Hello, Aguynamedcarl. Your question has been answered at the Teahouse Q&A board. Feel free to reply there!
Please note that all old questions are archived after 2-3 days of inactivity. Message added by Fiddle Faddle 22:35, 19 September 2014 (UTC). (You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{teahouse talkback}} template).[reply]

Hello!

[edit]

Hi! May I first congratulate you on your quick grasp of the Wikipedia rules. Wish that more "newbies" (that's what you are now) were like you. That being said, I don't have sufficient knowledge about all the legalese of COI, but some other editor will come along soon and answer your question at the Teahouse. I am however quite used to write about old buildings and historical sites, so if you need some help while editing, or want to ask something about things here at the Wikipedia, just ask at my talk page or "ping" me anywhere. Ping is how you notify other users. You do that by writing {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter:. Best, w.carter-Talk 22:37, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This may also help

[edit]

User:Timtrent/A good article has been said to be helpful by other editors. It will; never be complete guide, but it works as a starting point. WP:REFB and WP:CITE are good to read as well. Fiddle Faddle 09:28, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that's a great article. Carlaldrich (talk) 16:43, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you ever need to edit where you feel you may have a conflict of interest, or might be accused of having one, this template is useful, deployed at the head of the article's talk page, and ideally fully fleshed out with all the parameters. Deploying this one's self shows full acknowledgement that one realises that such an accusation might be levied and takes all the heat out of it, and before the event.

Other editors than one's self may also deploy the template, and this is also absolutely fine.

I applaud the statement on your user page. Fiddle Faddle 15:01, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'll keep this template in mind! Carlaldrich (talk) 16:36, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
hi, thanks for taking my twitter advice. there is a policy about WP:COIADVICE. the suggested procedure is to make proposed edits on the article talk page, or rough draft in your sandbox. now that we are collaborating, some wp:GLAM editor will be happy to incorporate. i would also encourage you to turn on Wikipedia:VisualEditor, (under your preferences > beta features) which is the wysiwyg editor, you may find it easier. Duckduckstop (talk) 19:16, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for helping me get started. I've had some academic background with Wikipedia (such as some of the many articles about reliability and such) but never any hands-on experience. I've played with the visual editor as well as learning the codes and such. If I make proposed changes either in Talk or a Sandbox, how do I get people to see it? Do they have to be following the article? Carlaldrich (talk) 16:36, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Duckduckstop: Aha! So it's you we have to thank for bringing this excellent newbie to us. I was wondering who the "recruiter" was. From what I've seen at User:Carlaldrich and User:Carlaldrich/sandbox (yes, I have been snooping around) he is one very fine editor-in-the-making and he's doing just as great with the editing as with the WP policy. And Carlaldrich, your actions have made you noted here even before you've started! Keep up the good work, both of you. Best, w.carter-Talk 19:45, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm glad to be noticed! Carlaldrich (talk) 16:36, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some stroopwafels for you!

2019 US Banknote Contest

[edit]
US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
