Thanks for cleaning up the Újpest disambiguation, I think it's great now. Üdv, --Hu:Totya (talk!) 10:47, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

March 2009

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to the page Twatt, Orkney has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, please ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thank you. I think you're mistaken.--Anewpester (talk) 18:26, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BD vs YOB and YOD categories

[edit]

Please don't replace YOB/YOD categories wirth BD and/or Lifetime. There is no consensus for that. Please read the documentation in Template:Lifetime. Thanks. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:54, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Categories

[edit]

Please be careful not to add non-existent categories to articles, as you did in this edit which added 4 non-existent categories to Category:Jewish murderers. I have already reverted your edit, so no further corrective action is required. However, I would recommend that you review any edits where you have added categories to ascertain whether you've added other non-existent categories to other articles. Any time you are not sure whether you're adding a real category it's best to check first by using the "Show Preview" button before you finalize your edit. If the newly added category shows up as a red-link that means that it doesn't exist. Cgingold (talk) 02:00, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are certainly correct that being Jewish is not a nationality. However, adding non-existent categories is not the solution. Categories are fundamentally different than articles, and should never be added as red-links unless you are actually going to create them. In this case, your edit compounded the problem because you also removed the only real categories, thereby leaving Category:Jewish murderers without any parents whatsoever. You are of course free to adjust the existing parent cats in some other way, in order to deal with your stated concern (which I share). Cgingold (talk) 02:35, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you did leave that category -- sorry for the misstatement. Nonetheless, the fundamental issue is that you completely removed the category from the category structure for Murderers. As for the rule you're asking for, it may or may not be explicitly stated (I'd have to check to say for sure), but it is very clearly discouraged -- unlike red-links to articles. Category red-links are regularly removed as routine cleanup -- they're not left intact in hopes that some day an editor will create them. Believe me, this is not merely my personal POV. If you'd like to, you can raise this question at Wikipedia talk:Categorization. Hope that helps. Cgingold (talk) 02:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
