“Chhipa” Hindu – (Namdev):

Chhipa, Chhimpa, Chhimba, Chhipi, Shimpi, Simpi is a community found throughout Indian states in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujrat, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

Hindu Chhipa (Namdev) cast history is deep-rooted and associated with the story of attacks and guillotined of Kshatriya vansh by Parshuram. Parshuram’s attack resulted in fleeing, death and hide of Kshatriya vansh. This is well known fact that King Sahstrabahu’s history and Chhipa cast are related. King Sahstrabhau’s son Shursen surrendered to Parshuram with sword, crown and Kshatriya symbols for self defence and safe guard of dynasty. Renounce of Kshatritya symbols by Shursen and surrender in front of Parshuram forced him to leave catastrophe of Kshatriya vansh. Asylum and hide in temple latter called as “Chhipa” and retention with clothes sell and stitching work. This work tagged and given the name “Chhipa” as cast and the same was approved and followed by the community till now. As per mythology and history, there are five sections as 1. Gehlotika or Gohil 2. Tak Darji Chhipa 3. Bhavsar Chhipa 4. Dilvari Chhipa 5. Rangara or Bandhara Chhipa.

Hans Nirvan Sant Late Shri Mohananandji Maharaj from Beawar (Rajasthan) had mentioned in his hand-written holy book about “Provenance of Namdev Chhipa Cast”. His denotes on origination of Namdev Chhipa cast is same as Gehlotika, Bhavsar, Tak, Rangara and Bandhara Chhpa. Famous Sant Shri Krishnadasji Maharaj’s handwritten book “Shree Namdevrit” year 1894 had mentioned the cast as Chhipa, Chhipo etc on many occasions with prominence.

Example: “BHAKHOU CHHIPA BHAGAT KI | VAAT PRAKAT VISTAR || KAAI GIRDHAR KARYO | NAMDEV NISTAR || SO JAANI DEKHI SHAHAR | CHHIPO NAMO SANT || HAZAR UBHA SHRI HARI | BADHYO SUJASH VARTANT ||

Most of the saints and historians well-thought-out about similarity of different names of Chhipa (Namdev) cast and said that Chhipa, Chhimpa, Chhimba, Simpi, Shimpi, Chhipi are in use because of geographical areas. The derivation of “Chhipa” (Namdev) is well connected with King Shursen, as per Mr. Ashok R. Gehlot, Ahmedabad, an explorer on “Chhipa cast” subject and editor of Shri Namdev Chhipa Sandesh, Ahmedabad. His exertion and deep study published in various newspapers and magazines. “Chhipa” cast also mentioned in OBC list by India’s state governments. Chhipa samaj writers and educationist Shri Narayan Lal Parmar, Sheoganj, Shri Savlaram Pararia “Nama” Jalore had many times written on the Chhipa cast.

New generation adopting the different line and instead of mentioning cast as Chhipa or Namdev Chhipa, they are writing “Nama” or “Namdev”. These words are not cast but name of famous Sant Shri Namdev, born in Maharashtra (26 October 1270 – 3 July 1350). Sant Namdev as popular “Sant Shiromani” was born in “Shimpi” cast. In north India “Shimpi” cast is known as “Chhipa (Namdev)”.

Sant Namdev also known as “Nama” Chhipa and can be found in “ABHANGS” written by him.
