I just wanted to drop a quick apology. You were right; I failed to see the existing refs in the table caption. I'm sorry for assuming that your addition was uncited just because you weren't adding any refs at the time. Happy editing! – voidxor (talk | contrib) 18:15, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:MK Service Medal in Gold.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:MK Service Medal in Gold.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 23:40, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please could I ask you for a favour? On the page I just created, Luvuyo Nobanda, I have listed medals. I cannot identify the first one from the photo. BoonDock (talk) 15:11, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Andre, Isn't there another license under which these images can be added? This deletion of images is ridiculous. BoonDock (talk) 21:33, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No need, BoonDock, it won't be deleted unless it's unused in any article for more than seven days. Most of the articles that I uploaded such images for lately required a virtual rewrite, and Stefan2 has a hair-trigger and tags the images long before I'm done with editing the relevant article to add the picture. His present record is 30 minutes after upload, while I prefer the "several previews and one edit" way over the "multiple edit" way wherever possible. ^_^ So, unless one of the 7 stents in my heart fails or I run out of coffee before next Tuesday, it probably won't be a problem. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 22:18, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ROTLMAO. Hair trigger indeed! BoonDock (talk) 22:21, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Terrorist" and NPOV

[edit]

Hi Andre. I saw your reverted some edits I made on the page 1993 in South Africa. I have left a comment on the page's discussion page to talk about this as I feel it is important to resolve it before any more changes are made relating to this issue. Thanks, --Discott (talk) 12:11, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andre, I'm getting frustrated with the discussion on Talk:1993 in South Africa. We seem to be going around in a circle. Do you think it justifies an RFC on that talk page? BoonDock (talk) 08:07, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest we wait until the twelve examples materialise before we involve the rest of the planet. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 10:50, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Never happen. In the mean time, see List of terrorist incidents, 1993 BoonDock (talk) 11:18, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, I believe it's time to start adding the {{WikiProject Terrorism}} tag so some SA articles. I've kicked it off with Talk:Saint James Church massacre. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 11:41, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi André Kritzinger, hi BoonDock, I am fully supportive of putting up an RFC on the talk page although I do feel this is a pretty clear cut issue. I have been inviting people to join that conversation who I feel might be knowledgeable about it and be able to make a useful contribution so I am fully supportive of you doing like wise as well.--Discott (talk) 07:38, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ja, right, I saw. And the first one out of the blocks tells us the 9/11 article's lead needs to be rewritten to suit (I bet that will happen in a hurry...) and should not serve as example. May as well invite Patsy de Lille to comment as well, given her roots.
The issue is pretty clear to me as well. At the time, in 1993, I was sitting in boardrooms for a large part of the year and getting to know representatives from six of the eventual seven constituent military forces, to discuss the way forward to create the SANDF. The spirit was, for the most part, one of cautious goodwill, and in the middle of all this, these terrorists decided to go ape on soft targets.
(Still waiting for the twelve examples.) -- André Kritzinger (talk) 12:25, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why you are expecting 12 examples nor do I know what you are expecting 12 examples of. Also, why twelve exampls and not some other number, 12 is quite a lot? Depending on what examples you are looking for it also might not be at all necessary to give any examples.--Discott (talk) 08:25, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Twelve is a dozen, that's why, Discott. A dozen examples of the (pre-1994 SA) Army killing women and children in a place of worship. See the wild (actually slanderous) statement by Thuvack on Talk:1993 in South Africa on 28 January: "...the army could easily fit the definition of a terrorist organization if the bench mark to be used is killing women and children in a place of worship. I could give you a dozen examples to prove this point." I'm still waiting. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 13:25, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think you would have to take that up with Thuvack to get these examples. Even if examples are produced I am not convinced of its relevance to the topic being discussed which is the use of the term "terrorist" as that has already been addressed in editor guide manuals and policies around NPOV. --Discott (talk) 08:13, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Atlantic Star Air Crew Europe Clasp.jpg.

