[edit]Doroud Arad jan. First of all thank you for your support regarding Sassanid Empire FA poll. Secondly and more importantly welcome to wikipedia !, if you any help do not hesitate to leave me a message. Best wishes ! Amir85 18:25, Wednesday 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- I forgot to ask, it seems that you have a quite a number of Iran-related pictures, if so could you send a list of their subject ? Amir85 18:36, Wednesday 15 March 2006 (UTC)
What I meant was, could you send me a name list of cities, monuments, etc. whom you have pictures about. By the way I'm planning for my next project which I think I'm going to work on Persian music article for feature article nomination, if you are interested we could work together. Taj
[edit]As far as I know UNESCO said nothing about the Taj being construced by Iranians or in Iranian style. The sentence you quote is just a gloss by the editors of that page. There's nothing wrong with it as a loose generalisation, but it's not an official declaration. As for the size of Iran, Anatolia/Turkey has never been thought of as part of Iran itself, any more than the other lands that were at one time part of the various Persian/Parthian etc empires, which included the Indus and Egypt. The main problem is that it tends to be unhelpfully provocative to make these claims of national "responsibility" for the Taj. If it were unambigously true, there would be a case, but it isn't. Designers from various backgrounds worked on the design.Paul B 23:09, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Damavand in winter
[edit]Image:Damavand in winter.jpg seems to be a copy of this image. Are you Hamed Khorramyar? (If not, you'll have to change the tag on the image, as well as provide on demand written proof from Khorramyar that he did, in fact, put it in the public domain.) Thanks, Wikiacc (?) 21:17, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- I see you have changed the tag to {{PD-release}}. By copyright policy, you'll have to be able to prove that Hamed Khorramyar did release it into the public domain. (Per Wikipedia:Copyrights#Iran, images that are copyrighted in Iran but not in the U.S. are still not permissible.) Wikiacc (?) 15:51, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Guys:
My name is Hamed Khorramyar and I am the photographer and copyright owner of Damavand in winter picture.
I saw your discussion on Wiki about the copyright. Hereby I declare all my photos in my both websites Photogallery one and Photogallery two can be used for non comercial use at www.wikipedia.org - I am happy to contribute a very small piece to this project. I am new to Wikipedia, so please guide me, should Arad erase the the picture and I upload it again? or how it works? Please reply in my own user discussion place Thanks.

Shapur, Valerian and Philip
[edit]The caption to image Image:Valeriano.jpg in Shapur I article says:
- Shapur I receives the homage of Valerian (Standing, his hand is hidden in his sleeve as the sign of submission) and Philip the Arab(on his kneels), the Roman Emperors he defeated and took prisoner.
When did Shapur capture Philip? What is the reference for the interpretation of this relief?--Ahrarara 01:53, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well my reference is also noted on the image's page. It's from the book : Persia An Archaeological Guide by : Sylvia A. Matheson. Persian Savant 23:06, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Map of Achaemenid empire
[edit]Salam Arad, khasteh nabashi !
I made yesterday a map of the achaemenid empire that I'd like to produce also in English (I've made it in french for the moment as the source was a french book). If you could translate all the name of locations into english for me, I could make the english bitmap version. I'll then post the .SVG source file so someone could try to make it in other languages (persian for example ?). Thanks for your help. Fabienkhan | talk page 16:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC) I also left that message to Zereshk, tell him, if you wanna do that work so 2 people don't work on it at the same time. Sepas gozaram Fabienkhan | talk page 16:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
If u would, please help out fabien with the map. I'm occupied with working on making a more complete English encyclopedia for Iran: Wikiran. Mer30--Zereshk 03:00, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Salam Arad, I just need the text translated like you said (babylone=babylonia) for the cities and for all the names on the map, that'll make it easier and faster for me. Farsi ye kam baladam chon modaram iranie (daghgighan azari, vali bishtar farsi baladam), I'm a french native (bābām faransavie), but now discovered Iran for more than 2-3 years now, and in the process of learning more about that great country and culture... So nothing that surprising !! Khāhesh mikonam. Fabienkhan | talk page 09:06, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the translation, I'll make it in a few days and tell you where to find it so you can include it in the appropriate articles. For the "Centers of power", I can add Babylonia if you wish so. Concerning the Silk road, I can add it too, but I need to see the path of it on some source that you could give me.
- I'm made another one too that might be interesting for you: Image:Carte Iran 1000.png, which shows Iran circa AD 1000. For the most obvious names, I should have no problem translating most of the names, just give me the exact names of dynasties so it'll be faster. Cheers, Fabienkhan | talk page 08:06, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Done Find the english version of the achaemenid empire map: Image:Map achaemenid empire en.png. I'm waiting for your comments. I didn't put the silk road yet and it won't be before next week. Ruz-e tun bekheyr. Fabienkhan | talk page 21:00, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Arge Bam and other images
[edit]Hi Arad. You may have noticed that I've left some comments along with my Oppose vote to your Arge Bam photo on FPC. In case you haven't, it's only polite that I should inform you here and allow you to reply. Please don't be offended, hopefully you can understand my concerns - I apologise if my skepticism is unfounded. Regards, --Yummifruitbat 00:47, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply on FPC - I think you've addressed all my queries. I personally rather like the effect of the images from your father's camera - although they don't make for the most 'encyclopaedic' results for the reasons you explained, there is a certain artistic quality to them which I find rather attractive. I'd still be interested to learn what sort of camera was used - perhaps you could ask your father next time you speak with him? --Yummifruitbat 17:58, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Arad, Thanks for your post - I would like to know how to do it, is it possible to reduce the noise in Photoshop or something ? I personally don't think it will be selected for a FP but its worth a try :) --Agods 14:01, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Szalvay photos
[edit]Arad - I'd like to point out that all the Victor Szalvay photos you recently uploaded and added to FPC are lacking any source information, outside of Szalvay's name. My concern is that I see them all on flickr, but marked as "All rights reserved", not CC licensed [1] [2] [3] [4]. If you have additional information (such as communication from Szalvay) to indicate that these really are CC, you should add that to the image pages. Otherwise, they may be regarded as copyright violations. --Davepape 20:32, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

