I do feel the task less daunting if I have less red links to work with -I'm working on a period at a time e.g I am now working on late 1930s Argentine films. Each stub has the link and info box laid out and is categorized. THe next step will be to add cast and crew details and images like I have done to Los Caranchos de la Florida and Loco lindo. Then at a later date I hope the plot can be written in full into full length quality articles. The task is so enormous to cover world films!! that this way of doing it seems better for me. I'm new as an editor (you knew that), but I've been interested in WikiP for ages. Can you tell me, or link me, so that I might understand what your role is? I mean, I get it to some extent... you're a shepherd for new editors like me. (I'm a systems guy, you can get as technical as you like in your response.) I've read your suggestions and your talk page and it's all been very helpful and informative. But what I'm missing is: What are your "magical powers", for (horrid) lack of a better metaphor. Do you have an assigned area of topics/interests? When and how did I show up on your radar so you could observe and help me? Was it when I entered your "airspace" by working on the Sneakers article?

Apex Clubs of Australia

The original content was inaccurate in that it used an old logo and did not contain a proper explanation of our ideals. It also stated that Clubs could select their gender mix. That is no longer the case and clubs can no longer dictate that they have a particular gender specification.

I will give another stab at adding salient material that does not offend, but not for a few days. I can see that one of our Youth Club members has added some material.

So, the default sort template you tagged my userpage with is what allows categories to assort pages via a default, rather than requiring [[Category:Whatever|Lastname, first]] as it used to be? I had heard that categories were default sorting, but I didn't know the mechanism. Am I groking it? Is there a Help page I can reference to clear things up? --mordicai. 21:40, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

  • If you put [[Category:Whatever]] it will sort you under U for User:Mordicai.
  • If you put [[Category:Whatever|Mordicai]] it will sort you under M for Mordicai.
  • {{DEFAULTSORT:{{PAGENAME}}}} just makes it so you don't have to put your name in every category. It changes the default sorting name from User:Mordicai to Mordicai.

Yes, perfectly. As I said, I had heard that such a thing was the case, but not the mechanism of it. Just someone telling me that separating Lastname, firstname after the | wasn't necessary any longer. Good to have it cleared up. Reverting

Hi, i noticed you reverted User:Geldo49's edit on Lü Bu at 23:21, 29 April 2007. i fully applaud your vigilance but i thought i'd just give you a gentle reminder to be more thorough when reverting. In the above case, Geldo49 made multiple edits in succession. Hence Undo will only revert his very last edit. i don't think he meant to vandalize, but i seem to notice an increasing number of vandals make multiple edits nowadays. Actually, I didn't think he was vandalizing at all and I'm still not positive he was. His edits are all unsourced, but not obvious vandalism. I saw Gelado49's multiple edits in succession before I used the Undo operation. I thought he knew the guy's birth year and he knew the guy died at the age of 43. I reverted the "He was only the age of 43" because it was unnecessary given the fact that 43 is a perfectly normal age to die at. When I revert vandalism I always label it as such. Kantoku follow-up

I'm not sure how this works. If you check out Japanese era names, you will see anomolies in the transfer of data from the Japanese Wikipedia to the English Wikipedia. Asit happens, there are quite a few era names (nengō in Japanese) which are not appropriately converted into an english Wikipedia article, as evidenced by red lettering rather than blue lettering. I was in the process of trying to modify another era name page as a template for one of the blanks ... and I guess you suggested that my effort should be deleted immediately. I guess if I had simply put {{hang on}} at the top of the text, it would have avoided this trivial problem? Should I insert this "hang-on" notice as a matter-of-course when I'm attending to the Japanese era names which are still in red lettering?

