Hi, An56, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips[edit]

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Doctoral/Divinity degrees[edit]

What is the point of creating pages to list every person on wikipedia mentioned who has a doctorate or a degree in religion or theology? It will simply be a catalogue of thousands of names!!!!HarvardOxon 23:20, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Better that then the "people with doctorates" category that exists. Scientist and theologians should have seperate categories for their different degrees. An56 04:31, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have you by any chance counted up how many thousands of people will have to be on these lists? What is the point?HarvardOxon 06:28, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am not concerned with the number of the category. The point is the theological degrees should be separate from the secular because the fields are so different. An56 09:27, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Dr." use in the Ironside article[edit]

I'm curious about your deletion of the "Dr." notation, and you reference to WP:BIO. In WP:BIO, section "Opening Paragraph", point 1. it says that the opening paragraph should include the title, if any. It then refers to WP:Naming Conventions. In that guideline, under "Other non-royal titles", item 8., it says other names and titles should be used in the first paragraph...isn't "Doctor" or "Dr" a title? Seems as if using is urged by the WP guidelines, not discouraged. Please educate me as to why they shouldn't be there? Thanks! Akradecki 06:04, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to MOS:BIO, [1] (heading: academic titles), "Academic and professional titles (such as "Doctor" or "Professor") should not be used before the name in the initial sentence or in subsequent uses of the person's name. Verifiable facts about how the person attained such titles should be included in the article text instead."
If you notice articles such as Einstein's don't refer to him as "Dr." even though he is. If he has a Ph.D and you have a source note it. There are examples in that section as well.An56 08:00, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks...I stand corrected. Akradecki 23:03, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. It makes sense when you think about it because some people will just falsely use the title to gain legitmacy. The truly intellectual ones don't need to be called dr to prove their case. An56 04:15, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've known a few whose egos are completely dependent on that title, and I've also been priviledged to know a few who you'd never guess that they had the title because they are so humble and genuine. Akradecki 04:44, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