USA thing

[edit]

I have no problem with it being in the article, but I figured I would standardize it with all of the other lists that list "United States" as a section header. Let me know if there is a movement that is against this idea, as I would also support changing it back if it has been decided that that should be the proper way to note it. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 22:50, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No movement that I know of, just my own preference really, in an article that covers multiple countries. Don't tell anyone, but my argument for full country titles actually falls flat as being cumbersome when it comes to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which was even longer in bygone days. Keep well! -- André Kritzinger (talk) 23:01, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I actually prefer the 1977-era name of Libya, Al-Jamahiriya al-`Arabiyah al-Libiyah ash-Sha`biyah al-Ishtirakiyah al-Uzma, although the spelling of it varies from place to place, and it probably is not being used anymore. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 22:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting edits

[edit]

Hi, Andre:
1. By reverting the edits on the medal articles, you are also restoring the Checkwiki error #73: "ISBN-13 with wrong checksum". How do you propose to fix it?
2. Do you have a valid ISSN or ISBN for the Republic of South Africa Government Gazette? I couldn't find one.
In short, I don't think your reverts are the solution to the problem.
Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 12:53, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Knife-in-the-drawer, the number is exactly as it appears on the document, which I have in hand. Nothing to indicate whether it's ISBN or ISSN or something else, just a barcode with the number 9771682584003 (no spaces or dashes) below the barcode at left, and 27376 (the gazette number) above the barcode at right. I've also seen the whole document online in .pdf format, but damned if I can find it again... -- André Kritzinger (talk) 13:08, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Knife-in-the-drawer, I searched but couldn't find it online again. But I found this: Gazette no. 32898. There are more, all with the same long number. It seems the number 9771682584003 is generic for SA Gazettes, with only the gazette numbers that change. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 13:36, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmft... Looks like the document I came across was an April Fool's scam. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 13:44, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Andre Kritzinger:
It's good you have it in hand--that takes care of the verification. :-)
I don't like the number "9771682584003" as an ISBN (even though it has 13 digits) for two reasons:
According to the Wiki article "International Standard Book Number#Overview"
for a 13-digit ISBN, a prefix element - a GS1 prefix: so far 978 or 979 have been made available
Thus, "977" is not a valid prefix.
|When I run the number through [Book sources], it passes as valid (that's good). However, Google Book Search, Amazon.com, WorldCat, and most importantly all four South Africa sources return "No match found".
In other words, the number is not useful for readers of the articles to find a copy of the document.}}
I don't like the number "9771682584003" as an ISSN, which the article claims it is, for one reason:
The correct format of an ISSN is nnnn-nnnn. That's not the format of our "9771682584003".}}
If you agree, here's what I propose...
For each of the articles, change
"ISSN 9771682584003 27376"
to
"In the document, the printed identification number is 9771682584003."
We don't need to write the "27376" a second time because it's already specified in the citation here:
" Vol. 477, no. 27376".
Most importantly (for me :-)--no more Checkwiki error #73.
Do you agree? If yes, who makes the changes--you or me? Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 14:20, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It will appear in about 140 articles, as ISBN in all but the four that you edited and I reverted. If you can do it with a bot, please go ahead. I'm no good with bots so I'll have to do them one by one. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 14:31, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Andre Kritzinger:
I made our agreed-upon change to the four articles that got reverted plus the article that you reverted manually (poor Andre Kritzinger :-(.
Regarding the other 136 articles :-), can I add it to my "To Dos" list? I've got 1,135 more ISBN errors to fix. Seriously.
It was nice corresponding with you. Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 16:30, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No rush. Meanwhile I'll fix the ones I come across as I work on them. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 17:02, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Knife-in-the-drawer, I believe I came across an answer: OCLC 72827981. Someone added that into Louw Wepener Decoration many moons ago. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 00:45, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Andre Kritzinger: If that's what you want to go with, I'll change the five articles. Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 04:05, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not THE answer yet, since it's a generic page, not leading to the specific document. That'll turn up again, I'm sure. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 11:28, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: 2015 in South Africa - Mmusi Maimane

[edit]

Hi, Andre Kritzinger. You recently removed a sentence on the page 2015 in South Africa in which it was stated that the newly-elected Mmusi Maimane is the first black leader of the Democratic Alliance, claiming that it was "racist" and irrelevant. Innumerable reliable secondary sources [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] (nearly all, in fact) that covered the election stated this fact somewhere in their articles. Saying that Maimane's racial background is irrelevant is like claiming that it is irrelevant that Barack Obama is the first African-American President of the United States, or that it is irrelevant that Margaret Thatcher was the first and only female British Prime Minister. I strongly disagree with you on this matter, and look forward to hearing your response. Many thanks, Knyzna1 (talk) 18:52, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