In a separate matter, I encountered messages telling me that I'd uploaded images without appropriate identification ... and when I attempted to respond with an inquiry, I encountered something which led me here -- nothing to do with images posted on the "Isaac Titsingh" page or elsewhere. So, I think I'm responding in a timely manner ... but I must say that, for me, this is pretty much of a shot in the dark ...? Qu'est-ce qu'on peut faire? To answer your first paragraph: You had put "This is the first step of a stub." on a page with no further context. In other words, there wasn't much there for me to read. I figured you might be working on the page, but I couldn't be sure. Instead of putting such a short page like that and adding to it, try putting something in your user name-space, like here: User:Ooperhoofd/Testing. You can put articles you are working on there. Then, when you've got the page ready for prime time, you can move the page to the main article name-space where other people will begin adding onto your work. Look at WP:FIRST for more information on creating articles.
To answer your second paragraph: I don't know what "Qu'est-ce qu'on peut faire" means. I didn't put the image upload messages on your talk page, however, I'm happy to help. IF all of your images were from the NYPL, then you can probably put {{subst:attribution|NYPL}} on each of the images: Image:Caron1663.jpg Image:Deshima 1852.jpg (the Ackerman image was already fixed by someone else). ~a (user • talk • contribs) 00:34, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

And actually, only 4 out of the 9 pages I edited were adding external links (and not just to DaveSource). I *have* added content, and some content I have linked. From "WP:EL":

I am unwilling to maintain, for example, my documentation on how to convert a big diesel to WVO on the Wikipedia site. So I am unwilling to integrate that into Wikipedia due to copyright issues (not to mention that it is arguably at a level of detail that steps outside of Wikipedia's scope).

Not everyone can write encyclopedic articles. That doesn't mean we can't contribute to making Wikipedia a useful information source. Pizza Delivery picture

If I understand, you reverted a picture on the pizza delivery page because the phone number is visible...a reasonable idea, I guess.

However, reverting does not help. The phone number is still there, and if you click on the image you will see it. I did not add the phone number, it is in the original. All I did was download the image and blow up the sign part, which anyone can do.

I think you should put it back.

Hi there. Thanks for helping. My frustration level is growing. This user seems to have formed the opinion that I'm evil and should be banished from Wikipedia. He seems to refuse any attempts on my part to demonstrate otherwise. *sigh* I'm afraid that if I continue having only 1 on 1 interaction with him that I'm going to lose my cool and say something that I will need to apologize for. I do have a mediation case open at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2007-03-28 Guru Gita and you could post the description there. This mediation case is the less formal type of mediation. A request for comment might also help, but my understanding is that we usually put them on specific article talk pages or on user pages. Any ideas where a RFC might best be placed? Thanks for becoming involved. I sincerely hope that this issue will get resolved quickly and to everyone's benefit. BTW, currently I plan to not respond to Ganesham's comments on the admin noticeboard. I would prefer to respond to his comments when he chooses mediation. What do you think about this approach? Thanks again. I think the crux of my frustration is that the Mediation case has been open since March, Ganesham was politely notified of the mediation, by both myself and the mediator, yet he has not once responded on that mediation page. My solo attempts to encourage him to participate seem to have been met with deaf ears. I am so to speak, at wit's end. To me, his current response on the incident report could possibly sidetrack my concerns here; instead of participating in informal mediation he seems to wish to discuss more allegations. I have no problem with that, although I believe that a discussion of these new allegations does not belong on the incident report. I am afraid that we will not resolve the previous issues. He accuses me of using Wikipedia as a means of continuing a personal vendetta against some poor soul. I would never do something so morally reprehensible as using Wikipedia to defame, denigrate and abuse a fellow human being. He simply sees me as a guilty man attempting to hide his actions rather than an innocent man attempting to clear his name. My best recourse, is to trust the community by continually seeking 3rd opinions and showing good faith in attempting to address his concerns. I truly felt uncomfortable filing a report, since it represented a failure to resolve these concerns amicably. I only did so on the advice of another editor who responded to a helpme request. An incident report should have been the last resort, and I'm left wondering if I could've/should've done more before filing it. Nope. I think you did the right thing. This guy is pestering you and he's not responding to WP:MEDCAB. The administrators on the noticeboard haven't had any helpful suggestions yet but that's fine. Post something on my talk page if you end up opening some new dispute resolution thing. And . . . don't worry too much about "clearing" your name. I agree that it has "duplicate content" with 20-20-20 Club AND I agree that it should be deleted according to policy. When I first edited the article in question I didn't read the 20-20-20 Club article. My question is this, how exactly does WP:OWN come into play? Hmmm. That's a good question. It's certainly overly grandiose about its description of things. And it's missing references to reliable sources. And it's trivia is completely dumb. I see a fair number of relevant and real google hits for the theater. I think the article probably should exist, but with 90% of the crap material stripped out. well, i think it was created by the theatre staff since the text is a direct copy. if you look at the talk page, one of the staff members has posted his contact info which is why i figured it might fall under blatant advertising. i figured you know the wiki rules much better than me. :) stolenbyme 23:05, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Warning recieved