FPC closure
[edit]Arad, I've responded on the FPC talk page. --YFB ¿ 00:08, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
FPC closings
[edit]I noticed you closed out the nomination for Image:Cheetah4.jpg. I would actually suggest that you don't close any FPCs for a little while, especially your own. Although the consensus to promote this was pretty clear, because you're new to the FPC process, you should gain a little more experience with how things work (such as your complaint about Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Image:Ciudad de las ciencias noche.JPG) before you try your hand at this. Basically, we need you to show that you can be impartial and so far your comments on Wikipedia talk:Featured picture candidates and some other FPC nominations have shown that you're more concerned about getting your nominations promoted. So please, wait a few months so you can see why things are done the way they are. I don't mean to be rude or dismissive, just a little concerned that you think people like Yummifruitbat are going against process when in fact they are not. Regards, howcheng {chat} 16:36, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
FPC sock/meatpuppet votes
[edit]Arad, please do not remove votes, or comments made by others, from FPC nominations - you have been asked not to do this before on [[Talk:WP:FPC]]. My reading of this situation would be that, if these comments are being made by other users 'to reflect your opinion... just for fun' then this is, at best, meatpuppetry. This is unacceptable and removing the votes or suggesting that the closer can ignore them does not make it any less so. --YFB ¿ 23:54, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have replied on my talk page, to avoid having a split discussion. -YFB ¿ 01:42, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- In case you've missed my edit summary at Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Image:Fieldscape.jpg, I've just noticed that you altered my comment at that nomination. You have been warned several times by various users that changing others' comments and votes is unacceptable. If you persist you may be blocked. --YFB ¿ 01:51, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Salam Arad, I'll answer to your remarks point by point.
- It is clear enough in the map that which parts are gains and losses
but I'll prefer it If you could mention exactly what color is the gains and what color is a loss.
- ok. # The red strips for losses are too thick and looks like a
different country
- I'll try to make it look better, but for now, I'm way to occupied
with fr:Histoire de l'Iran and fr:Femme iranienne being proposed as FA. # What is the FARS Losses and Gains means on the bottom?
- that's a mistake. should be "iranian provinces in 1900"
- What does the blue "flè
sches" means? the
British attacks?
- yep. I could add it. # Some dates (Obviously important events) are
not explained in the legend.
- I think we can't put all the data in the map. dates should be
explained in the article. (turkmanchai Treaty, golestan treaty...)
- It's also a good idea to see the Russian Empire in the north (if that
doesn't ruin the map)
- Russian empire is delimited by the red line, as specified in the
legend. I think it'd ruin the map a little. I prefer to leave it like that. (the card is inspired from a famous french atlas, Atlas Duby; I think they've thought on it long enough. I'm now working on making some articles a FA status, and giving the fr:Portail:Iran complete contents. If you have any remarks to do on the portal, i'd be happy to hear them.