His colour is irrelevant. His ability is not, however. Same with Obama and Thatcher. And Mandela. Mentioning their colour or gender as "events" is actually racist/sexist and should be considered an insult to them, since it makes one wonder whether they were elected because they were able, or because they were coloured/female. And since all the sources you quote are media, here's my opinion, for what its worth:
One of South Africa's (and the world's) biggest problems is the media who stirs the racism pot at every opportunity. So what if Maimane is black?
When I look at Maimane, I don't see black. I see a young man that has, so far, impressed me.
When I look at Zuma and Malema and Mugabe, however, I DO see black, because the blackness is in their hearts, minds and attitudes. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 19:27, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Personal feelings and attitudes aside, I still assert that his racial background is relevant and should be included in this article - the fact is mentioned in the article on Mmusi Maimane. Also, note that the lead sentence of each of the articles on Mandela, Margaret Thatcher and Obama (all of which have either GA or FA status) clearly state their racial background, or gender in Thatcher's case, as being notable. Knyzna1 (talk) 04:53, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Leave the genders or colours in the respective biographical articles then, where it belongs. In the year articles, a short sentence on their achievements/progress/appointments to date is more appropriate than their physical appearance, since in spite of what the media would attempt to lead one to consider as "important", he was elected on the grounds of his past performance and abilities, not his colour. (I'm copying this whole discussion to the year's talk page, where this debate is relevant.) -- André Kritzinger (talk) 11:29, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If the Accumulated Campaign Service Medal is not a campaign medal in that case, clearly by that rationale it should be removed from the campaign medal template and inserted on another template. So I shall do so. Hammersfan (talk) 14:11, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

9771682584003 Revisited

[edit]

Hi, Andre Kritzinger:

I finally got some time to work on the "Republic of South Africa Government Gazette Vol. 477, no. 27376 ISBN 9771682584003" situation. Here's what I found:

  • There are no more instances of ISBN 9771682584003 left on Wikipedia; I fixed the last one this week when it showed up on a Checkwiki error listing.
  • Given your previous description of the location of "9771682584003" in the hardcopy--"below the barcode at left"--it's probably an EAN, not an ISBN.
I tried "9771682584003" in {{EAN}} and {{UPC}}. The EAN / UPC databases both say that "9771682584003" is valid, but neither database has an entry for it.
  • Only the six citations that I fixed contain the sentence "In the document, the printed identification number is 9771682584003."
  • The Bad News: OCLC 72827981 is probably not the best page at WorldCat for Republic of South Africa Government Gazette. Much better is OCLC 31578734 because its page specifies an ISSN and it lists many more libraries where the gazette can be found.

They are "your" 160 articles, so you can decide how to handle the situation. Here are a variety of possibilities:

  1. Goes to a specific page on WorldCat
  2. Will require a bot run
  1. An ISSN for periodicals like Republic of South Africa Government Gazette is the equivalent of an ISBN for a book. It's internationally recognized.
  2. Goes the an index page on WorldCat
  3. Will require a bot run
  • Add the sentence "In the document, the printed identification number is 9771682584003." to the 154 articles that don't already include it. Will require a bot run.
Note: I'm guessing that the ISSN is printed in the hardcopy, too....
  • Delete the sentence from the six articles that already include it. Can be done manually.
  • Do nothing
  • Another possibility that you conceive

Please leave a note on my Talk page to let me know what you decide. If a bot run is required, we'll discuss that step next. Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 05:03, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Specific-source template

[edit]

For future reference, rather than writing the same citation 160 times, you might want to create a Category:Specific-source templates. You create the template ONE time and transclude it 160 times. Then, if any changes are necessary, you simply edit the template, and the change is automatically propagated through all 160 citations. Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 07:44, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ja, I should have made a template. I did with the main sources for all the locomotive articles I created/worked on, but since I didn't plan to do all the medal articles but just the few in whose institution I was involved, I didn't bother. Then things got out of hand and I did the whole kaboodle. I prefer a manual edit instead of a bot, though, since in the process I usually find other things that require tweaking as well. Will get to it soonish. Thanks. André Kritzinger (talk) 12:21, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You need to reconsider the number of items included in article South African locomotive history. I came there due to an Icelandic volcano! See the now three editors that think this is far far too much 'context'. I was having problems loading the page it is so large. Shenme (talk) 05:46, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ED

[edit]

