The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Qualifications 2020[edit]

Thank you for the updates on Athletics qualification page. Recently a very impolite User had reverted all the universality athletes (after an edit war he agreed to let only 3 in the list). The WA site in fact, as I underlined, already entered 3 athletes but not yet some athletes that are already entered elsewhere (like East Timor, Brunei, Tonga) but not yet on its Road to Tokyo site. He cancelled all after 3 back to back reverts. I will not start an edit war on that. He also moved Álvaro Martín (racewalker), replacing him by the oldest athlete competing (more than 50 years) because RFEA has planned to enter him (instead, the Road to Tokyo has already confirmed Martín). But I add the source (he did not) and give no explanation to his move. I would like to have your kind advice in that matter. Should I add the Tongan hurdler, even if he is not yet in the Road to Tokyo (many sources affirm that)? thanks again for your reply (here please!) tack så mycket. --Arorae (talk) 16:23, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Well, personally I would wait for official confirmation from World Athletics. After all, they must approve the universality athletes. Things may still happen – the national federations' applications may be denied, or one of their athletes may actually qualify through other means (even if that's unlikely in most cases). So I think if we're going to add universality athletes not included in the "Road to Tokyo" tool, we need to add a reliable source. So I actually don't think that user really did anything wrong. Thanks for your kind reply even if I do not completely agree with you. My post was more here to underline the fact that WA is not the only source available (sometimes they can mistake like in the case of the Spanish racewalker and Wikipedia should use all kind of verifiable source). I control IAAF/WA lists since 1983 (before Internet) as a European statistician, and mistakes and errors, even if they are not usual, can exist. Of course the official and complete lists will be published at the beginning of July and we can wait until then. So I will wait as usual to add Mosese Fokiali: maybe he will not even be able to reach Tokyo – no planes from Tonga because of Covid… --Arorae (talk) 08:33, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Road to Tokyo tool writes: Withdrawn (was Next best by World Rankings) 48th - 1183p

for all the athletes qualified but not retained in the lest (same as for Christophe Lemaitre and many others) and put those at the very end of the lists. I know that it is not very clear, but WA works like that, by the way this ROC has not been selected because only 10 ROC/ANA had been. yours,--Arorae (talk) 23:19, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see now that they use the label ”Withdrawn (was Next best by World Rankings)” for both those athletes who would have qualified by world ranking had they not withdrawn and those whose ranking was NOT good enough for them to qualify, but where they were one of the best ranked athletes not to qualify, which is a bit confusing.

Anyways, the ANA high jumper would not have qualified, as he was ranked 48th, and the last athlete to qualify by world ranking was Mexico’s Rivera, who is ranked 30th. AxelSjögren (talk) 23:39, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Brazil 🇧🇷 and order[edit]

Hi It is not easy to order Portuguese names in Brazil. The paternal name of Bardi dos Santos is dos Santos but because Santos is too common, it is called also with his mother's name, Bardi. Yeah, I’m not sure what the most common practice is for Brazilian Portuguese names, so feel free to change back if you think it’s incorrect. It just made more sense to me to sort by the first surname mentioned. AxelSjögren (talk) 23:29, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Iranian Athletics Records[edit]

Hi, it seems you have a big interest in this page List of Iranian records in athletics, first old records are ratified if you know where to look, apparently you don't. AAFRI is a bit lazy to update the record section in its website but still something from 5 months ago is indeed updated. again you just didn't know where to look. second, I don't think we should keep records for every single distance, something like 2000m steeplechase is not a serious event. I want to remove that record because I don't think that should be in that page. there is no senior competition in that distance. is there any rule/guideline in wikipedia about keeping records for every single distance? thanks in advance Mohsen1248 (talk) 19:31, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1. Well, if we take that long jump record, I've looked at the record page, and it says the record is 6.17. If you do have a source for the 6.26 and/or 6.40 jump being ratified, that's great – please provide it, since you apparently do know where to look!

2. Sure, 2000m steeplechase may be a fairly uncommon distance, but it's still a pretty established event, it's sometimes held at galas, World Athletics keep a world best for the distance, it's included in their stats section, and it has its own Wikipedia page. As far as I know, there's no guidelines for athletics lists at Wikipedia, but I think the consensus is that most records can be added, as long as they're not overly obscure or rare. For example, at the US records page, much more rare events are listed, such as 50 miles. Some pages have specific sections, called "Non-standard events", "Non-olympic events" or something similar, for rarer events. Feel free to create such a section if you wish, but it would perhaps be a bit strange in this case, since I guess 2000 m steeplechase would be the only record in that section. 1st, 6.40 was from today, of course it takes few days for the doping results. but 6.26 is not new and yes I do know where to look. check this , you think you checked the record page but that one was out of date.

and 2nd. this is for Iran Athletics and they never had a senior competition in that distance. (that was a junior event) AAFRI doesn't recognize the distance and these are their records. whatever they recognize should be here. if we want to add every single distance there will be lots of not conformed records. I mean who knows if that result is a NR? your source only says someone ran 2000m st. with that result. it doesn't say that's a national record. maybe someone somewhere did something better. Ah, you're right, thanks for the link. Strange, but I guess I saw an outdated version because I visited the English language site (although the record page itself wasn't in English). My apologies, I should have double-checked if the Persian language site had the same list. I'll remove the old long jump record in a minute.

Regarding the second point of discussion, I'm well aware that the AAFRI doesn't recognize 2000 m steeplechase as a record distance – that's why I added the yellow background, signalling that it's an unofficial record, not kept by the federation. That's a well established practice in athletics record lists here at Wikipedia – they're not just for records recognized by the federation. Rather than just reproducing the records lists published by the federation, we also list records in other events, and also performances that are better than the ratified records, but for whatever reason haven't been ratified.

I've just added another source for the steeplechase record, from World Athletics, showing it's the best performance by an Iranian athlete registered in their database. That's a pretty good source. I'm not denying the possibility that someone might have run faster at some smaller competition in Iran, but if someone finds a source for that, they can simply add that performance.
