Distance measurement

No, it's apparently real. I found it in one of Cecil Adams' Straight Dope books, but offhand I can't remember which one. I haven't found it anywhere else, but I trust Adam's works, he's a true "know it all"!

Sajid Rashid/WorldCat

Hmmm...the "Open WorldCat" idea doesn't seem to be comprehensive. I access the subscription-based version through either my public library (or university)...they subscribe to various databases and allow patrons (or students) to log in from any computer using their library card number (or student ID). I have made some comments on the talk page of list of nearest stars, but I just noticed that there are unresolved issues as far back as March 2005 (DENIS 1048-39 a.k.a. (?) DENIS 1048-3956), so I'm not sure that the list is being maintained or the talk page is being monitored by something like this WikiProject.

Thanks for the note. I didn't realise creating stubs could be so complicated. If I understand correctly, I need to be careful if a delete article still has links to it unrelated to the stub articles I want to create. I'm actually not sure whether leaving behind the talk page of a deleted article is the normal procedure. In the case of Henry Peters, maybe (Australian politician) should be kept, since there's apparently a Henry Peters who received a United States Congressional Medal of Honor (the one linked from Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave famous people/P). I looked at what AFDs Eggs has edited, and i'm not familiar with any of the articles. Did you have a reason for connecting me to them? Are you talking about Speedies rather than AfDs? Have you looked at the edit histories of the nominated pages, and perhaps contacted their editors? Or if they are AFDs, have you followed the debate? EGGS probably would have some relevant ideas. I'd need to know more to comment. I don't think we're talking abt "empty" pages lk'd from Template:List of people by name exhaustive page-index (sectioned) (on which i'd be something of an expert), since i see no sign of edits to add Speedy tags to any of them.

Some examples that I have in mind are: Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/9 9 2005 Philadelphia County and other Philadelphia Pages, Wikipedia talk:News sources/Broadcasting/Middle East, and especially Wikipedia:Swedish Wikipedians' notice board/articles in need of attention. I guess you removed those templates because the pages' histories are considered to be worth saving, but if that is the case, then why have they been blanked? _ _ Yes, it's hard to be sure, bcz there's no clear convention about where. In our case, you made a reasonable stab at it, and i knew you'd responded bcz i left you on my Watchlist, so it's working fine.
_ _ OK, those are no longer specifically familiar, but i recall a batch of such circumstances. {{db-empty}} invokes WP:CSD A1 & A3, which are inapplicable to the WP: namespace that these three pages belong to. Even if they were applied to the main namespace, they apply when all revisions of the article meet a criterion, not just bcz somebody blanked it (hence "remember to check ... the page history"), and in at least some of these three cases, a summary actually implies that an old revision had not been "empty" in any of these senses. In general, as you suggest, we save for the sake of the histories; it's not always obvious what other things (of lasting interest) may have an otherwise "dead" page as part of their context; even where "What links here" is empty, someone (with a better memory than mine) may later recall where they read something that made them write something else, and lk to it after the fact to tie their thinking to one of its sources. It would be fine for an admin who did that to also make a decision about reversion to a non-blank revision, and/or converting the page into a set of annotations abt the interesting revisions and "ext lks" to them. But i'd have already been several steps removed from my main WP work, and simply "rescued" them from speedy rather than going still further afield.
_ _ If there's such a thing as a typical admin, it's not me. I'm not so much a mop-&-bucket admin as a paint-scraper one: i probably most often use admin powers to clear a blocked move or to merge articles, where the need arises in the course of "building scaffolding" for the "paint-roller" work i do on the LoPbN tree: Dabs and Wikipedia:Title pairs for future redirects, and increasingly template-writing, are regular venues for me, rather that Recent changes or Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. My interest in those {{db-empty}}s actually stems from my practice of "not-so-speedy" deletion: I'm wrong often enuf about a speedy that i don't execute my own speedies on articles, but just place the tag and let another admin check my judgement. I try to compensate for leaving the decision burden to others, by judging a handful of others' speedy-requests, chosen at random from Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, every time i add to the pool by tagging without deleting. No doubt those three were such cases.