Andre, I have been looking through WP for a reasonable image for the ED, but unsuccessfully. There are any number on the web, but ownership is the issue. Do you have access to one? If not, I might be able to photograph one in a rack of WW2 medals, but it will be through glass (I'm not prepared to dismount the pieces)and I'm not sure how well it will present. Pity you couldn't use the image of the GV Colonial Auxiliary Medal (it was my grandfathers, I took some pleasure in having it in WP).Lexysexy (talk) 00:07, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in the process of manufacturing pictures right now and I'll be tackling the ED article again tomorrow - it's one of about five remaining on my to-do list. (With some trepidation, since it looks like a complicated one.) The EM after that, and that one looks even more complicated. Those pictures were great, if only the ribbons were somewhat longer. If you can upload new versions with longer ribbons, I'll stitch them together and put it back in. Bedtime now, it's getting close to 03:00 here. André Kritzinger (talk) 00:46, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. I'll need a couple of days, it's school holidays here, and I'm on entertainment duty for a while. I'll try to find a starker background also. I'll try the WW2 rack experiment as well.Lexysexy (talk) 07:00, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Electrification on South African railways

[edit]

Seems like an interesting topic. You should concider writing an article on the topic, because it looks like you have the information and few other countries have so many information on railway electrification. 4-4-0 to the left?

[edit]

Re: this revert, first of all, I know almost nothing about trains, and maybe 'front of loc, to the left' is a standard way to refer to wheel layout diagrams. However, in ordinary English 'to the left' is fairly meaningless (except 'could you move to the left', or 'his house is to the left of mine', both of which still beg the question 'whose left?'). Being able to see the wheels means one is looking from left or right, and not looking at the front at all. I think we both understand that this is a diagramatic representation of wheels as they would be seen by someone looking FROM a position directly left of the locomotive. I leave you, who clearly does know about trains, to decide what is clear.Pincrete (talk) 18:15, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ps … semi-apology, I suddenly realise the meaning may be 'Front of locomotive is to the left of this diagram' , ie it is not describing viewing point, rather how to read diagram, if I'm now right, apologies, but I still think the English is a bit unclear.Pincrete (talk) 07:02, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:King's Medal for Champion Shots (George V).jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:King's Medal for Champion Shots (George V).jpg.

Cape gauge and Standard gauge

[edit]

Andre, you have just reverted my second attempt to edit Natal Railway Company. I pointed out in the comment that:

Wikipedia articles on South African railways refer to 1,067 mm as "Cape gauge" and 1,435 mm as "standard gauge." The best thing to do is to remove the reference to "broad gauge" and leave only the measurement.

However, you reverted it anyway, with the comment:

No. Such articles need updating, then.

Are you suggesting that *every* page on South African railways be edited to change "Cape gauge" to "standard gauge"? And "standard gauge" to "broad gauge"? Your proposal would cause massive disruption to Wikipedia:

  • Every one of the last 10 articles you edited uses "Cape gauge" to refer to 1,067 mm.
  • Articles on South African railways use "Cape gauge" to refer to 1,067 mm and "standard gauge" or "international standard gauge" to refer to Gautrain.

South African sources now agree on "Cape gauge" for 1,067 mm and "standard gauge" for 1,435 mm. Here are some of the top results on Google:

  • "There are many people who believe South Africa should move from its current narrow Cape rail gauge (1 067 mm) to the standard gauge (1 435 mm), says Deputy Transport Minister Jeremy Cronin."[1]
  • "Africa’s most industrialised economy should start to convert its 20,000 kilometers (12,427 miles) of track to standard-gauge rail size from the narrower Cape gauge, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters told reporters on Tuesday."[2]
  • "Cape (1065mm) gauge, which is the rail gauge used in the S A Rail Commuter Corporation" "Standard (1435mm) gauge,  which is  used in  the vast  majority  of rail networks, worldwide."[3]
  • "Although railways in South Africa use the 1067 mm (3ft 6in) Cape gauge, Gautrain will be built to the more expensive standard gauge of 1435 mm (4 ft 8.5in)."[4]

You seem to be the only Wikipedia editor who is using "broad gauge" to refer to 1,435 mm in South Africa. Every one of the top Google results for 1,435 mm "broad gauge" in a Wikipedia page on South Africa is a page that you edited:

Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia. Terms that can cause confusion need to be avoided. For example, several Japanese pages refer to 1,067 mm as "narrow gauge", but others refer to only the measurement. That is a reasonable compromise that I have attempted to adopt for the Natal Railway Company article.

