Monomer

You might be confused about terminology. Here is a general polymerization reaction:

n(monomer) → (monomer)n ≡ polymer

In most cases, the polymer has the same empirical formula as the monomer, with the exception of end groups, which become negligible at high degrees of polymerization. An example:

n(C2H4) → polyethylene

C:H ratio identical before and after

Dimethyldichlorosilane is perhaps the key precursor to organosilicon materials. It does not however polymerize. Therefore, for most chemists, dimethyldichlorosilane is not a monomer. It gives various polymers by dehalogenation or by hydrolysis:

n Me2SiCl2 + 2n Na → (Me2Si)n (polydimethylsilane) + 2n NaCl
n Me2SiCl2 + 2n H2O → (Me2SOi)n (polydimethylsiloxane, or "pdms") + 2n HCl

Those are the reasons that I removed the mention of monomers today. Happy editing.--Smokefoot (talk) 17:17, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

@Smokefoot: Hi. I'm currently reading a book from 1981 on organic silicon polymers synthesis that lists dimethyldichlorosilane as a monomer. I admit and observe that this terminology may not be completely appropriate in this case. Thanks for thorough explanation. I think my edits were preliminary. Best. As I mentioned above, some use the term monomer loosely. An organoSi expert might do it because the only reason that they make Me2SiCl2 is as a precursor to polymers. Terephthalic acid is referred to as a monomer to polyethylene terephthalate. In fact the Category:Monomers lists many species that are not monomers, using my advice. The case of Me2SiCl2 seems extreme since half of its weight is discarded in the conversion to polymer. If you check [[1]], IUPAC is ambiguous.--Smokefoot (talk) 20:56, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
@Smokefoot: I tend to agree with you on MeSi2Cl2. Loosing chlorine molecules makes this compound a precursor, not a monomer. Hardly we should stick to the definition of the monomer in this case despite sources claiming this. I tend to think that my book is a bit outdated in this sense. We will have to look for other sources. AXONOV (talk) 06:34, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Typo

Please note that an extra "n" appears accidentally in the word "innocently" and turns it into "innoncently" in your comment on your user page about Putin's criminal invasion of Ukraine (and speaking of Putin, I hope that you are and remain safe from him and his regime!) @UrielAcosta: Hi! Thanks. Nothing has ended so I hope so too. Cheers! AXONOV (talk) 14:00, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Anon has issues?

109.144.210.37 (talk · contribs · count) reverted a few of your edits leaving nonsensical edit summaries such as "adding text riddled with grammar and spelling errors does not benefit Wikipedia". Does this happen often? Cheers Adakiko (talk) 09:41, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

@Adakiko: Yup. See WP:BKFIP. It's probably him. He is constantly using "grammar" "issues" as an excuse. AXONOV (talk) 20:32, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
