Seeking wisdom  ;)

Hello my name is Elias, I'm Lebanese and I have been editing here a while now, it happened that I saw and clicked that "create account" link once and since then i'm stuck, i have been doing some editing by trial and error and the first few weeks were really disorienting and "weird".. I had major misses but my greatest "Achievement" so far is my cherished GA i worked on for so long... yet... i feel i lack a lot of knowledge and i need a veterans help. AS to why i chose you... it was your username and the "taboo" related to it. I feel WP is a place for peace and understanding, and i'm looking forward to benefit from your advice... if you are available

Main interests: Levantine history and culture. Main weaknesses: MOS, citing, copyright... the list is long. cheers Eli+ 18:47, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

I'll gladly help you with anything.
Feel free to ask for any advice. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:16, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you for fixing grammar at my user page:) Best regards from Lithuania, Hugo.arg (talk) 06:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Adopt me

I see that you are adopting i wondered if you would want to adopt me? Christopher140691 (talk) 11:57, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi,
You asked me to adopt you. I can do that.
One piece of advice that i can already give you: Discussions on talk pages should remain together. It makes reading them easier. Now i reply here to make sure you see this reply, but usually a conversation should be held on the same talk page where it started.
Feel free to ask me for more help. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:28, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
ok thanks, sorry i didnt realsise thats what happened, so how do you go about asking me if i wish to accept your adoption on my talkpage? i know that there is some code that you need to put in. i wonder if you could do this for me because i dont have a clue how to do it. Christopher140691 (talk) 13:32, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
I did it. Take a look at you user page. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:35, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Looking forward to many happy chats with my new adopter. Any advice on how I can improve and get my edit count up so I can get the AWB that I have seen people using the the RC. Christopher140691 (talk) 13:38, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
If you don't know how to get your edit count up, you probably don't need to use AWB :)
You can try Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, that's both simple and useful. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:41, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for that I will have a look and hopefully be able to get my edit count up. Your helping already. What a great adoption. Christopher140691 (talk) 13:45, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Admin help

Do you think that you can help me understand what I should do to become an administrator? I have already started following the advice of Useight, but I would like to have a second opinion on the matter. Please read over User:Razorflame/Admin Coaching first and I would really appreciate if you would tell me if anything posted to that page is either incorrect or differs from your opinions. Thanks in advance, Razorflame 18:06, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I've already been reverting vandalism (check my contributions, just got done with a massive 300 edit reversion process), and I've been marking articles for deletion with {{db-reason}} and the appropriate letter-number combination for the deletion rule that it applies to because it is the closest to the deletion template on the Simple English Wikipedia, which is where I edit the most. During this string of vandalism reversions, I reported at least 3 or 4 IP's for persistant vandalism, and I've been participating in AfD's, RfA's, and MfD's among other things. I've even joined a few WikiProjects. I will continue to do what I've been doing for the past few days over the next few months, and hopefully, I will be ready for an RfA in a few months. Cheers, Razorflame 04:29, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks, the block was released. I'm on a shared IP right now, so these things are bound to happen.

Is there a Resilience Barnstar? I really need to give one to two people I've welcomed (one you recently adopted). Chubbennaitor 16:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Adoption Request

I would like to be adopted. :).Xp54321 (talk) 23:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Gladly. Consider yourself adopted. Feel free to ask me anything.
I made a few minor corrections on your user page - feel free to revert it if you don't like it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:12, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Block 'em!

The IP Address 69.243.33.106 has been vandalising a certain page (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints‎) many times. I kept reverting, but they have vandalised on the page more than once. I didn't know who to tell, so I chose a random admin. --Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Fan (talk) 02:08, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I just woke up. We are in very different timezones :)
This IP has already been blocked. Next time you can report persistent vandalism here: Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. (Shortcut: WP:AIV.)
Also, to link to an IP address of an anonymous vandal, you should to write it like this: {{vandal|69.243.33.106}}, which produces this output:
69.243.33.106 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 05:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

The Benji Hillman Foundation

Dear Amir -

I have added information about the Benji Hillman Foundation to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benji_Hillman

I am unsure how to work the internal formating , but would like to have the information about the Foundation and then keep the information about Major Hillman at the bottom.

