Look at WP:REFERENCES. Basically, you can use <ref>the thing you're referencing</ref> and then add {{reflist}} somewhere, which will show up the footnotes. Tombomp (talk/contribs) 07:16, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problems, Archaeochica. To add to what Tombomp says about referencing styles, on wikipedia there are several in common use, which one is selected is not so important as having a consistent referencing style within an article itself.

As it happens, for many Mesoamerica-related articles we have tended to use the style we call "shortened notes", you can see this system explained under the relevant section by following this link: WP:CITESHORT. In a nutshell, to cite some given statement you place the abbreviated cite between <ref> </ref> tags after the punctuation concluding the statement:

..a handful of women are depicted on monuments taking on roles and titles that would otherwise be reserved only for men.<ref>Miller & Martin 2004, p.123</ref>

This will display as an auto-generated sequential superscript number in the text, and the shortened cite itself will appear in the list generated towards the end of the article by the {{reflist}} template located in a section called "Notes" or similar. You'd also add the full expansion of the reference under the following "References" section, bibliography-style; so something like:

Miller, Mary (2004). Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya. London: Thames & Hudson. ISBN 0-500-05129-1. OCLC 54799516. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |coauthors= ignored (|author= suggested) (help)

would appear. At least, that's the theory, not all Mesoam. articles presently follow this scheme, and it's not a mandated style (just so long as there is some citation method). Some questions[edit]

{{helpme}} Sorry, there are three questions: 1. I am working on an entry on the topic of Ruling Queens and I have come across some different name spellings in two very recent publications for one of the Queens of Yaxchilan--Lady K'abal Xook. For my entry, which will be a stand alone page, I am inclined to use that of Martin and Grube 2008 in their Chronicle of Maya Queens and Kings, however Josserand's publication of 2007 (The Missing Heir at Yaxchilan: Literary Analysis of a Maya Historical Puzzle, In Latin American Antiquity vol 18(3) p 295-312) has the name as Lady Xok. Additionally, the existing Wikipedia page on this queen has it written as Lady Xoc. So what to do?

2. This one is a question/note is with regard to the existing Lady Xoc page, it is in some need of updating, clarifying and correcting of the existing text, which I can do as I have time but I wanted to check first before re-writing parts.

3. Still having a problem with the formating of references. I've tried with what I have on my user page but it's not right yet and I don't know what I am doing wrong. Thanks Archaeochica (talk) 05:08, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1.) It would be best to use a standardized spelling across the board- whichever one is better referenced should be used in both. So, if you think your reference is better, use your spelling and change the spelling of the other article. It would probably be best if you got consensus on that before you move it- start a discussion on the talk page and see what other people think.

2.) if you're not sure what needs updating, you can always ask on the talk page. Otherwise, be bold and make the changes. People can [and will] always revert your changes if they aren't right.

3.) The {{Cite}} and its derivatives are an easy way to format references. Take a look at this list for an easy guide to using it: Wikipedia:Citation templates, and remember to write <ref></ref> around the template.

Maya names[edit]

Hi there Archaeochica. I've just now (belatedly; apologies) responded to your original enquiries about which form of Maya personage names to use, at Dr. Hoopes' talk page where they were originally made — just follow this link. My responses are from the point of view of conventions within Mesoamerica/Maya articles specifically, which in practice may differ a little from the generic wikipedia conventions. Hope that helps. If any more questions/comments re Mesoamerica/Maya stylings (whether related to your KU assignment or in general), probably the best places to ask would be

at the WikiProject Mesoamerica discussion board WT:MESO, since that is frequently monitored by active project participants and someone should soon turn up to see if they can help out, or
at the talk page accompanying some particular article (eg Talk:Lady Xoc), if query relates to content of the article, or
at the user talk page of one of the currently active meso project members, and/or that of Dr Hoopes (User talk:Hoopes).

References disappeared?[edit]

I am asking because I have added the information boxes and now my references are not showing on on the actual page. Seems it was just a simple typo in the call to the template {{reflist}}, which makes the inline cites/notes display. Also, a closing </ref> tag got dropped somewhere along the way- very easy to do. TenPoundHammer has kindly fixed it, see here.

No, there is no set space limitation for any page, only limitations for page size are practical ones, for readibility (recommended say 30 to 50 KB of prose, though can easily go over), and display/loading times. Most pages/articles shld be kept under about say 90-100 KB.

Just a quick wikipedia styling pointer- in articles, we typically avoid the use of 1st- and 2nd-person address, with some exceptions - see here. Regards, --cjllw ʘ TALK 23:58, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need to publish this page[edit]

In a word, yes. Before you do so, remove the self-referential notes, i.e., where you state "Hi! I'm a grad student in archaeology..." Also, once you move it, your user page will automatically become a redirect to the article. After the move you should either edit it to say something else making it no longer a redirect, or place {{db-user}} on it to have it deleted. It will be freed up. All you have to do is edit the resulting redirect in your user page after the move to make it no longer a redirect. However, I would suggest that if you are going to use your user page in this same manner again, it would be better to have it deleted after the move using {{db-user}} because then it won't have the redirect in its page history as the first edit of the new article you create. Once deleted, it will become a red link and you can simply create your user page again. However, I would suggest that you not use your user page to construct future articles. Instead, use a subpage. You can create one in your user talk space, or in your user space. All you need to do to create one here, for example, is to type on this page [[/some name]] which will automatically become User talk:Archaeochica/some name. Then create the article in that redlink. The same things applies to your user page, e.g., create a link on it to [[/some name]]. What many users do is create the subpage at the name they will eventually move the article under construction to. e.g., if you had created the article you are presently working on as a subpage of this, your talk page, a good name would have been /Ruling Queens in Ancient Maya Society during the Classic Period. ← (if you click on this you'll see that it automatically is a page in your user talk space). You create a sub page by creating the link (for example, I want to create a sub page called User:ZooFari/My articles. I simply create a link using the brackets [[ ]] like this: [[User:ZooFari/My articles]] which will then create a red link like this: User:ZooFari/My articles. I would then click on the red link and edit the page, creating a new sub page from my user page. Does that help? Zoo Fari 00:47, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you created the image yourself, choose a free license from the list at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#For image creators, and put that tag on the bottom of the image's page. If the image has been tagged to say it doesn't have any copyright status, remove that template when you add the new license. Please let me know if there are any more questions.