Replacing prod with Move to Wiktionary

Hi. I saw you replaced the prod I placed in Apoth with {{Move to Wiktionary}}. What is the general rule for which should be done? I've seen a lot of dicdefs in WP:PROD but I've also seen Move to Wiktionary a lot too - and I never know why. Thanks.  :) —Wknight94 (talk) 01:57, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

It seems to me that "apoth" is a real word (and not just a neologism), so it should be included in Wiktionary. If prod is left in the article, then the information will be deleted. Ardric47 01:59, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Redundant Category

Andric, Please STOP deleting supercentenarian links. Being listed as a British supercentenarian does NOT re-link the person to the main list. Therefore, listing as both a supercentenarian and British supercentenarian is NOT redundant. Template:Star-planetbox primary, etc

I'll agree there is an argument for standardisation here, but a full-blown template sequence is not the way to do this. I was thinking maybe we could have a template for the header, so you could use, say

isotope-box templates

  • I posted several questions about them, months ago.
  • No comments.
  • A month later I commented out the boxes, put more questions.
  • Still no comments.
  • I asked the box designer or similar for info on how to generate such a template for a given isotope and the meaning of each one of the boxes.
  • The only reply I got was that the only known thing about the template was the template itself.
  • I'll appreciate it if you can replay and explain to me and all other users the questions summarized above and in the talk pages. Since nobody replied in the lapsed months, I assume not many users understand such boxes.

Yes, about the isotopes template. All I and others need to know is how to work out some examples for different types of decay and for stable isotopes. The links don't tell me how to fill in the template that will generate the boxes posted to the articles. IMHO a help file about this is needed. We are not all nuclear physicists. guide not ready

IMHO re-posting those tables now would continue the existing confusion, namely the reason why they were commented out. Please work out some examples so we can understand the meaning and how to read each column and/or row. Otherwise it makes no sense to have a decay chain link to something irrelevant to many of the isotopes in question. ÍMHO only after the guide tells how to read the boxes we might consider a consensus or decide to redesign the template/boxes. I see no urgency since no opinion was posted during several months. I'll draft an example of how I read them so later you can correct them and incorporate an explanation into the guide for, perhaps, a redesigned template. I can't do it immediately. It will be later on tonight. I think that those who don't already know the meaning of the rows and columns are reading them wrongly. The designer should have written a reference guide about the templates. Meanwhile, I can reassure you that they have been of absolute no value to the users of the environmental isotopes info. Isotope pages

Hi there, I've seen you work on the isotope pages. Originally I included only metastable states with half-lives greater than an arbitrary cut-off of 100 ns, which seemed detailed enough for this purpose. Nudat's Levels and Gammas database goes down to picoseconds. You could cross-check this against the Audi data too and document both sources on the talk page, if you want to go the extra way. Anyway, nice to see it's checked by another pair of eyes. Femto 14:19, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: CmdrObot errors

Hi Ardric,

You're quite right: I did misspell "techniques" in my bot's table of corrections. Rather stupid of me; thanks for noticing!

Edits 1 and 3 are entirely human error: there's no easy automatic way to detect what the appropriate correction should be in those cases, and I neglected to catch the errors before I saved those pages.

Edit 4 is an interesting one. I wasn't aware of this use of spaces as sort keys for Category Pages. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll add a special case for this to my link compacting code.

Re: Quotations

Hi Ardric,

I've thought a bit about ignoring stuff in quotations, but due to the freeform nature of wiki markup, and the inconsistent ways people use single quotes, double quotes, the 'proper' left and right hand versions of these, and how all the above interact with apostrophes, spacing, parentheses, punctuation etc, it's actually surprisingly difficult to recognise what's quoted and what's not.

In any event, I have the feeling that even if I did get this right, I'd miss out quite a lot text that should legitimately be corrected; and while the combo of my bot and I do generate some false positives, it's quite low compared to the number of corrections I've done.

On the other hand, if you've any suggestions, I'd be interested to hear them.

Oh okay. Now I know what you mean. I did use a modified substed version. I had forgotten, sorry for being so defensive on my end. Here's the answer to your first question:
I wanted to merge them to a yet to be created article. Instead of creating a talk page for the nonexistent article, I changed the link to point to a user subpage of the same name. That way the discussion would stay in my user space until some kind of feedback and discussion had occurred. If consensus seemed to be to merge them, then I would move the discussion to the new article's talk page. I can see how it would be confusing otherwise. Hiya You reverted my linking of Pete Ashton's name to his user account. But they are the same person, and Ashton, while notable on the small press scene of the time, doesn't warrant his own article. Prod removals