Why is this so objectionable that you have reverted it?

- Tototo30 (talk) 05:08, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cape gauge is the accepted term for 3'6" gauge in South Africa (and some other countries), and has been since about the 1880s-1900s. The 4'8½" gauge existed here for about 15 years on an approximately 60 mi (97 km) stretch in the Cape, and 17 years (with two locomotives at its peak) on a 5 mi (8.0 km) stretch in Durban. These were replaced by Cape gauge from 1872 and 1877 respectively. By 1936, Cape gauge consisted of 13,600 mi (21,900 km) route distance in South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland, not even counting the additional extensions into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, the Congo and Angola.
In 2009, the 80 km (50 mi) long 4'8½" gauge Gautrain route came into operation. With 80 km (50 mi) of 4'8½" gauge and 20,000 mi (32,000 km) of 3'6" Cape gauge, which would you consider as standard? I was not, however, suggesting that every page on South African Railways be edited to change "Cape gauge" to "standard gauge". Cape gauge is correct.
Both terms (standard and broad) have been used for 4'8½" gauge in South African documentation and literature over the years, but the South African standard gauge is still referred to as Cape gauge - the term "standard" could obviously not be used here. You were right, actually, with your suggestion that "the best thing to do is to remove the reference to "broad gauge" and leave only the measurement", and I apologise for my rather abrupt (second) reversal. - André Kritzinger (talk) 13:36, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It is indeed a thorny issue: what is "standard" when there are two standards? I'm glad we could come to an agreement. I will go back to the page and remove only the "broad gauge" text that could cause confusion, leaving the 1,435 mm measurement.

A rather bizarre statement, since you appear to have edited Honoris Crux Diamond, and that's certainly not what it says there! It says it was discontinued in 1993, not that it is not considered to have existed. Very different things. In addition, the reason for my edit was that the wording of Walker's current article suggests to me that he won a decoration at the level of the Victoria Cross or Medal of Honor twice, whereas in fact he won a decoration at the level of the Distinguished Service Order or Distinguished Service Cross twice, which is again rather different (i.e. he may have won the highest decoration to be awarded, but it was essentially a second-level decoration and not a first-level, since the first-level was never actually awarded). -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:02, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See South African military decorations order of wear for the official order of precedence, as published in 2002. (OK, I wrote that, too.) No decoration or medal which was never awarded, is included in the list - there are seven. All of them were included in earlier versions of the official order of precedence list, but prior to 1994 it was still possible for all seven of them to be awarded. The HCD therefore remained official until the whole Honoris Crux family was discontinued in 1992 - after that, having never been awarded, it no longer officially exists and the HCG became SA's top honour in respect of the era concerned. What R4 was awarded, therefore ranks on par with the VC and Bar. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 14:39, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I'll take your word for it. South Africa seems to have had a very confusing set of decorations over the years! -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:24, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Confusing is an understatement! Imagine what it was like before Fred Brownell put in his huge effort to create order out of the awards of eight different founts of honour after 1994. Fortunately, the silly precedent of 1952 was not repeated after 1994. In fairness, though, the shenanigans with British and Colonial long service awards between the Victorian and Georgian eras were equally confusing. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 14:03, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am currently working on drastically expanding the size and scope of the article on the Netherlands-South African Railway Company. This article includes extensive text from some of your other articles on Wikipedia. Given your obvious expertise in the field, I would appreciate it if you took at look at the new and improved NZASM article as there is a good deal of things I am still uncertain about or could use improvement.

Francoisdjvr (talk) 09:29, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Francois, I'll take a look. Meanwhile, I see you made use of pic of the the Braamfontein explosion loco being exhumed. I found that on Facebook, posted by one Hilton Teper some time ago, and I remember there were a lot more which I didn't use, all usable in Wiki since they're well past copyright. So I went looking and found it at Photos of Hilton Teper on his profile page. Scroll through it, further down there are scans of a SAR publication by FC Sturrock, one-time minister of transport, which may turn up useful info for you, maybe even a good reference. Happy hunting! -- André Kritzinger (talk) 11:15, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Andre Thank you for your response, I was actually curious about the source of that particular photo. If you're ever looking for Railway photos yourself, the South-Africa House's NZASM photo collection has since been digitized and can be viewed here or here though I was not able to find the photo of the 40-tonner from Braamfontein, so thanks for the information! Update: Found the original! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francoisdjvr (talkcontribs) 11:26, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Andre Hey Andre, I'm sorry that you had to undo my edits on the locomotives. I did not see the navbar earlier, but now that you've mentioned it I feel a bit silly for not noticing it. Still a bit new to editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francoisdjvr (talkcontribs) 07:37, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dutton Roadrail Tractors on SAR

