Call for Participants ENDED as of March 7, 2005 Greetings all! As part of ongoing research at Georgia Institute of Technology, I'm looking for Wikipedians to volunteer to participate in a study. I am asking for approximately 30 to 90 minutes of your time depending on how talkative you are. :-)

If you are interested, please understand that any information you provide in an interview will be held in complete confidence and no identifiable details about you will be included when the results of this study are written up for publication.

If you would like to participate, please read and submit the form: link removed to consent to the study and I or one of my co-investigators will contact you to set up an interview at a convenient time. For more information about me and my research, please feel free to visit my userpage. Thanks for your time! Andrea Forte aka Andicat 20:32, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi there! Just letting you know (if you didn't know already) of a few research-based pages on Wikipedia. There's a project called Wikidemia, which is to bring together studies on Wikipedia, and how to possibly coordinate. Then there's Wikicensus which is to bring together actual surveys done in Wikipedia. Then, of course, there is Research on Meta. I am currently studying the Wikipedia community, as are a few others, and would be willing to help in directing you to relevant places if necessary, though I'm not sure about participating in your study myself. You may find that you don't get a huge response from the Village Pump (as it is so big and cluttered), though it is good to have announced your project and its purpose there and on your user page. You may have better luck in contacting people directly, possibly through the Most_active_wikipedians page or by announcing on the English Wikipedia mailing list (there are other more specific mailing lists as well). Good luck in your study, and you can find out more about my study and other useful pages on my user page. Cormaggio 13:35, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the input! We actually did contact folks via talk pages for the study we did last year and had a lot more luck with the Village Pump than individual contacts. I think it just depends how busy folks are, though. :-) Looking forward to hearing how your study turns out! Andicat 18:38, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi Angela! I cannot translate all the German Wikipedistik stuff but when you mail me after March 15th, I can send you my english paper. -- Nichtich 02:48, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

That would be great! Thanks so much. :-) Andicat 23:30, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

[edit]

Hi Andicat! You left a message on my talk page back in February—I've only just now received it because I hadn't been on Wikipedia for a while. Sorry for the delay!

In case you don't remember, you asked how I found some vandalism. I haven't done it for a while, but I remember I found vandalism through two chief ways.

Check out Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. Besides giving some good links to other helpful information on how to go about looking for vandals, it gives a listing of a lot of recent vandalism activity. One day, when I was bored, I just started going through the contribution history of known vandals listed there (randomly picking from the more recently listed ones), looking for recent edits—and fixing things when I came across them.

The other way I found some vandalism was by visiting Special:Recentchanges. One of my primary activities here was to add stub tags, wikify, and clean up grammar on new articles (sometimes easily noticed by their small size), but I also kept my eye open for vandalism, too.

Best wishes! —Zawersh 01:30, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Andicat -- sorry I didn't get hold of you in time. I just hardly ever check in anymore. This is especially true after I actually met one of the scholars used against some of my arguments and he confirmed that I understood him correctly and the person claiming to understand him didn't! JHK

You could try clearing your browser's cache (eg, in Internet Explorer it's Tools→Internet Options…→Delete Files…).

You could also try Ctrl-F5 in Internet Explorer, or you could try clicking on the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Drini&action=purge -- Curps 23:03, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip, for some reason clearing the cache and power reloaddidn't work, but action=purge did the job. Andicat 23:11, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch. =) Tlogmer 00:11, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From Wikipedia to the classroom

[edit]

I just read your article; it's pretty interesting and concides with some of my own research. How's the progress on 'Science Online'? Have you read Wikis in teaching and assessment: the M/Cyclopedia project? [1]] They in effect created something aking to your science online idea, yet I'd argue that such approach is not optimal. There is no need to create a different wiki for students; they should contribute to Wikipedia. It will make their work more useful, prevent duplication, allow them to interact with more experienced editors, familiarize them with pros and cons of Wikipedia and it has other advantages (perhaps I should put a draft of my article about the advantages of teaching with Wikipedia online).-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  21:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For some reason I didn't notice your reply till today :( You raise good points; certainly some activities are not good for wiki - but others are (the higher you go on the education ladder, the more, I think). Still, some may be - if you licence your SOwiki under GFDL than editors (including students themselves!) could transfer some facts without much problem. If you send me an @ at piokon at post dot pl I'll be happy to send you the draft of my paper; it disucsses my ideas for activities in academia. Unfortunatly I am just a teaching assistant and I cannot use Wiki in teaching as much as I would like (I work with older faculty who are not so willing to experiment with new tech); hopefully it will change in the future.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  20:08, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2008/Conference of the Americas

[edit]

Hello, As you may or may not know, Alexandria, Egypt was selected to host Wikimania 2008 [2]. So as to prevent the hard work of the many Wikimedians involved in the Atlanta bid from going to waste, we have decided to host a conference for the Americas. This is in no way an attempt to compete with Wikimania or make a statement against Wikimania.

As one of the people signed up to help with the Wikimania Atlanta bid, we hope you will join us at the Wikimedia Conference of the Americas. We will be having a meeting tonight in IRC tonight (Oct 15) at 9:30PM in #cota-atlanta on irc.freenode.org to discuss the conference. For more information about IRC see [3].

For more information about the Wikimedia Conference of the Americas see http://www.cota-atlanta.org and our wiki http://www.cota-atlanta.org/wiki.

If you do not wish to receive further notices about the COTA please remove your name from our notify list. --Cspurrier 18:10, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrea. If you upload more images here, can you please upload at the Commons rather than at en.wikipedia? You could even move some of your old uploads there if you like; see WP:MITC for instructions. Richard001 (talk) 07:47, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:CheetahWithCub.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Cheetah with cub.jpg. Commons is a repository of free media that can be used on all MediaWiki wiki's. The image(s) will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Cheetah with cub.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 15:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
