- Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
- Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
- In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
- Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
- Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like
<ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>
, copy the whole thing). - In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
- If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:

Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello AlphaBetaGamaDelta! Your additions to Subliminal stimuli have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. /wiae /tlk 23:32, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Empathy into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. /wiae /tlk 13:23, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
Ethnicelebs.com as a reference
[edit]Hi AlphaBetaGamaDelta. I noticed that you used ethnicelebs.com as a reference for biographical information in Sophia Loren. Please note that the general consensus as expressed at WP:RSN is that it does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. I've gone ahead and removed it. If you disagree, let's discuss it. You may want to check WP:RSP and WP:RSN to help determine if a source is reliable. Thanks.--Hipal (talk) 01:31, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Your edit to Veganism has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for information on how to contribute your work appropriately. For legal reasons, Wikipedia strictly cannot host copyrighted text or images from print media or digital platforms without an appropriate and verifiable license. Contributions infringing on copyright will be removed. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 18:42, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Veganism. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Points to note:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Bon courage (talk) 14:32, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Request reason:
I've made the mistake of copying a text from another source into Wikipedia, but I understood and I have corrected it and I rewrote the text with my own words. I've found other cases where people copied small parts of a text into articles, I didn't know it was violating any rule. Now I know, I will not do it again. Decline reason:
On 5 January 2023, a message was left on your talk page (above) that explains copyright policy in details. You continued to add copyrighted content to Wikipedia months after that. You were even WP:edit warring to add it. Thus, your claim that you "made a mistake" can not be accepted. Vanjagenije (talk) 09:47, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- I'm certainly willing to consider an unblock, and any admin that feels ABGD has demonstrated sufficient understanding of (a) what they did wrong and (b) how to respect copyright moving forward should feel free to accept the unblock with my assumed blessing. That said, ABGD, I don't think this unblock request cuts it. Have you read or re-read WP:COPYVIO, which you hopefully reviewed after the prior warnings? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:19, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't view nor review WP:COPYVIO until now, but it simply confirmed what had already been told to me. I appologize for any inconvenient. Why my unblock request does not cut it? As I wrote, I did not readd the same text, I have corrected the added text using a text with my own words. I am being blocked after the fact and after I corrected my mistake. AlphaBetaGamaDelta (talk) 15:25, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Did you see the segment in the introduction that says
"Even inserting text copied with some changes can be a copyright violation if there is substantial linguistic similarity in creative language or sentence structure; this is known as close paraphrasing, which can also raise concerns about plagiarism."
? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:51, 16 September 2024 (UTC)- I did now, but I can rephrase the lines better, except for the names of the illnesses that cannot be written in another way. In a small text it is hard to rewrite with our own words without merely paraphrasing. AlphaBetaGamaDelta (talk) 15:54, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

- If this editor is to unblocked they probably also need to show some understanding that WP:MEDRS sources are required for WP:Biomedical information, and that edit warring to the contrary with edit summaries like "Reverted vandalism by a clear vegan who can't handle the truth" is not acceptable. Smells like a POV warrior. Bon courage (talk) 17:09, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- The source I used is a website of the American Government, which the above user called a "junk page". I did not know it was not considered to be reliable under Wikipedia chriteria, specially since I've found articles from it in some Wikipedia pages. Nevertheless, the fact that the source is not accepted doesn't mean that, like the user above did, it has to be obliterated from the history of the article, making it impossible both to retrieve and rewrite the text that violates the copyright or to find the title and authors of the article in order to find it elsewhere rather than in that search engine. He's the one who is a POV warrior. AlphaBetaGamaDelta (talk) 13:50, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Firefangledfeathers: I don't know much about this case. Can you show me some wp:diffs of copyright violations? It is not so obvious to me. Vanjagenije (talk) 16:59, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Will have time to pull the diffs together in about 12 hours, V. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:41, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