Please could you help me with the formatting.

Thank you in advance.

Adopt Me!

You have said you are ready to adopt. I am currently seeking adoption, and wondering whether you would be interested? I Know you have said you will answer here, and I have added this page to my watchlist, but please leave a message on my talk page as I will most likely forget. Thanks. Gladly.
Feel free to ask me for any assistance. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 03:46, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I notice you changed my reference to her mother as Belarusian ("White Russian"). I understand that modern Belarusians might not like the term "White Russian", but that was how she self-described herself at that time. Can you point me towards a policy on this, or does your change simply reflect your personal view? Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:37, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that there is a policy. I usually remove reference to "White Russia", "White Russian" etc., because i consider them redundant, but if an author of any article thinks that it should be there, i don't argue. If you think that it fits in the article, feel free to restore it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:40, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Novy Mir

Hi Amir, Hope you'll see this...I rewrote the article about Novy Mir in an attempt to show the link between the NY and the Moscow versions of it. Also did a bit of a clean-up (the article badly needed it). --Badvibes101 (talk) 11:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

New user looking for advice

Hi Amir,

I am a new user. Registration was tricky because somebody banned the IP of my ISP.

I would like to add a paragraph to the current Windows Vista article, some information that I feel is important enough to be shared. Most of this information is from a Sound on Sound article and I need some advice on how to insert this. I have sporadically put some articles in everything2 and also worked on ProductWiki, both of which are a lot easier to use than Wikipedia - oh a new learning curve ;)

Especially I need some advice on how much of the information I need to cite / reference - it is probably not enough to just refer to the one SOS article (don't even know whether this is online, but I have the paper version of this) or should I do more research to have this from different sources? I usually do a lot of my research on Google Groups as a starting point and then follow links once I find information that I think is of value.

I have used my real name for my user profile, don't know (yet) whether this was a good move or not - any thoughts on this?

Apart from this I don't think I will have much time for high volume contribution, more interested in quality and obvious missing points in existing articles.

Where can I try out a new article / is there a user specific sandbox (can not really find this on my pages) to pre-write the paragraph I want to add so you can have a look at it?

If I am creating screenshots of software am I the owner or the author of the software?

I also found it hard to generate a profile page (MySpace and facebook again are a lot easier for this, just find it hard to start on a completely blank page). Maybe I should just link to my facebook site?

Finally, I find the prospect of learning WikiSyntax a bit daunting, what are the main 5 tags I need to know? (I like structuring articles using different headline levels)

Axel Grude (talk) 12:07, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Any citation that you add is good. You can hardly add too many citations.
I am not familiar with Sound on Sound, but i see that this website has been used as a source is other articles, so it's probably OK. If you have the paper version of it, it is OK too. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for an explanation of how to add sources; it has specific advice on citing journals. See Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Reliable sources for what sources to cite - the types of sources which are considered acceptable. As i said, Sound on Sound is probably good, but Everything2, for example, would not be a reliable source, as it is too open and hardly peer-reviewed. (Which doesn't mean that it's a bad website - i added some content to it under the name treeTop.)
If you ask me, Wikipedia is the easiest wiki software there is, but it's a matter of taste. If you run into any problems with wiki markup, feel free to ask me for help. If your intentions are good, but you screw something up with the syntax, don't worry - it happens to everyone and it's a positive part of the learning curve :)
Real name is OK, i use it. Whatever is good for you, as long as you contribute verifiable information.
You can create a sub-page as a sandbox. Just enter this into the searchbox: "User:Axel Grude/Sandbox" and then click "Start the User:Axel Grude/Sandbox page". You can write whatever you want there for training.
MySpace and Facebook are too limited in comparison to Wikipedia: here you can write anything about yourself - or even nothing! It's OK to link to your Facebook profile, too.
The headlines are done using ==, ===, ==== etc. Just open the source of any article and you'll see it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:24, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Compliment: category deletion at Klingon Language Institute

