Cathedrals

I was just about to add pics, and have found some, but my computer froze! Amandajm (talk) 06:35, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm looking for a French Cathedral that had a provost, rather than Wells, which was atypical. I'd rather use one that had a provost in a major role that any of the named ones where the role was subordinate. I do wish people would reference the major examples instead of always citing the exceptional cases. Which were the 36 cathedrals? Amandajm (talk) 06:45, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

OK, I found Metz. Sometimes a pic is easy to replace. At other times it is not. There is only one picture of a cathedral choir inside a cathedral (York) and that is not a very good one, but I have included it. The pic from Kilkenny in Ireland is the one that best shows the chancel furniture. The pic inside St John's is by far the best pic of a bishop's throne, but a pic of the same cathedral is included as the only patriarchal cathedral in the catholic church. I can't use an orthodox example in that position, and there is some argument about using the term "cathedral" at all.

I like the weatherboard Chapter House from Finland. It gets away from the totally medieval or Gothic Revival concept of what a chapter house is. However, the pic at Southwell is really good because it shows the seating for a really large gathering.

To balance the emphasis on the Italian side, the cathedral at Parma could be replaced with a different one that gives a good view of a cathedral as part of a monastery. The Lincoln Bishop's palace could also go. I don't want to change the great view of Pisa with the tourist buggy in front of it.

Also, for reasons of layout, and to cram in as many pics as possible, I've kept every picture to landscape format. Amandajm (talk) 07:23, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll search Flickr for any potential replacements for the bishop's palace image - there are also a few bishop's throne images on licences potentially compatable with WP ([1] [2] etc) Antienne (talk) 07:33, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Finished scouring Flickr - most people assigning free licences unfortunately (perhaps unknowingly) do not use ones compatable with WP. This bishop's palace and this throne could help with diversity - if you think they are improvements (the throne is quite blurry) I will upload them. Antienne (talk) 07:54, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I think that the balnce is better. I found a German bishop's palace and added it as well as the lincoln ruine, a little further down. I also put in Chartres, down the bottom, with a nice little caption, which redresses the inequality. I think it's OK now! Amandajm (talk) 07:56, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
