Listing of some of you images on Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images[edit]

Image deletion warning Several images uploaded by you, including Image:Elamite worshipper.jpg, have been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. If the images' copyright status cannot be verified, they may be deleted. If you have any information on the source or licensing of these images, please provide the necessary information.

Removing {{unverifiedimage}} tags[edit]

Please do not removed {{unverifiedimage}} tags from the pages. They are there according to the Wikipedia policies at WP:PUI. You have been told about the listing of some of the images you have uploaded on that page at least 15 days ago, and you had not answered the claims, so the images proceeded to Phase II, which requires putting {{unverifiedimage}} tags everywhere the images are used. If you have any reason why these images should be considered "free" according to Wikipedia policies, please mention so and your reasoning on the WP:PUI page. When the problem is resolved, we can remove those tags. (BTW, I have also answered your comments on my talk page. Go there to read them). Thank you very much, roozbeh 13:15, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Removing {{PUIdisputed}} tags[edit]

As mentioned in the text of the {{PUIdisputed}} tags themselves, please do not remove the tags until the issue is resolved on the Wikipedia:Possibly Unfree Images. In case you have reasons that the images are really {{fairuse}} (contrary to your previous claim that they were {{attribution}}), please provide them on Wikipedia:Possibly Unfree Images. I have put the tags back. Thank you very much, roozbeh 18:18, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for mentioning some of your sources[edit]

Thank you very much for your help. I am confirming your sources and changing the tags as appropriate. Thanks again, roozbeh 19:32, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

I have now verified five of your uploaded images, Image:Sassanian silver plate.jpg, Image:Sassanian silver vessels.jpg, Image:Sassanian king.jpg, Image:Derafsh.gif, and Image:13 achaemenid gold earing.jpg. I completed their image page to mention their exact license status, and removed the {{unverifiedimage}} tags from the pages that used them. I am checking your other sources now. roozbeh 20:53, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Licenses I can't verify[edit]

Dear Amir85, I checked the sources for three of the other images you have uploaded, Image:E3 5 4a sassanian.jpg, Image:Parthian art 1.jpg, and Image:07b.jpg. The first two come from the State Hermitage Museum website and the last comes from Asianart.com. You have said that "usage allowed with mention of the refernce site". But I cannot find that anywhere on those two websites:

  • The first website has a page at http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/html_En/00/hm0_7.html that says: "The contents of this site may not be reproduced, in whole or in part, in any form without the written permission of the State Hermitage Museum."
  • The second website does not mention anything about usage being allowed with mention of the reference site. It only says "all text and images © John Eskenazi Ltd." [1].

If you know any page on those websites that allows such usage (mentioning only the reference site), or you have any other reason that this is the case, would you please tell us?

Thanks again, roozbeh 21:13, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Image:07b.jpg Image:E3 5 4a sassanian.jpg, Image:Parthian art 1.jpg http://www.asianart.com/index.html i've contacted their respected reference source for permission before uploading but to no answer or avail. So as a common trend for gallery or museum images its been used solely non-commercially with mention of its reference source which doesnt violate their policies. --Amir85
Please note that the Wikipedia license is commercial, not non-commercial. So this violates their copyright. For more information, please see GFDL#Materials for which commercial redistribution is prohibited (Wikipedia is GFDL-licensed). I have put your claim on the WP:PUI page, to see if other Wikipedians confirm your claim. If no one agrees to your claim, the images will need to be deleted, unfortunately. roozbeh 21:40, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

Sources I can't verify[edit]

Dear Amir85, I tried to verify the source for the other image you had mentioned the source, Image:Map sassanid empire.jpg. You have mentioned: "Source for Image:Map sassanid empire.jpg (members.aol.com/ahreemanx/page77.html) friend of mine in US." Unfortunately, it seems that I cannot visit the URL you mentioned, http://members.aol.com/ahreemanx/page77.html does not work. Would you please check to see if you can find the correct URL? Thanks, roozbeh 21:26, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

