London Meetup - January 12, 2008

Hi! There's going to be a London Wikipedia Meetup coming Saturday January 12, 2008. If you are interested in coming along take part in the discussion over a Wikipedia:Meetup/London7. The discussion is going on until tomorrow evening and the official location and time will be published at the same page late Thursday or early Friday. Hope to see you Saturday, Poeloq (talk) 01:29, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Please help

I'm sorry for writing this on your page but I don't know where else I could put it. You banned me back in February (or at least banned this IP address) for vandalizing an article. I just came on today for the first time in months to look something up, and was surprised to see that message. It's surprising to me because I have never vandalized that page, and frankly never even been to it. I've also been warned before for vandalizing pages I've never even been to... how is this possible? Is it possible someone else out there has the same IP address as me? No one else have access to this computer but me, and I've never vandalized pages on wikipidia... I have better things to do. Can you explain what is going on? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.204.140.121 (talk) 04:04, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Nobody's saying your are personally responsible for vandalism but there's never a guarantee that your IP address is only ever yours. It's best to set up a WP account then as it's password protected any edits are pretty reliably traceable as yours (even if you stay completely anonymous).—Ash (talk) 07:35, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Hemingway diabetic?

Can you provide supporting info on this? I know his father was but I have not heard of Hemingway being diabetic. Thanks. -Alcmaeonid (talk) 16:51, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

The Q&A video is cited. I'm not in L.A. at the moment so I can't get the exact quote. It's something very near what's printed there. Robert K S (talk) 16:52, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:TalkTalk Free Broadband logo.png

Thanks for uploading Image:TalkTalk Free Broadband logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians who use an iPhone

I have speedy deleted a category you created, Category:Wikipedians who use an iPhone, as a substantially similar recreation of previously deleted material. Please see Wikipedia:User categories for discussion/Archive/June 2007#Category:Wikipedians with iPhones. Thanks for understanding! VegaDark (talk) 23:08, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I've also speedy deleted Category:Wikipedians who use a Dvorak keyboard per Wikipedia:User categories for discussion/Archive/June 2007#Category:Wikipedians by keyboard. I'd recommend you take a look at Wikipedia:User categories for discussion/Archive/Topical index before creating any more user categories, as several of the other categories you recently created look like they will likely be deleted based on past precedent listed there. Your use of Image:Torchwood logo.svg in Torchwood user box

I'm not sure if you are aware, but Wikipedia has a policy that does not allow the use of non-free images outside article space. Your userbox at User:Ash/Userboxes/Torchwood does contain a non-free image, namely Image:Torchwood logo.svg. I am going to have to ask you to remove the image. Thank you. EdokterTalk 01:50, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Changed to some fancy text that is similar to the Torchwood titles.--Ash (talk) 15:08, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Leaving in an unsourced statement...

I reverted an edit you made, that removed an unsourced statement. I did this because it looked like you had added a "Need's citation" tag literally one minute before deleting it. If this is close to the truth, then I ask that you leave it in for, say, two weeks, and then delete it. In order to allow someone to possibly find a citation. If I am in error, or you wish to delete it immediatly, I ask that you first talk to me on my userpage, or this page, or on the talkpage for the article before re-deleting it. Kairos (talk) 12:53, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism

Re. Freeganism, I did not vandalize the page; I merely added some realism, and provided a counter-point to the Freegan's completely biased point of view. They are basically parasites, feeding off capitalist society. --195.137.105.1 22:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Teeline

Your recent edit to User:Paddles/Userbox/Teeline was to remove the category Category:Wikipedians interested in shorthand with the justification that this had been concluded on Wikipedia:User_categories_for_discussion, however the discussion was has only dealt with Category:Wikipedians interested in Teeline shorthand and the creation of the wider category Category:Wikipedians interested in shorthand was in response. I have reverted your edit to this particular userbox on that basis. Ash (talk) 08:29, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the note. And yes, that was an accidental error. A single word (or lack of it) makes all the difference : ) - Thank you for bringing it to my attention. - jc37 19:38, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Peter Tatchell (Political timeline), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Peter Tatchell (Political timeline). Was the intent to help limit the size of the main article? If so I applaud finding some solutions but I don't think this was it. Benjiboi 19:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Boyz cover issue 802.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Boyz cover issue 802.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:14, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Request for Comment and Expansion of Syngas Fermentation Article

Hi Ash,

I have been writing an article about a part of Wikiproject Energy Development, and I need comments and expansions in terms of the article. Could you please get a chance, and look at the article. If you can try your best, I would really appreciate for that.

