Discussing with other editors at article Talk pages
[edit]Hello again, AmphibiousThing2. At the ongoing requested move discussion at Talk:Chevalier d'Éon, you said:
I'm probably not going to respond to this any further as this conversation does not seem to be productive at all.
I was very surprised by this, as this whole topic is a very controversial one, and the discussion has barely started (~ 48 hours ago). Then I realized you are a brand new editor, and all five of your edits at Wikipedia are on that one page, and then I became less surprised.
You are still new here, and it takes a while to learn and dget used to the culture. The article talk page has a specific purpose, and is dedicated to discussing with other editors how best to improve the quality of the article. You cannot expect to always find everyone else in solid agreement with your views at any of the 6.9 million Wikipedia articles, let alone at an article on a contentious topic related to pronouns and gender identity. I have found the discussion very productive so far, your opinions very much included, and I am sorry you do not. But discussion has only just begun, and would benefit from the viewpoints of other editors as well. Please be a little patient; you are still new here, and you can expect to run into lots of different opinions about lots of different topics from lots of different editors during your wiki-career, probably more so in this topic area than in many others.
In the meantime, I will drop you a standardized message from WP:ArbCom concerning contentious topics, which has information you should know about if you plan to contribute to topics like this one. Thanks, and once again, welcome! Mathglot (talk) 23:19, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi I felt the conversation was not productive because you were not really responding to what I was saying instead arguing against a straw man. I don't have the time to engage in a pointless back-and-forth. I've stated my opinion and others can state theirs.
- I only really signed up because people were asking if there were examples of d'Eon and her contemporaries using feminine language for her and I know these sources off the top of my head. I've done this and am happy to direct people to more sources that may be helpful if they ask. AmphibiousThing2 (talk) 03:53, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- I understand, and thank you very much for providing those sources; they may well be helpful both for the resolution of the discussions, as well as for the improvement of the article going forward. Best of luck, Mathglot (talk) 04:46, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
Standard message for all editors editing articles on gender-related topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. Mathglot (talk) 00:22, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