[edit]

Hi Andre. I see you have recently added an article on this topic, thanks. I hope you don't mind but I've made a few amendments. A question for you - where did you find out that the tractors (actualy built by Yorkshire PSW Co, not Beardmore) from the Singlewood line went to Wembley for the exhibition? I haven't seen any reference to this anywhere else and it seems unlikely as in 1924 they would be needed for the construction and subsequent operation of the Singlewood line - and NG6 No 98 did not appear on the line until some time after opening. Most of the trains on the Wembley line seem to have been worked by Beardmore-Sentinel steam tractors or Beardmore-Halley petrol ones, or a Burford half-track. I have seen no picture or report of the Yorkshires appearing there.

Incidentally did you know that there was a Dutton line in Natal, from the Leuchars Estate to the SAR at Sandymount, a distance of 5 miles? It seems that the Dennis tractor from Canada Junction worked there. (The Times, 31 May 1923)

Grin Low (talk) 01:24, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grin Low, I think I may have got the Wembley bit here, but I'm not sure and don't have time to look right now - I'm in the middle of another exercise. I do have a stack of articles, scans of documents and original drawings, correspondence by Dutton himself and more waiting for me to wade through, so the article will get a major overhaul some time soonish. In the meantime, anything you can add or correct will be welcome. Thanks. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 17:36, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andre, thanks for quick reply. The film is indeed a remarkable resource, but a pity it has no captions or commentary - it isn't even in chronological order. The Yorkshires appear but I think only at home in SA, but there is plenty of footage at Wembley with several different tractors of other makes. It's a pity the film wasn't available before I wrote my book (When not on Wikipedia I am R. G. Cash - thanks for citing my little effort as a source). I'll make a few changes if you don't mind and await your additional material. Grin Low (talk) 19:22, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Andre Kritzinger. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

No, it wasn't that - I actually missed the link and have no issue with it, sorry... The revert was meant to undo the inline Commonscat link in a separate new section. Categories

[edit]

I appreciate your keenness to rename the categories, but you need to use the speedy rename process at WP:CfD rather than move them manually. You can request all of the South West African categories in one listing. A bot will then do all the renaming and recategorisation after the suggestion has been left unoppposed for 48 hours. Number 57 17:08, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, will do. I expected a few renames but it rapidly got out of hand... - André Kritzinger (talk) 17:16, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I need some advice. The WP:C2D listing format
* [[:Category:old name]] to [[:Category:new name]] – Reason ~~~~
makes provision to list categories one by one, even though you said it can all be in one listing. Finding and listing them one by one will be just as tedious as manually finding and renaming them. What I need, it seems, is a request for a bot to look for any category/subcategory/article title that has a hyphen in South West Africa or German South West Africa and remove it, and also similarly edit the text of such articles. - André Kritzinger (talk) 18:02, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Another aspect is that you should never add links to non-existent categories per WP:REDNOT. I started listing them for a speedy rename before I realised quite what had happened - but trust me it's easier to go for a rename (where a bot will take care of all the contents) rather than doing it the way you had been doing and hoping that the red-link fairies would create new cats. Le Deluge (talk) 19:12, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Diameterinside

[edit]

