It is very unlikely that the Playstation "4" will lack an optical disc drive (The article incorrectly stated it will lack a disk drive which implies it will lack an HDD. When referring to ODD the correct spelling is disc with C not K) as this would prevent people without internet access to utilise the console. Currently only 21.1% of the world population have Internet access. Sony would narrow their marked for the PS"4" considerably if they were to take that route. One must also remember that Sony have invested a considerable amount of money in the Blu-Ray Market It will be unlikely that Sony will drop Blu-Ray support for its next Console. There are no SDK available for the next Sony Console as the Unit is still in the early development stage so there are no Titles in development. The release date of 2018 is unlikely as Microsoft & Nintendo will likely have their next generation Consoles out by 2012 latest. The market for the Playstation could not survive for 6 years on last generation hardware. As for backwards compatibility Judging by Sony's decision to drop backwards compatibility with the current production Playstation 3 models makes it unlikely they will enable backwards compatibility on the next generation console unless they choose to go the same route as Microsoft with the original Xbox content download through live on the Xbox 360. Even so enabling hardware based backwards compatibility will be cost ineffective especially when considering the PS3 Specifications & architecture. Hardware emulation also has proven to be unpopular & problematic since the later 60GB version of the PS3 was emulating part of the PS2 hardware which resulted in a considerable performance drop of Playstation 1 & 2 games. the amount of controllers the next Playstation will support is pure speculation too. The article on the Playstation 4 is very unprofessional & terribly flawed. I assume the writer confusing & misleading the public.