Good call paring down the categories at Klingon Language Institute. All the categories do apply; however, the Klingon languages category is a member of constructed languages, etc., so all of the extra categories are redundant. In other words, the rule of thumb is to not list parent and child categories, when the child is in the parent category, and Category:Klingon languages was a child of all the other categories. Nice edit! —C.Fred (talk) 14:45, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. Cleaning up categories is FUN. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:55, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

question

i have a little question.
what is a subpage and what is it used for? Electrical Experiment 23:47, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
A subpage is a page who has the name that looks like "Some other page/Subpage". They can't be used at the article space, but they are often used at the user pages, for example, User:Amire80/Sandbox. They can be used for private sandboxes or for breaking up your user page into smaller pieces.
To see a full list of subpages under some page, use this special link: [[Special:Prefixindex/Main page name]], for example Special:Prefixindex/User:Amire80.
You can read a full explanation here: Wikipedia:Subpages and Wikipedia:User page. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 06:52, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Bracha Ettinger

YOUR HELP PLRASE Dear Amir, I need your help again. It seems that someone opened an account especially to vandalize references to Bracha Ettinger. The contributer opened the account to do only this. His name is: Lesmandarins (Talk | contribs). This reminds me in the past a contributor named User talk:Bullseer who also opened an account only to vandalize Ettinger. Can you check the IP and see if this is the same person? It might have to do with Ettinger being also Israeli, because the person wrote some insulting remark concerning this "obscure israeli" etc, eventhough she lived in France for 22 years and has houses and studios in both countries. Can you follow this contributer to see if he continues this vandalism and also send him a warning? ThanksArtethical (talk) 16:22, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Artethical (talk) 16:23, 25 May 2008 (UTC) have a look at this if you need more information, and thanks for helping, http://books.google.com/books?q=Bracha+Ettinger&btnG=Search+Books Artethical (talk) 16:59, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for asking!
If the point of disagreement between you and Lesmandarins is whether Ettinger is "obscure" or "important", then you can try proving your point by citing sources. Proper sources are the key to pretty much everything in Wikipedia. I see that the article on Ettinger cites a lot of sources, but i don't have access to them, and even if i did have it, i am not sure that i would understand anything :) I'm really really not an expert in art or feminism; to me almost all artists and feminist philosophers are obscure, so it's hard for me to say which one of you is right. You may try finding someone who understands art and feminism better than i do.
There's a policy page in Wikipedia that is related to your argument: Wikipedia:Avoid peacock terms. I don't like this name - "peacock terms" - and recently i proposed changing it (see Wikipedia talk:Avoid peacock terms), but i completely agree with the essence of that page: articles about persons should not just say that a person was "important" or "great", but actually give examples of their importance. Obviously, these examples must be based on sources. Read this page and it may give you some ideas on proving that Ettinger was important in the relevant field.
As for IP - i can't check this user's IP, because i don't have "checkuser" rights. Anyway, this doesn't seem to be an appropriate case for checking the IP. Look at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser.
A funny comment: I noticed Bracha's name in the credits of a Keren Ann CD ... I wonder what language Keren and Bracha speak to each other - French or Hebrew?.. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:52, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

No idea what language they speak, but I have found in the ME Magazine dedicated to Keren Ann that Ettinger and Keren Ann are very close: there is a page on each of Keren Ann's closest friends. The content of the Issue is on http://www.memagazinenyc.com/me8kerenann.html Interesting. best Artethical (talk) 20:53, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Original Research and Verifiability

I do urge you to read WP:OR (which under the sub heading WP:PSTS states that editors should "make no analytic, synthetic, interpretive, explanatory, or evaluative claims about the information" drawn from primary sources} and WP:V (which contains "Editors should provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is challenged or is likely to be challenged, or the material may be removed." as part of the lead paragraph) as well as RS and WP:CITE.