Hello Arad
[edit]I also wanted to ask if you wouldn't mind if I used your format for a personal page - You style is great, and if you wouldn't mind it would make my life very easy.
Also, do you know why, when I sign my comments, they are not followed by the (UTC) time and date stanp like everyone elses? I'm a bit puzzled.
Thanks for you contributions, JohnKolter
User page formatting
[edit]Hi Arad. Just so you know, your user page images aren't displaying properly in Firefox; the Montreal pano overlaps the Ground Squirrel image and the two images from your 'My fields of interest' section are floating on top of other things much further down the page. Also, don't you think it rather devalues having a Barnstar if you had to ask for it? I'm sure it must be much more satisfying to be pleasantly surprised by an award that someone left you, because they were inspired to do so by the quality of your editing. --YFB ¿ 20:10, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- The images at the bottom are fine now, and I think that layout is an improvement anyway as it means the page will look better to people viewing it at lower resolutions. The earth picture is still floating on top of one of your galleries though. As for 'watching everything you do', no, I have rather better things to do with my time, but it just happened that I got an edit conflict with you when I was (belatedly) replying to JohnKolter's "thank you" message on his talk page. --YFB ¿ 21:44, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
All fairness, if Khomeini's photo is removed then Shah's photo also meets the same criteria as he is also hated by millions of Iranians. This is a encyclopaedia and we have to present all the information. Siddiqui 22:22, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- I have many dear Iranians friends. Many also blame Shah's autocratic rule that resulted in rise of Khomeini. In all fairness, whether we like it or not, Khomeini will be mentioned in Iranian history for a long long time.
- Siddiqui 22:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- That's fine. Truth should not be casualty.

From Gligan
[edit]Hello, Arad. I have a question: do you and the Iranians consider themselves as Persians and Iran as Persia?? I personally think so, but i want to know the opinion of the Persians themselves. Iran is the same state as Persia of Darius I or Cyres the Great, right? (modern greece for example has nothing to do with ancient greece, exept for sharing one and the same territory), I hope that with Persia things are different. --Gligan 22:23, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- Greetings! It was very interesting to learn what you wrote. I thought that the Persians called their state "Fars"; now I understand (with pleasure) that Iran in Persian is Persia. The example with Germany is very good. I may comment a lot and have many quetions coserning Persia but now i will ask you two questions: 1)May I consider the Parthian Empire as Persia or the Sassanids restored the country? 2) Do you support the restoration of the monarchy in Persia (as do I)? I think that such ancient and proud Empires such as our states should return to monarchy; to my mind the republics are states without significant history (the African states, usa, romania, greece...). --Gligan 11:48, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Battle of Thermopylae vandalism
[edit]Hello Mr. Arad. I see you have long Wiki pedigree. Nevertheless I suggest that you leave the Battle of Thermopylae article up to others as you obviously can't achieve an unbiased view there. For one thing there was nothing gentlemanly about Xerxes. Before he left Turkey one of his conscript's fathers asked that his son be left behind and not have to go. Xerxes agreed and had the lad divided to that the army would march out between the halves. You know, you don't have to defend every Iranian that ever lived just because you happen to be Iranian. Xerxes did not bury the Greeks with honor on the hill. The Greeks did that. Moreover the sources are not suspect. Things probably happened pretty much the way the sources said. If they did not, I would like to know just how YOU would know, as they are the only sources?
What you are really trying to do is make the ancient Iranians look good by distorting history. Excuse me, let the Greeks have their day in history, will you? Not every Iranian has behaved well in history. Moreover, Mr. Arad, you stand out like a sore thumb. Everyone knows the story of Thermopylae and knows that there is something wrong with the things you are trying to say there. Just leave it be, will you? Or is it possible you do not understand that western historians are trying to be scientific and objective and think that history is for propaganda? Next time you put your erroneous comments in there I am going to start throwing templates at it. Then you can answer everyone.Dave 05:08, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- No, I don't trust bullshit movies. But, I don't trust ethnic or nationalistic bullshit either. It happens from time to time that other nationals suffering culture shock or not really free to speak feel they have to present what to us is a biased view; i.e., to rewrite history their own way. Wikipedia is the product of free speech. We value it highly though we do not always live up to it.
- What I objected to in the article is two things. First, it was implied or even at first nearly stated that Xerxes out of the goodness of his heart returned the body of Leonidas to the Greeks after 40 years, as though he had generously kept it buried in an Iranian cemetary or had it under Iranian control. When I scotched that the next alteration implied that Xerxes generously buried the brave dead under a mound including Leonidas. There is nothing at all to support those views. As far as can be discerned from the text he left them all on the field with the headless Leonidas hanging from a cross. Second, you keep casting aspersions on the reliability of the Greek sources, presumably Herodotus. Now, we know Herodotus was not a perfect historian. But, your point of view pretends to have knowledge by which you judge the Greek sources unreliable. That is pure bunk. You do not have such knowledge, nor does anyone. The Greek sources are all we have, my friend. On what basis do YOU judge them unreliable? But I didn't like that paragraph of yours anyway. It contains a value judgement, that the Greeks did the Persians some serious damage at Thermopylae. I don't see that. They still invaded Athens with overwhelming force. The Athenians were forced to evacuate the city. The Persians were defeated on a technicality: the Greeks were the better seamen. All I'm saying is, we don't need any Iranian editorializing here. The story is simple and stands by itself. You made your point about the Iranian value system and backed it up with a source, which I checked. I left it. Let's leave it at that, shall we? You may think Xerxes a gentleman. Who cares? This is not about what you or anyone else thinks of Xerxes. This is an attempted professional article about the battle.
- Well I hope I have answered you sufficiently. By the way, I'm not angry. Only emphatic. The only objective should be getting the truth across. I'm sure you don't like it that Iran and the states are not on the best terms. Neither do I, but that has not a thing at all to do with it. Sooner or later I'll be taking on more articles that have to do with Iran so you might as well get used to me. Truth is the objective. That is not always, sometimes not often, allowed, but in encyclopedias it is an objective. We don't need any more propaganda, we got enough already.Dave 02:37, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Merry Christmas!
[edit]I notice you have this image on your user page. Unfortunately, due to a licensing issue it must be deleted from Wikipedia, so I've had to remove it. See Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Notre dame basillica delist for an explanation of the issue. I really hate having to do this, as this image was my favourite of all images I've seen on Wikipedia, but that's the way it has to be I'm afraid. Raven4x4x 11:21, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Damavand Picture on My Page
[edit]Arad,
Thanks for the note. The "unverified" tag remained from previous edit. My apologies for that. I have edited that out and now it should be ok.
Thanks also for providing such a beautiful picture of Damavand. It is really beautiful and magnificent.
Cheers,