Why are you using |diameterinside= for what are verifiably outside diameters? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:22, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Redrose64, To use the outside diameter of a boiler in loco specifications is useless and you'll likely find it to be the exception, not the rule. To determine boiler capacity (volume, heating surface, etc), the inside diameter of the boiler, the outside diameter of the boiler tubes and flues and the inner distance between tube plates are needed, all those surfaces that would be covered by water or steam in a working order boiler. All boiler measurements in loco drawings are given this way. The only exceptions I've found so far were really old engines, usually because factory drawings of them could not be found and someone had to clamber about the engine with a measuring tape or guesstimate the diameter. In such cases I add "outside" after the diameter just to be clear about it. Outside diameter is of no use unless the thickness of the boiler skin is also brought into the equation, but draughtsmen and designers preferred the KISS principle. For that reason I would also argue against, for example, adapting the infobox to make provision for an outside boiler diameter. - André Kritzinger (talk) 23:18, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know how to calculate volume and heating surface, thank you: I have been studying the subject for over thirty years. My point is that texts on British locomotives rarely give an inside diameter - the only cases that I've ever seen have been in detailed engineering drawings, the kind that also specify plate thickness, the corner radius of flanges, size of rivets and their spacing. Other than such engineering drawings, where boiler dimensions are quoted (either in tabular form or on a diagram) it is always the outside diameter which is given, normally that of the largest ring, but there are exceptions. Tapered boilers - such as those used on the GWR from 1902 and the LMS from 1933 - often have a minimum and maximum diameter quoted, but again, other than on engineering drawings they are always outside diameters.
It is misleading to place a figure into a parameter that was not intended for it. The parameter was added by you at 22:29, 2 January 2016 during the first of a long series of edits (example) which made massive changes to the infobox. There was a discussion at the time concerning a large number of additional parameters, now archived to Template talk:Infobox locomotive/Archive 2#Additional fields required: Steam, mostly, but only two people - yourself and DePiep (talk · contribs) - commented there. Previous to your edits, it was possible to use the |boiler= parameter to hold these outside diameters; now, it is not. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:18, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Your last statement needs some looking at: "Previous to your edits, it was possible to use the |boiler= parameter to hold these outside diameters; now, it is not."
That's not quite a true reflection of facts. It was possible to hold both inner and outer dimensions without any indication whether it was outside or inside diameter, which was not a particularly accurate portrayal of specifications. That was misleading! Way back when, in the SA loco articles, I began adding "outside" in those cases where the drawings specified as such, i.e. the exceptions where the inside diameter was not known.
Just to clarify: What precisely is the outside boiler diameter defined as anyway? Around the boiler's skin? Around the boiler cladding?
In the few UK loco articles I edited the past few days to fix parameter errors, I could find no indication in any of them that the measurement was the outside diameter, and I honestly never expected it to be outside by default, hence the need for you to re-edit them. If, in the sources used for these articles where boiler dimensions are quoted either in tabular form or on a diagram, it is always the outside diameter which is given, why was this fact never mentioned as such in any article's text?
I suggest you do what I used to do with exceptions until the infobox was expanded. The parameter calls for inside diameter and if only outside diameter is known, simply add the word "outside" after the measurement.
Meanwhile, I suggest you put Category:Articles with unknown parameter in infobox locomotive in your startup list. It's in mine to highlight erroneous use of infobox parameters, or use of non-existing parameters. The present locos in there are all GCR as well, so maybe I'd better leave them for your attention. Please note that in these nine remaining articles with infobox errors, nowhere in the text or table of any of them is any mention made of whether boiler dimensions were measured outside or inside. - André Kritzinger (talk) 11:49, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Preserved South African Locomotives

[edit]

Hi André Kritzinger

Yes I think your telling the truth and yes it will take time or such to go over again, I am as trying to list whatever your stateing of preserved or storage, but I think you may need to write it sometime and on all engines,

That means like you told me in the section perhaps write the ones preserved and in storage on steam engines and that be up-to you from now on,

And also I think I do need help on all these SAR engines of South Africa what's left and what is not, Trooper201 (talk) 22:35, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So if were to put in preservation list or storage then will add in the

Number Manufacturer Year Balanced Motion Location Status Notes
CGR IMR or BR SAR Sold
Number Manufacturer Year Balanced Motion Location Status Notes
CGR SAR Sold
Number Manufacturer Year Balanced Motion Location Status Notes
SAR Sold
Number Manufacturer Year Balanced Motion Location Status Notes
SAR

This is something you need to try out if editing preserved or such engines why not give this template a go, and also make a edit if you can of it and if no CGR or IMR or BR then give it width=45 up to two colums or three without too much and colspan can be 2 or 3 in some places so that's not that hard though and it could work.

also check out the document link below tells of all SAR engines, it was requested when I asked permission from Sandstone Heritage Trust to learn of all heritage engines.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1etp-ezkDpRHmjaK-LVNPQsypAMfL5aZLHnw6_RzhEME/edit#gid=285943220 the link is in discription here on engines so tell me which of them is preserved or incorrect or in storage and also as spare parts before I go over it again? thanks...