  • Image:Map sassanid empire.jpg the source http://members.aol.com/ahreemanx/page77.html is correct. He is out for sometime but before getting the photo he assured me about its copyright status so Im liable to use it. --Amir85
    • I put this claim of yours on the WP:PUI page. We will still need to verify your claim, and for that, as I wrote there, "we need the name of the copyright holder, a contact address, the date is was first prepared or published, and the exact license by the copyright holder". Is your friend the creator of this image himself? If yes, would you please provide the information and the text of his permission and limitations he has specified for the images (like only for non-commercial purposes, mentioning him as the source, etc.)? If he is not the creator of the work, we need to know his source for the image. roozbeh 21:35, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

Remaining images[edit]

OK, you have now provided sources for nine of the images you have uploaded. There are problems (as mentioned above, like a URL not working) that we would appreciate if you could help us in resolving them. But we still need the sources for some of the other disputed pages you have uploaded. You can either mention them at the WP:PUI page (or my own talk page, so I can help you in resolving the issues, if you wish). For your record, these are the images that you have not yet mentioned any source for:

Please provided sources and licenses for these, if you know them. The {{PUIdisputed}} and {{unverified}} tags will be removed from the pages as soon as the sources and their licensing could be verified. Thanks a lot, roozbeh 21:48, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Image:Naqshe rostam.jpg has been verified why again you unverified it ? and hurry in verification of other images. --Amir85

Stop playing games in sassanid army , first of all I have their permission to use their materials and secondly it is not a copy of original. --Amir85

  • Dear Amir85, unfortunately, no commercial use permission is not enough for text in the Wikipedia. They have been OK for images only (only if they have been uploaded before May 19, 2005). If you want to ask for someone's permission to use their copyrighted text, they must agree to license the text under GNU Free Documentation License or a compatible license. no commercial use is no compatible with the GFDL. If you wish to ask them to license their work under the GFDL, there is a page on the Wikipedia which can help you in writing them. The page is at Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission. • Show me the possible copyright violation in the article mr handsome . --Amir85
      • Comparing your first version [2] with the original article [3], I give these random samples:
        1. Original article:: "The heavy cavalry of Shapur II is described by an eye-witness historian as follows: " Your version: "The Clibinarii cavalry of Shapur II is described by an eye-witness historian as follows:"
        2. Original article: "According to the Iranian sources mentioned above, the martial equipments of a heavily-armed Sassanian horseman were as follows: helmet, hauberk (Pahlavi griwban), breastplate, mail, gauntlet (Pahlavi abdast), girdle, thigh-guards (Pahlavi ran-ban), lance, sword, battle-axe, mace, bowcase with two bows and two bowstrings, quiver with 30 arrows, two extra bowstrings, spear, and horse armour (zen-abzar); to these some have added a lasso (kamand), or a sling with slingstones.". Your version: "According to Iranian sources martial equipments of a heavily-armed Sassanid horseman were : helmet, hauberk (Pahlavi griwban), breastplate, mail, gauntlet (Pahlavi abdast), girdle, thigh-guards (Pahlavi ran-ban), lance, sword, battle-axe, mace, bowcase with two bows and two bowstrings, quiver with 30 arrows, two extra bowstrings, spear, and horse armour (zen-abzar); to these some have added a lasso (kamand), or a sling with slingstones."
        3. Original article: "Unlike the Parthians, however, the Iranians organised an efficient siege machine for reducing enemy forts and walled towns." Your version: "In siege warfare, Sassanids (unlike the Parthians) organised an efficient siege train for reducing enemy forts and walled towns."
      • Also, the general structure of the article is the same (or very similiar). So, your work will count as a derivative work, and is a copyright violation. roozbeh 21:30, September 3, 2005 (UTC)
        • I removed those debated parts from article now what ? --Amir85
          • There are still other parts copied, as you know. The three examples above were just examples. If you want to write an article about the Sassanid army that doesn't violate copyright, my best advice is deleting all you have written until now about it, and starting writing them again from an empty page, without looking at the Iran Chamber article or any other. That will make sure you have written it yourself, with only the information you have learned from the Iran Chamber article, not with copyrighted text or structure. roozbeh 22:21, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

