Feel free to comment below. Normally I prefer all discussion on my main talk page, but this is an exception. TIA Andrewa (talk) 18:29, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Previous discussion[edit]

See Talk:Lech Wałęsa/Archives/2012/April#Diacritics in general. Andrewa (talk) 18:38, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Even if[edit]

I'm of two minds as to whether the nutshell should include the last clause even if it is more commonly omitted. It seeks to explicitly avoid counting "votes", whether by Google or otherwise, and avoid unproductive conflict in that way. But it may be better to keep it simple. After some years of experience and reflection, I now think it's a very helpful way to go. Andrewa (talk) 23:53, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Are we there yet[edit]

I will be away and offline for the first half of January 2011, so don't want to propose this guideline formally until after my return. But feel free to discuss and develop it, or even propose something in my absence if that seems a good thing. Andrewa (talk) 19:09, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting comment from Jimbo[edit]

To answer a bunch of specific questions above in one go: yes, all of those renamings to use English rather than foreign languages should happen immediately... [1].

Still digesting the full quote, from 11 June 2011 and well worth a read. I was alerted to it at Đặng Hữu Phúc in an ongoing move discussion. Andrewa (talk) 20:47, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A revealing comment[edit]

Some users have strong feelings about diacritics, often owing to their own linguistic backgrounds.

This !vote takes some beating as an example! Unless it's by this subsequent edit.

What I hope to achieve[edit]

Actually, there's probably little hope! But it would be good to waste less time on these discussions, so we could get on with improving the encyclopedia. And when these discussions generate heat, they probably lose us some of the very editors we most want to retain. Andrewa (talk) 23:09, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For some it's a big issue[edit]

I claim in the latest draft that the omission of diacritics is not a big issue for readers. Perhaps I should clairify.

It's not a big issue for readers who are just here after information. That's what I mean by readers.

Of course in a sense we're all readers, including editors, and including the editors who are here to promote a POV. And for them, it's a very big issue!

But not for the rest of us. Andrewa (talk) 23:51, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