Ardric47, your recent removal of my prods on call gate and bleah for the reason of not having been transwikied (I assume this was the reason for the latter, although this was not specifically stated) seem to suggest that you might have been looking for the transwikied dictionary definitions in Wiktionary's main namespace, instead of the Transwiki: pseudo-namespace, where meta dictates they should be copied. If you look closely, I think you'll find that both articles have already been transwikied, to wikt:Transwiki:Call gate and wikt:Transwiki:Bleah, their edit histories copied to their respective talk pages, and the transfers logged on transwiki logs for both Wiktionary and Wikipedia. After something has been moved to Transwiki namespace in Wiktionary, it is Wiktionary's responsibility to decide what to do with it. Wiktionary may even delete it, in fact, so waiting for the transwikied content to show up on Wiktionary's mainspace may in fact be futile. TheProject 01:09, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Former Userbox redirect deletion

Please, when adding delete tags to redirects of former userboxes, use <noinclude>{{db-r1}}</noinclude> so the deletion notice doesn't appear on the userpages of those who once had the userboxes. I fixed those you already did. Thanks. Timrem 05:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I noticed an unusually high number of Userpages nominated for speedy deletion, then figured out that it was because of the userbox redirects. I guess they weren't right in the TfD discussions when they claimed no one would lose their userboxes, because the people using redirects obviously didn't get the content substed. Fact template null edit

I'm not all that sure. I noticed that I had dropped a <span> tag, and wanted to fix it up. Unfortunately, the page was truncated after saving the minor edit. Concluding that I had uncovered a bug, I reverted my edit by editing and saving the previous version as a null edit of sorts. I really want to close that tag, but I suspect whenever I do the page'll gum up. (This also happened earlier, when editing Shadow the Hedgehog and I had to immediately remove my own edit with a previous version and add it back in and restore a previous edit too.) Note that I am using Firefox 1.5.0.2; I thought wikipedia had squished this bug ages ago. --DavidHOzAu 01:17, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I saw that you are also interested in the userbox issue. We decided to sidestep the current deadlock in policy-making and are starting to implement the German solution to the userbox issue, as suggested/mentioned by Jimbo. Well into a back-and-forth offshoot from a very volatile discussion, I attempt to inject a little levity, and you take it as "glee"? May I gleefully respond that you're 100% wrong? With every respect, there is and was no "glee" from this—or anything else, for that matter—in my view, the subject is unremitting and unapologetic in his view that he is right, save all else, Wikipedia included. speedy deletion

Hi I nominated an article for speedy deletion and you wrote here that it didn't constitute "patent nonsense". I'm new to the whole speedy deletion thing and I guess I didn't know what was meant by "patent nonsense". I labeled two articles by the same editor as such because they were fake biography pages that listed fake accomplishments. Questions About "Moving Up" the Food Chain in Wiki

I see people thanking "higher ups" for new so-called wiki powers. What are they talking about? I'd like to get promoted if that would help in how and what I can contribute. Don't know much about the wiki "pecking order." What I do know is that I have an excellent command of the English language and a good background in history and am wondering what that means as far as moving up the proverbial food chain. Also, I have contributed a number of entirely new articles on a number of topics and individuals of interest. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion

Hi there. I was wondering if I could ask you to elaborate on, or reconsider your comments on the Community Portal subpages currently listed at MfD.

Pages like Wikipedia:Community Portal/Menu are not used anywhere, except in the other items that are listed for MfD. See the thread at Wikipedia talk:Community Portal#Orphaned subpage.

The designs as a whole are already archived at the creator's subpage User:Go for it!/Draft, and in his latest creation at Wikipedia:Department directory. Clearing these old and unused templates will help ease the maintenance of the CP. Thanks. -Quiddity 01:35, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

List of Araneidae species

hi,

i just noticed that you split up the List of Araneidae species and relinked the referring pages. I think that's probably not a bad idea for several of the longer family lists (check out List of Salticidae species and you'll know what I mean) :) The thing is that these lists are more or less automatically generated, and in order not to mess the changed system up at the next update, it would be best if we coordinate things like this with the Wikiproject Spiders. We just started, you're very welcome to help :)

My first impulse was to ask you to consider Wikipedia:Deletion review, but after reviewing the extensive page history of Barbara and Jenna Bush, concerns about the GFDL brought up in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Barbara and Jenna Bush, and the fact that even Jenna and Barbara Bush redirects to Bush family, I've restored the article and turned it into a redirect. You can see more about this here. The vote is not expected to be a thriller or anything; the Project only wishes to get rid of a redundant template.

Basically, I am afraid you should visit the Project's talk page more often; there are several issues that need to be dealt with. Right now it seems to be forgotten by almost all members of the Project.

Also, there is a working version of the /Guidelines subpage at User:The Duke of Waltham/SBS and any input, either a good idea or a simple comment, would be greatly appreciated.