Request for Adminship[edit]

Hi Amir. I have removed your request from RfA as the form you created had remained blank for several hours. If you wish to proceed with your request simply re-add your nomination and answer the questions provided. However, I would strongly suggest that you reconsider your application as it has almost no chance of succeeding and the process can be very rough. Generally speaking, all successful candidates for adminship have over 1000 edits, or are very close to this figure, you fall somewhat short of this. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Rje 01:06, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

Making Complaints[edit]

If you wish to make a complaint about the behaviour of an admin, or any user for that matter, the place to do so is at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User conduct. The instructions are on the page. The process is usually very fair, but it can be a little slow. Hope this helps. Rje 12:33, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Stone sold.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stone sold.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --Secretlondon 21:28, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Battles of the Sassanid Empire[edit]

I've taken the liberty of moving the battles to Category:Battles of the Sassanid Empire, since convention is to capitalize "Empire" in such category names. If you have some free time, you may want to take a look at Category:Battles of Persia, into which some of them had been previously filed, to see if any battles need their categories fixed. Battles of Persia[edit]

I've changed the nesting of Category:Battles of Persia to be a super-category for the various dynasties and states (similar to Category:Battles of Ancient Greece or Category:Battles of Rome); I hope you don't mind.

Since you seem to know a lot about this topic, perhaps you could clarify a few things I'm not sure about. Should Category:Battles of the Ghaznavid Empire go under Category:Battles of Persia as well? Also, do we need a Category:Battles of the Achaemenid Empire to contain battles fought during the Greco-Persian Wars?

I'd appreciate some guidance on these questions, since I'm not really an expert on the history of the region. Thanks in advance! Kirill Lokshin 02:17, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Complaints re copyvios[edit]

As I recall, it was Sponsianus who was complaining that he had written an article for Iranchamber, which you had plagiarized. But the record was on your talk page, and has apparently been deleted.

I'm not sure that I believe you when you say you settled it amicably with Sponsianus. There is no evidence for that. Zora

As for the copyvio question -- just look at your talk page now.

Whenever I google for text that you've written, I find the original on the web, at one site or another. QED. Zora 11:45, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, it's just one person who complained directly about plagiarism, not several.
One is just as bad as several. So is plagiarism even when there's no complaint by the person or site which has been plagiarized. Zora 11:58, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Kasidiya[edit]

Amir, I checked on this article and found that it was a copyvio. I put up the notice -- and immediately afterwards, a new editor who wrote his MA thesis on the battle put up a new version of the article. Usually we're supposed to wait a week before taking down the copyvio and putting the temp page in place. Are you going to challenge the copyvio findings, or would you allow the new version to be put in place immediately? Zora 02:04, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Salam agha Amir85.

My name is Aytakin and I have seen the great contributions you have made to articles about of Iran, spicifically on history of Iran and that is why I am contacting you today. I am wroking on a website (http://www.iranclub.ca] about Iran which will have everything from editorials and deep information on history to current soccer scores and live TV and our own 24/7 radio! I am also working on a wiki[5] for information on everything relating to Iran. I am very much in need of some extra people to help me on this project. If you are intrested please reply, Thank you. --(Aytakin) | Talk 17:24, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Funny[edit]

Be cool, dude.--Zereshk 19:44, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'll have to cut down my time on WP. But I'll be here alright. Just for the sake for protecting the pages we've worked on from vandalists. Not only me, but SC is also here too. But he's watching the pages for the appropriate time to jump in. Did you see the timeline template I made for the History of Iran page? One way of improving our pages is to see what other country pages have done, and import their ideas on the Iran pages.--Zereshk 17:40, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, Time. That great thief. Regarding the shortage in sources, I also understand. I had a friend (from Zanjan) who studied in India for a while. He hated it. He finished his Masters there and went to Canada for his PhD. I guess that youll only have to rely on web sources for now. But we do have a lot of good stuff on the web. But it'll take a lot of digging, especially if it's farsi. Ive been using this page to gather info for the history pages lately. --Zereshk 04:30, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Farsi sources should be OK for English articles, shouldn't they?