Two Articles in need of your attention
[edit]There are two entries at Wikipedia, which have falsely created -- they are Turco-Persian and Turko-Persian Tradition. Both entries are factitious. I have requested the entries to be deleted. My reasons are:
- The term Turko-Persian Tradition (or Turco-Persian) does not exists academically and it is a factitious entry! Check the Encyclopaedia Iranica to confirm -- The correct name for that culture is the Persianate culture not the "Turko-Persian". Turkophones (mostly of mixed race and Persianized in culture) only spoke in Turkic dialects and were in the military. That is not enough participation in creating and forming the culture to deserve the name "Turko-Persian Tradition" – This is misinformation. All the elements in that area, which have to do with tradition and culture, were drawn from the Iranian culture (Persian, Kurdish, Azari, Baluchi, Tajik, Luri, Gilaki, Talishi, Mazandarani, etc.), and the Islamic faith, not much Turkic elements (like shamanism, yurts etc.) were incorporated in. That is what makes the name "Turko-Persian" an imaginary one and therefore the entry should be deleted.
Any contributions would greatly appreciated. Bā Sepās Surena 02:11, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

In middle east, India and Pakistan Nahid is used as a "female name" :). But in Bangladesh it's used as a "male name" :). I've big interest in Iran and after my own it's my favourite country. I wish one day I could visit this country. However nice to meet you. Anahita 2007-08-02

Documentary
[edit]Sorry, but I had to remove your link to the documentary on the talk page for Iran. You really aren't supposed to put ads there, nor are you supposed to put links to illegal sites. I'm sure it is a good documentary but it wasn't appropriate to put on the page. The Behnam 07:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Your edit to 300 (film)
[edit]Please do not add information lacks citation; this is a violation of Wikipedia's no original research policy. In addition, this does not mean citations about the actual battle of Thermopylae are not acceptable; this is synthesizing. There must be citation provided of direct criticism of the film in terms of its historical inaccuracies. —Erik (talk • contrib • review) - 22:53, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