Hi Arichnad,

I see you placed a warning on my talk page regarding the lack of explanation i leave on user pages why i revert edits they made. 99% of the revision i make are to get swear words out of articles. Now call me crazy, but if someone places swear words in a text they know very well that what they are doing is wrong. I doubt leaving these users a message is going to change their behaviour, and frankly, seeing the huge amount of vandalism, i think i can better spend my time on more meaningfull things :)

In case you are refering to a specific case (Perhaps i made a mistake reverting?) please tell me which one you are refering to. I made over 200 vandalism reverts today, so its quite hard for me to guess which one you are talking about.

It's not exactly a warning. It's a note about warnings. I wasn't sure if I should use the template or leave a message of my own, I hope you don't mind. To be clear, I wasn't talking about a mistake you made; you've made no error.
Leaving vandals a message almost always works. It's very rare that a vandal doesn't stop (or get bored) before the fourth message. What's more, in the cases the vandal doesn't stop, WP:AIV can only go forward if the warnings are there. ~a (user • talk • contribs) 15:09, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

utc clock.js

Just found out about your UTC extension, and installed it right away. Thanks so far, and it's working great! However, I noticed that it displays "2 23:12", where 2 probably stands for December 2. Is there a way to alternatively display it as e.g. "12-02 23:12"? Also, I stumbled upon this at WT:EA, where J-stan had asked a related question about UTC clock and archiving. Hello. I figured that I would know the month and year. Anyways, you can use "utc clock with month.js" now instead of "utc clock.js". I'm not sure why he needed the UTC time to archive, sorry. Could use some help with Kaplan University page. User User:KAPLAD keeps removing any information they don't like, removes sourced information, reverts without explanation. I was in Las Vegas, Nevada last week. I have that article on my watchlist. I'll try to keep an eye out for it. If you see violation of NPOV or conflict of interest then use {{subst:uw-npov2|Article name}} only once. Mention in your edit summary that the editor was violating COI and NPOV. Yep. The Valley News and Greensheet pic referred to in the article, and a newsletter from The North Valley Clown Alley (but it's anecdotal, based on an interview with Terry and George. I'm trying to get a copy of the Cavalcade of Clowns article that mentions it. I've seen (1980) the original costume as well.

The information at George Voorhis is IMO pure bs, see the reference, it's not a reference at all. I knew George and Terry and am certain that George's last name was not spelled with an 'i', and equally certain of the chronology. Willard came after George.

McDonalds may wish to change history, but the newspaper clearly shows Voorhees wearing the prototype costume, very plainly it was assembled hurriedly for the first performance, the hat, nose, and french-fry bag pockets are all actual items straight from McDonalds (the french fry bag pockets are actual french fry bags).

Willard Scott's claim is either an error or outright prevarication. It seems possible that MacDonalds themselves aren't presently aware of the origin of Ronald. I tend to doubt that, as (in the 60's) an agency hired by them actually sued George Voorhees to 'cease and desist' portraying Ronald, even though he only ever portrayed the character for MacDonalds. Terry Teene performed as R.M. as well (and prior to the 3 Scott tv spots), but I don't have documentation for that, it would be WP:OR to mention it at this point. Hey, way back in May, you left a note for User:Azparkranger about using copyrighted information in the article Sweeney Ridge. I'm not sure if you know this, but information from the national park ranger's site is public domain -- they are employees of the US government and any work they produce is free for use by anyone. He was a bit worried that he might get in trouble if he used any more of the information from the website or other materials he produces while on the job, so I told him I'd leave a message explaining the situation.