Iran Website...[edit]

Merci, I contacted you because I saw all the effort you put in into Iranian topics. The main reason for the Wiki that I'm creating is to have a huge Iranian Information Database for Iranians who might have any questions. The website will include many things such as, our own live 24/7 radio, Iranian TV programs, forums, music, downloads, etc... You ask how you can help, I would appreatiate any help on any section of it. If you want to add information to the Wiki or if you are very stong in a prticular subject about Iran and would like to write articles or want to keep up the sport section, its up to you. The website is not complete yet, because first I want to get some people who are intrested in working on it and than we will get started. But until then I would appreatiate any help I can get on the wiki. Thanks, khodahafez --(Aytakin) | Talk 23:19, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Achaemenids/Sassanids[edit]

Amir khan, khayli mamnoon. I have plenty of source material regarding the Sassanids, Achaemenids, and ancient Persia in general, but I have to clean up and expand a number of articles first before I can get to that. So probably in about a week or two I'll have enough time to help there. Also, at some point we have to expand the Persian/Zoroastrian mythology articles - big time. I noticed your work there, and you're doing a great job so far. Soon I'll be able to concentrate my efforts there as well. Khoda negahdar, SouthernComfort 19:20, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Article[edit]

Hey, I thought about it and I looked at some of the pages which I thought were good enough to be a featured article cantidate, but they each have their flaws: Iran - It is very messy and it was previously nominated and in its talk page there are the reason why it didn't make it. Tehran - It has a lot of information and it just need to be cleaned up a bit. Persian Empire - Some citations need to be fixed, but other than that I think this is one of our strongest chances in having a featured article.

I think we should fix the Persian Empire article and go with that, what do you think? --(Aytakin) | Talk 20:17, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited two of Amir's articles; I think he's done a great job. If you would like some assistance with any of the proposed clean-up, please let me know how you wish me to help. Informative articles about Iran are especially important these days. Rklawton 20:55, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Amir.

I think User:wikiacc has been working on trying to get the main page of Iran become a featured article. Some people are also doing the same for Iran-Iraq war. But I havent been active in that area lately. What has been occupying my time recently is just merely trying to defend and stop some malicious users from destroying some important Iranian articles.--Zereshk 22:04, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again![edit]

Hi Amir, I am from Delhi, but right now studying in the US. DCE is a good college, but I'm curious what made you choose it :) Regards, deeptrivia (talk) 00:50, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The sections that I think need particular attention are:

  1. "Conflicts" is largely redundant, since the subject matter is already covered in "History"
  2. "History" is confusingly laid out. Topics are discussed in incorrect chronological subsections (the first paragraph of "First Golden Era," for example, belongs in "Early History.") Stacking of subsections is sometimes illogical--for instance, "Khosrau I's reforms" should be a subsection of "Second Golden Era," not a parallel section. "Khosrau I's reforms", by the way, also needs to be expanded.
  3. "History" also has issues with quality of writing. The prose is at best uninspiring, and at worst baffling and tedious. This problem crops up in other sections, but is probably at its worst in this one. The entire article, however, is in need of a copyedit. I have done some work, but I am not a terribly strong copyeditor.
  4. "Important Persian figures..." should either be converted to prose or removed. The second half of "Sassanid army" also needs to be converted from list to prose form. In general, lists are not good, although I do like the timeline at the end.

There are more issues, but these would be good ones to start with. I may take a crack at addressing some of them myself, since I think I'm starting to get a better feel for the structure of the article.