Thanks

Block request declined

Thank you for your help in fighting vandalism. Unfortunately I am forced to decline your request to have 86.2.209.35 (talk · contribs) blocked [1] because this IP's last edit was 13 days ago. When making reports to WP:AIV, please keep criteria #2 in mind: "the vandal must be active now." Thanks again for helping contain vandalism. --Kralizec! (talk) 15:42, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Template:User car-free

Template:User car-free, a page you created, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Template:User car-free and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Template:User car-free during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.--DieWeisseRose (talk) 06:17, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Your POV pushing on the above list article is quite stunning - first claiming that those who you do not wish to appear on the list must have sources with specific wording; then insisting that those who you approve of do not need to have a source in the article at all. It is rare that I have seen such bald POV pushing and I encourage you to review the guidelines and policies that I have listed on the talk page. After review, please take appropriate action such as providing the sources that you claim exist on other pages, or reverting to the version where non-sourced material has been appropriately removed per WP:V. Lasalle202 (talk) 00:24, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm rarely called stunning. In return I hope you take time to understand my response on the discussion page. If you still think I'm wrong perhaps you can quote the specific part of WP guidance that supports your view that citations must be duplicated from other pages from wikipedia rather than linking to the existing wikipage. BTW most folks don't consider undoing incorrect changes pushing a POV.—Ash (talk) 07:42, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
My position again, is WP:LIST#Listed items: "Lists, whether they are embedded lists or stand-alone lists, are encyclopedic content as are paragraphs and articles, and they are equally subject to Wikipedia's content policies such as Verifiability, No original research, Neutral point of view, and others." (emph added) We then look at Wikipedia Policy: Verifiability: " Editors should provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is challenged or is likely to be challenged, or the material may be removed." (emph added). Your posistion that "verification located in some other article is somehow WP:V -enough'" for material in another article is countered in WP:V#Self-published sources (online and paper): "Articles and posts on Wikipedia may not be used as sources."
As requested repeatedly, please provide sources for the challenged material or revert yourself to the version that does not contain unsourced material.Lasalle202 (talk) 11:32, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Gay bathhouse GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Gay bathhouse and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are several issues that need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool). Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors. I have also left messages on the talk pages of a few other editors and a related WikiProject to spread the workload around some. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 01:20, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Image:Sailors health club.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria.

If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the image can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the image is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the image. If the image has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Sailors health club.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Articles for Deletion

Hi. Your nomination of S3M at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion was incomplete. Although I completed it, it is still missing an explanation from you as to why it should be deleted. Please provide such a rationale at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S3M. Thank you. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 23:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I added a rationale when using TW's Afd feature but the page must have dropped out without updating.—Ash (talk) 07:31, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I was surprised that you voted to remove the software maintenance maturity model. My name is Dr.Pigosky and I wrote the preface of the recent 2008 book published by Wiley on the S3M. I think you should take the time to learn the model and talk to the software maintenance specialist before presenting such a motion. Look at the reference from Ross Gagliano from the ACM on this work also. You should retract this motion. Hello. Just to let you know that (what I suspect to be meatpuppets) have engaged in discussion on the article's AfD page, if you want to participate further. Also, to "Dr. Pigosky", please read this notability guideline. Thanks! - Toon05 17:56, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the warning. I have struck out the meatpuppet comments based on checking the page history. The edits are obviously bogus.—Ash (talk) 23:36, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

I've declined to block this user. The username policy prohibits the impersonation of famous people, but there's no reason to suspect that Dr. Pigosky is (1) famous, or (2) being impersonated here. Users are allowed to use their real names as usernames. (I've also cut & pasted the below comment, in case you didn't get to see it before the report was removed.) sp It is not against policy to use the name of a real notable person if you are that person. This is too complicated to be handled here. Daniel Case (talk) 14:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll keep a watch on this user's activities and follow the WP:SSP process if necessary.—Ash (talk) 16:42, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Edits

Thanks for your note. I added the links to GT and Diva articles because I had been reading about a lot of published market research data that Out Now Consulting had undertaken which was all about the readers of these publications. I thought it could help in guiding others to a related source but can happily live with or without the reference I thought made sense - whichever you prefer is cool to me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.245.59.206 (talk) 22:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ash, sorry about reverting you earlier. I agree with you that the study itself is worth mentioning but the website that happened to be hosting that article was a bit unsavory as far as NPOV is concerned; with this edit I think you've gotten that straightened out. Thanks for going out and finding the better source, —Politizer talk/contribs 18:55, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