Feel free to strike these comments out as you go, or to them to wherever you find most convenient. RobthTalk 21:37, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Right now Im busy fending off a Kurdish attack on the page Iranian peoples. Theyre trying to erase it. The page Iranian kurdistan was locked after an edit war as well. I'm sick of these editors on an agenda.--Zereshk 20:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-When I meant nationals, I meant a person who is a citizen of another country. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I hope there are no hard feelings. -User: Afghan Historian

Persians[edit]

The user Aucaman has been vandalizing Persian people, as well as several other Iran-related articles, claiming that "modern Persians are mix of Arabs and Mongols" editing the article, or adding a dispute tag, based on his own personal assumptions and conclusions without any valid source to support such outrageous revisionist theory. If you have an opinion on this topic, please join the Talk:Persian_people, so we can reach a consensus for the removal of the "dispute tag". --ManiF 18:16, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV[edit]

My point of view is that I want the article to remain the same but Aucaman intends to change this paragraph:

"The Persians of Iran are descended from the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranians, an Indo-European people that migrated to the region during the 2nd millennium BC, as well as indigenous populations such as the Elamites."

to this paragraph:

"The modern Persians are an amalgamation of a wide variety of peoples including the Elamites and the subsequent Iranian, Turkic , Mongol, and Arab invaders."

When I asked him to substantiate his theory of what modern Persians are, he just kept bullying his POV by adding a dispute tag without any valid source to support such outrageous revisionist theory.

Hey man, Listen I think the move to set the two guys aside and trying to deal with this problem was the right move, smart move! If I can help deal with any of the talks, you know where to find me. --(Aytakin) | Talk 19:34, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Regarding your edit here. You're not supposed to remove dispute tags placed by other users (especially without explanation). See WP:Vandalism. Hello. Before making potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Otherwise, people might consider your edits to be vandalism. Thank you. The Aryan thing[edit]

We need to do something about this. But I am not sure what. The aryan theory is so widedly believed in Iran, its almost like common-sense to me. That a side, lots of articles are under attack.. --Kash 09:18, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

al-Khwarizmi in Persian[edit]

Hi, from what source did you get his Persian name? Could you also transliterite is back for me as it appears to be too long for his full name, but too short for his las name. Cheers, —Ruud 11:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iranian Watchdog[edit]

Aucaman and a few others like Heja Helweda and Diyako have been repeatedly and systematically vandalizing the Iran-related topics such as Persian people and Iranian peoples, propagating false information, maliciously editing/disputing/deleting without one shred of proof to backup their wild claims, applying the strawman falsification approach, trying to establish new 'facts" based on their own personal assumptions and beliefs.

In order to prevent this situation, we need to create an Iranian Watchdog on Wikipedia and guard the integrity and quality of all the Wikipedia articles that are related to Iran and Iranians. Please let me know if you think that's a good idea. --ManiF 12:59, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for someone who speaks Farsi well.[edit]

Hey there, I'm an Arabic speaker and student of Arabic Literature. As I am sure you are well aware, people often confuse words between the two languages and I am curious for the purposes of the article: Ghoul whether or not the word ghoul appears in Persian as gul/غول I am entirely certain the word is originally Arabic, because of it's relation to a specific root word. However since the word appears in Arabian Nights (Which has significant Persian influence) it would be remiss of me not to look into the Persian word for ghoul, though I suspect it is the same. So please leave a message on my talk page if you can help. Motashakkeram Angrynight 03:05, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Motashakkeram yet again, your advise has proven both invaluable and frustrating. Since Pahlavi script originates from Aramaic, and since the word seems to have been in the Arabic lexicon for some time (I say this due to its structure and use) I suspect it may well originate as far back as Aramaic and is shared by both languages. Much like the word "mirror" which seems to have insanely ancient roots, this word is old as hell. This of course entails yet more research, but it is enlightening in a way. Thank you for setting me off in a direction, I had a life before wikipedia *sigh*. Angrynight 21:59, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
